Trouble is it would often be a turnover or running into the trees and getting it blocked. To be that size he really needs to at least be good at shooting but well he's not.Everyone said that we were the best this season in transition.

Agree. At that size you have to make up for it with good 3 point shooting and leadership like Tyler Ulis had.Trouble is it would often be a turnover or running into the trees and getting it blocked. To be that size he really needs to at least be good at shooting but well he's not.
All that to say, I'd take Wheeler and Washington (or one or the other) back in a heartbeat.Assists/TO in season under Cal:
1. Ulis - 246/69 (3.6 AST/TO) (2016)
2. Ulis - 135/38 (3.55 AST/TO) (2015)
3. Washington - 120/51 (2.35 AST/TO)
4. Wheeler - 207/91 (2.27 AST/TO)
5. An. Harrison - 139 (2.17 AST/TO) (2015)
6. Gilgeous-Alexander - 189/99 (1.91 AST/TO)
7. Fox - 165/87 (1.90 AST/TO)
8. Hagans - 191/103 (1.85 AST/TO) (2020)
9. Teague - 191/109 (1.75 AST/TO)
10. Briscoe - 152/89 (1.71 AST/TO) (2017)
11. Hagans - 160/94 (1.70 AST/TO) (2019)
12. Wall - 241/149 (1.62 AST/TO)
13. Briscoe - 107/66 (1.62 AST/TO) (2016)
14. An. Harrison - 159/109 (1.46 AST/TO) (2014)
15. Knight - 159/120 (1.33 AST/TO)
16. Bledsoe - 106/111 (0.95 AST/TO)
One noteworthy stat from this data is that every one of those who returned increased their ASST/TO ratio the following season. That is with the uptick in opportunities to commit turnovers having the ball in their hands more often than their Freshmen year. If Wheeler and Washington were to return, there is no reason to think that would not happen for them.

He had 207 assists on the year, good for third in the nation. He had 91 turnovers. That's better than a 2:1 ratio. He does play out of control at times and his long range shots were starting to fall in the last few games (while everyone else fell off the map). If Wheeler wants to come back I'd love to have a senior PG on the floor who can distribute the ball better than most in the country. He melted down at the end. And he had multiple out of control moments of bad decision this entire year. If he’s starting guard next year, it’s not good.
Duke: 10/7 (1.42 AST/TO)Wonder what it looks like in the 8 losses.
Exactly correct. And even when he didn't he beat his man off of the drive and either scored, lobbed or dished. What changed late in the year that turned him into a spaz?
Maybe planting two guys on the block. Maybe slowing down every possession. Maybe defenses sagging our shooters. Maybe all of it. Either way, he looks like a typical Cal late season guard to me.
Trouble is it would often be a turnover or running into the trees and getting it blocked. To be that size he really needs to at least be good at shooting but well he's not.
Not at the end of the season we didn't.It started to go downhill after the Kansas game and out guards fell apart. And yet, we had the 5th most efficient offense in college basketball this season.
I would have to look it up again but I think in 10 of the 12 games after that UK scored in the 70's or 60's.Not at the end of the season we didn't.It started to go downhill after the Kansas game and out guards fell apart.
TyTy can handle NBA at the PG .. just not SEC level... LOL Its laughable , we should have rolled with TW at the PG all damn yearGeez. Good luck to TyTy if he’s drafted as a PG.
I'm disappointed with people on Wheeler's case. He was a refreshing change to our team and made some great passes as a point guard. Plus in some games he was a lot of the offense.Watching UK eat up shot clock forcing the ball into the post as the rest of the team just stood around was ridiculous.
The team never played as well once Cal slowed the tempo. I'm finally of the opinion that he just doesn't understand modern basketball or he refuses to change with the times. B Knight was successful until he wasn't.
I am not the biggest Wheeler fan, but lets be real if Grady doesn't go ice cold from three than Wheeler suddenly looks a lot better and has a lot more assists.I'm disappointed with people on Wheeler's case. It certainly appears the "tweak" and a lot of coaching was Oscar has to touch the ball. So, you blame Wheeler when he is following the coach's directive and no adjustment is made when teams packed inside? In fact, Wheeler was about the only one other than Oscar who was scoring near the end of the game that built the lead against S.P.
I definitely want him back.

