I didn't realize who the IA punter was and in practice before the game I commented on how his punts reminded me of John Kidd back when I was in school-- towering driving spirals. How on Earth did this guy not end up in purple?

Maybe he wanted to play for a winning program...........

Sorry, but a punter has got to be the easiest recruiting a place like NU could have. You could go to Alabama or Ohio State and punt the ball every once in a while. Or you could come to NU and punt the ball 6 or 7 times a game. I think NU just refuses to used schollies on this players which is nuts considering how important a position it is and what a weapon a great punter is.

Our snapper is on scholarship too.

Was he one of the guys that just earned one or was he given one from the start? Seems to me that we haven't had a real first rate punter who could consistently flip the field since Burton. Am I wrong?

He was a recruited player on scholarship from the moment he walked on campus.

Well, when we had John Kidd we REALLY sucked. The dude played in the NFL for 16 years. Sucking is not a reason to not have a good punter. If anything, it is a prerequisite!
Punting is a premier position now...everyone's recruiting the cream of the crop. Just ask shakes! ;)

Embrace the suck, Doc. As long as Fitzgerald is the HC, NU will embrace the suck.

Not an academic fit for NU. Bounced around college and JC. Would never have gotten by admissions.

Iowa Dillon Kidd had a neat family connection Saturday. His brother, Garrett, is a senior receiver for Northwestern. Garrett Kidd made his first catch of the season, for six yards.

Dillon Kidd had a good day punting for Iowa. His first three boots had the Wildcats starting at their 12, 9 and 13-yard lines.

Dillon started at Florida State, then went to a JC before landing at Iowa, where he beat out another scholarship punter, who is riding out his final year, though not with team.

Here is an interesting article on the brothers. They had faced each other before, while in the rosters of Mia (FL) and FSU, but neither saw significant action.

OK. But then why can't we get a better punter year after year after year after year.....
We have recruited solid punter/kickers. Miswander was a top 5 at the Chris Sailer national camp. But bad habits are formed and fitz has no idea as the special teams coach cuz he never punted a ball in his life. Osu used to havd someone who wasnt on staff work with punters. Its a shame for Miswander cuz now he is screwed for nfl. He punted better in high school.

Turk, I get what you are trying to do with your little word-play on Hunter's name. But cut the kid some slack. He is almost certainly doing what the staff coach him to do, kick short to prevent a return and play a scaredy game because the staff don't trust their players. He doesn't deserve your hectoring.

Sorry texting on phone. Didnt mean too. Besides he isnt a FG kicker and it isnt anything like Demiss or Huffmiss.

Kidd was 99th nationally in punting last year. It was another piece of "evidence" that Kirk was past his prime, handing a scholarship to a punter who was 99th in the country. Now Kidd is 17th in the country, and Kirk is smart again.

Seems similar to the fear that Fitz will take the USC job at the same time his own fanbase think he can't coach anymore.

Niswander has been battling through injury this year. He may also be the best place-kicker on the team, but they are trying to limit the strain on his leg until fully healthy.

The problem with being a punter at NU is that your leg ages prematurely from overuse. Orthopedic doctors who handle the hip replacements call it "three and out syndrome."

Do you have concrete or inside info on him not having the academics?

Just because a guy went the JC route doesn't mean squat. Or are you just being a snooty, stereotypical jerk?
