That Duke or Virginia deserves a CFP slot, because are playing for one next weekend. Iowa would curb stomp either one. The ACC is a terrible, terrible football conference.
Play the Schedule & deal with the consequences of your own failures. Don’t whine about other's opportunities. That Duke or Virginia deserves a CFP slot, because are playing for one next weekend. Iowa would curb stomp either one. The ACC is a terrible, terrible football conference.
The whole structure of the CFP the NCAA will need to rethink at some point down the road. This situation you described leads to meaningless early round games that do nothing to generate overall interest. It would make far more sense to seed the top 12 or 16 teams in the final CFP poll. That Duke or Virginia deserves a CFP slot, because are playing for one next weekend. Not whining about Iowa specifically. The ACC probably shouldn't be an automatic qualifier anymore. There are probably 15-20 teams that are more deserving of a spot than these 2. Consider that Duke is a 7-5 team that lost to Virginia at home by 17, UConn, Georgia Tech at home by 9, Illinois at home by 26, and Tulane. They're a bad team.Play the Schedule & deal with the consequences of your own failures. Don’t whine about other's opportunities.
Right. That's the difference. 12 spots vs 64 and the gap in football is much larger than in basketball.Sounds a lot like the NCAA Basketball tournament. Of course, there are a lot more at-large spots in March Madness.
There are no what ifs. Iowa had their opportunities and didn't capitalize. This has nothing to do with Iowa really. Just a reflection of how the system isn't reflective of the best teams playing in the CFP.Dang, What if.............
Of course not. But this is another reason the CFP should be a 24-team affair, as the BIG has proposed. With 24 teams, the FBS would be in line with every other division of college football in terms of the percent of teams that make the playoffs, from D-III on up.That Duke or Virginia deserves a CFP slot, because are playing for one next weekend. I know the Big Ten has started to collaborate with the SEC to gain some leverage as the Power 2. Still it blows my mind the conference would propose this. 24 teams creates a six game grind with no guarantee of creating more fan interest in the early rounds. It also pretty much leaves everybody else eligible for the post season out in the cold as the bowl games wither away.Of course not. In my view it would make even more sense to pare it down to the top eight teams. That wont happen any time soon but it would make for more meaningful bowl games and enhance the CFP even at the expense of the revenue from these additional games.
Of those two options, the 16 team playoff would result in including more teams that truly deserve to be in the CFP.The new deadline for any changes to 2026 has been moved from Dec. 1 to Jan. 23, 2026.
With no decision in sight, the 10 FBS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Pete Bevacqua now have more time to see if Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti and SEC commissioner Greg Sankey can reach an agreement on the future format. If not -- and they have been at a stalemate for months -- they have both said publicly the current 12-team format can remain in place for another season.
Earlier this month, the Power 4 commissioners met in Charlotte, North Carolina, where Petitti explained the reasoning behind the Big Ten's push for a 24-team format that would include automatic qualifiers.
One possible 24 team model that has been considered:
* 4 guaranteed spots for the SEC
* 4 guaranteed spots for the B1G
* 4 guaranteed spots for the ACC
* 4 guaranteed spots for the Big 12
* 2 guaranteed spots for what will become the Group of 6 when the new-look Pac-12 begins
* 6 at-large bids for the selection committee to determine
This past spring, following the SEC's annual meetings in Destin, Florida, there was overwhelming support from the majority of FBS commissioners and Notre Dame for a 16-team playoff that would include the five highest-ranked conference champions and 11 at-large teams.

If Duke wins, I believe Miami would get a bid.The ACC champ isn’t guaranteed a spot in the CFP. The rules were written as the top 5 conference champs. They didn’t think it had to be written that the P4 champs got in because they assumed the P4 champs would always be ranked high enough to get in. If Duke wins it’s entirely possible the ACC is left out of the CFP entirely. You could have B10 champ, SEC champ, B12 champ, AAC champ (Tulane or NT), and Sun Belt champ (JMU).
At least if UVA wins they are ranked and would be 11-2 even if they aren’t a good team compared to other conferences.
They might, but not a guarantee. In that scenario JMU and Tulane/NT take 2 spots so is Miami top 10 for the committee? If Duke wins, I believe Miami would get a bid.
Duke won't get a CFP spot even if they win. If Virginia wins the CCG then yes they deserve it.That Duke or Virginia deserves a CFP slot, because are playing for one next weekend. Iowa would curb stomp either one. The ACC is a terrible, terrible football conference.
If they want to go with the 24 team model, going with 3 auto qualifiers per power 4 conference and 2 for the group of 6, and the rest being at large might be safer.Of those two options, the 16 team playoff would result in including more teams that truly deserve to be in the CFP.
4 automatic qualifiers from the ACC and Big 12 is concerning as far as the quality of teams that would make it in the 24 team option.
Virginia will get blown out by whomever they play. The ACC is hot garbage this year and FEI rates them as the 43rd best team in FBS, sandwiched between Kentucky and Arkansas.Duke won't get a CFP spot even if they win. If Virginia wins the CCG then yes they deserve it.