Because of what happened to our guards. They fell off a bridge. Our offense really suffered. On Bartovik which allows me to filter results.
UK Overall: 6th off/42nd def (which differs a tiny bit from 5/35 on Kenpom)

More often than not, Brooks or Toppin was outside, so only Oscar on the block. Extra defenders were inside because those 2 nor Wheeler were a threat from 20'. And the slowing down came from, well I don't think intentional slowing down, but rather from us not having any set plays, so it's just the guys going thru the same motion every time and the defenses recognizing that making it harder and longer as the season goes on for our guys to get open looks.Exactly correct. That’s a bit extreme Richie. Wheeler is good enough but we need one a tad better so Wheeler could be the capable backup. If he is PG1 next year we are ****ed.
Emotions were running high when I made this post. He would be a great backup PG. The question is, will he be happy in that role? That’s a bit extreme Richie. Wheeler is good enough but we need one a tad better so Wheeler could be the capable backup.

My question is what would his assist to turnover ratio be if people were hitting shots after he passed it to themEmotions were running high when I made this post. He would be a great backup PG. The question is, will he be happy in that role?
You have to factor in wheelers awful shooting as turnovers bud. He needs to move along. You can’t be 5’9” and only attribute to pass the ball. No one will defend you in the half court that’s what happened. Teams decided to sprint back and make wheeler beat them in the half court. He couldn’t and that’s the end of that experiment. Your pg needs to be able to operate in transition and in the half court. Wheeler can’t. That’s why we lost 2 games in a row to end the season. Both teams forced wheeler into the half court bam done we went home. Wheelers stats are meaningless bc he cannot shoot and ran up his Asst to turnover against crap teams. 8 times he had terrible games and all 8 we lost. Honestly it was both the defense and the guards.Actually Oscar was the only guy we could count on the whole season.Yeah but it was the defense that fell off the cliff, not the offense.
People pointed this out when it was happening too. It's just that most assumed it was because Tyty and Wheeler were missing and that once we went back to full health, we'd be fine.
Unforunately, we weren't
Not buying it. The last 1/4 of the season we had massive scoring droughts in our losses. Stats don’t always paint an accurate picture. Also those wanting wheeler back go and look at the wild shots like he took at the end of the game against peters. Wheeler chokes our offense in the half court. He can’t run it hell UGA fans came on here and said they would never take him back open your eyes.Yeah but it was the defense that fell off the cliff, not the offense.

The last 10 games our offense wasn't good.I mean there's really nothing to buy. Efficiency numbers are just points per game adjusted on a per possession basis. If we scored 1.2 points per poss, we scored 1.2 points per poss.
If someone says hey in the last 10 games or so Team A scored 85 points per game, it's hard to say that the offense was bad.
I mean yeah sure our offense was better in transition than in the half court but the same can be said for a ton of teams that like to run.
I just don't know why everyone harps on the offense when the defense was the culprit at the end.
The last 10 games our offense wasn't good.
This is the most defeatist mentality. Like I get its bad but he orchestrated a very well running offense that fell apart down the stretch. He was the one that pushed the tempo and the unfortunate reality is that style of play leads to turnovers. When it works it looks great, but when it doesn't work it looks ugly.If he is PG1 next year we are ****ed.
Just like in the game threads someone will say the refs sucks and others will say it's not the refs the team sucks. Both can be true at the same time. The defense was bad down the stretch and the offense with our guards struggled. This team really regressed in every way.The numbers would suggest otherwise
And the defense was good? lol.

Nobody is saying the defense was good. But if you couldn’t tell by watching the games that our offense sucked ***, idk what to tell you. Are you serious? The numbers??? Open your eyes man.

Yeah, ‘retarded’ is not acceptable and if you have a measurable IQ you don’t go there. And you still think it’s completely normal to call people “retarded” in 2022.
I’m not all about political correctness. But, yeah, 90’s were over a while ago.
