That would be great if true. He wasn't able to pull in a lot of talent but he could sure develop it pretty well, especially on the defensive side. I also took a couple of classes with his son at UNL, he's a good kid, seems like a good family.

While it didn’t work out for Doc as a HC at UNL, it might be a much better outcome for both this time around. Can you dig it? I knew that you could!

Why would he take a demotion? He makes $350k at Southern Miss, I can't imagine we'd pay him more than that to be a 3rd assistant here.

He's finally built Southern Miss back to a competitive program, seems odd to leave now to be an assistant at a school that fired you. Southern Miss did just hire a new AD, maybe that could be part of it.

It does seem unusual. Maybe he wants to slow down from being a HC? That seems unlikely though, right?

How good of a recruiter was Doc? I truly do not remember.

I would think having two assistants that are excellent recruiters would be optimal.

I think the world of Doc as a person. Really good guy. I just do not remember his recruiting abilities.

Doc's best defense was having the offense hold each possession until there was under 5 seconds left on the shot clock and then chucking up a shot. Laughing

That said, I'm not sure that I would be against this. Hoiberg had good success at Condiment State(@spartanhusker) with Doc on his staff. Also, I think Doc loved it here and would coach his butt off here.

Always wondered what Doc would have done with the facilities we have today... Great coach in my opinion, awesome get for Hoiberg.
I guess I don’t see it. I didn’t see it when we hired him either. He played some of the easiest schedules NU had ever played and never did much outside of Maric.

That team he had with Ade played as hard as I can remember anyine playing. The offense left a lot to be desired, but you couldn't question the effort.

I'd love to get Doc as an assistant but I have a hard time believing he'll leave a head coaching job to get paid the same or less as an assistant.

if you do get him, please make him wear a coat and tie, or at least make him tuck in his red t-shirt

New assistants, it appears, are making more than Doc makes as a HC .

Also S Miss has a new AD and will be meeting with Doc soon so might be time for a change .

The 2010-11 team sticks out to me. Lost some heartbreaking games down the stretch. Ball bounces our way a couple
More times and that was a 22 win NCAA tourney team.

Also the 08-09 team that didn't have any players taller than 6'5. If Texas A&M didn't hit a desperation 3-pointer at the buzzer to beat us, we probably make the NCAA Tournament that year.

NOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!! Horrible hire. The guy couldn't recruit a fly to land on dog poop. We need a recruiter who can coach defense NOT a defensive assistant who can't recruit. HOPEFULLY this is just a ruse to get Doc a pay raise from his AD. Yikes. Completely underwhelming potential hire.

Has there ever been a coach who was fired at a school and later returned as an assistant?

It would be cool if Doc ends up helping us to our first NCAA tournament win.

Pelini came back to be our Head Coach and he was our defensive Coordinator...

Just saying he was a Coach..

Our recruiters are Abdelmassih and Gates. Doc will sit in a room and devise defensive strategies, while Fred teaches the boys how to shoot. Lutz will be the sage veteran to provide advice as needed.