These mega conferences suck sometimes when it comes to putting 2 teams in the conference championship game.
In the B1G, the top 2 teams are clear.
In the ACC? What a mess.
It is what it is for now. We know some of this is just a farce. Imagine Texas doesn’t make it with their wins and one of the losses game 1 to Ohio State. It’s all a joke. Until that changes why play games like that if they will count it against you and let **** teams in.That Duke or Virginia deserves a CFP slot, because are playing for one next weekend. Just that f-ing easy isn’t it.it is what it is
if KF doesn’t play turtle ball we could easily be 10-2
Any more than a 16 team CFP is too much in my opinion. That is already an extra 4 games for the teams that make the Championship Game.
Nobody is healthy at the end of the regular season as is. Yes, some will heal up some during rest period before the CFP games start.
But, I don’t want to see the CFP Championship Game become a game determined by player attrition. I want to see the two best teams, hopefully near full strength, determine it on the field.
I did the math wrong so glad you posted this. Still plenty of things wrong with a 24 team playoff. The automatic qualifiers ensures that not the best 24 teams compete. In turn we will have even more meaningless games than we do now which does nothing to build interest. And while I don't think 6-6 teams deserve a bowl game I hate to see post season opportunities disappear for good teams that don't quite make the cut for the CFP. Bowl games will go by the wayside in this scenario and that seems a shame.24 team playoff would be four games for seeds 1-8 and five games for seeds 9-24 who make the championship game.
12 team playoff is three games for seeds 1-4 and four games for seeds 5-12 who make the championship game.
So 1 more game for seeds 1-4. Same amount of games for seeds 5-8, and one more game for seeds 9-12 than what they’d play now who make the championship game.
Definitely not a deal breaker, IMO, of stopping a 24 team playoff.

Started a reply right before bed and didn't finish my thoughts. Very well thought out post. For sure select teams based on the final CFP poll ranking. I like the smaller format and agree the bowl games have lost their relevance one way or the other. Interesting to see how things play out with the Big Ten and SEC at odds with each other. Lots at play behind the scenes it appears.I kind of like 1-24 in the CFP ranking and those are your teams. But seeded by committee. I think next Sunday could be “selection Sunday” like they do for the NCAA Tournament. The season is wrapped up by then minus ‘Army / Navy”.
Have Four Regions of 6.
West (Phoenix, LA, LV)
Midwest (Minnesota, Indy, Det)
East (Syracuse, Atlanta, Charlotte, NC)
South (Dallas, NO, FLA, Nashville)
*Some of the South and East are interchangeable.
Conference teams can’t face each other in round one.
Have rounds one and two on campus of the higher seed. Have the regional finals in a City above, which could/should rotate.
Have the Final Four in a city that’s not the regional finals city and that should rotate yearly too. You could incorporate the Rose Bowl, Citrus, Fiesta, Cotton, etc but the Midwest cities are also in the rotation too, so it’s not always in the South or West.
Just like the NCAA Tournament, you don’t have to be from the region you get seeded for, but you could take a lower seed to be closer to home.
Bowl games have already lost any significance they’ve had. Players opting out, the transfer portal is already open. Adding 12 teams (6 games / bowls) is not going to change the bowl situation as it is now, IMO. I think this would be an amazing format and best for Iowa Football. I think Iowa could/should definitely get into the playoffs and some years may even host a round one game. Kinnick in December for a playoff game??? Tell me there’s an Iowa fan that would be against that.

I’d say the best team has won the championship the last 3-4 years, would you not agree? If only CFP were based on deserving
Or 5-7 if not for turtle ball which runs clock, shortens the game, keeps opposing 0s off the field. It took a cheap call to beat Rutgers and couple of horrible non PI-calls to beat Sparty. Narrowly beating two teams with canned coaches and back-up qbs was a major break this season.it is what it is
if KF doesn’t play turtle ball we could easily be 10-2
They are not going to contract to fewer teams. Instead they are looking to include more teams.
As far as expansion goes, they are CURRENTLY looking at a 24 team format (not a 16).
The issues to the 24 team format, amongst many, come down to how many auto bids the SEC & B1G would get (at least 4 each). Until those issues are resolved, we are stuck on the current 12 team format.
IF they resolve all of the issues, expansion could happen as soon as next season.
Of those two options, the 16 team playoff would result in including more teams that truly deserve to be in the CFP.
