Did this team "underachieve"?

Coming out of halftime at the first Ohio State game, I thought this team was a sweet 16 team or better. Given where we ended up this team underachieved by two wins. Iowa and Wisconsin wins at home lead to a 5/6 seed and a top 25 finish. This is where Pikiell's team should be right now. The key factors in not getting there were below average 3 point shooting from RHJ and others and MJ's foul troubles. W/o those both happen.

If we go one and done in Big Ten tourney and the dance, you could make that argument. Any win in dance and no. Even getting to semis of Big Ten tournament, no matter what happens in dance, then perhaps no.

Getting to the ncaa tourney was the goal. If/when we get there then the season is a success imo.

Any wins going forward adds to the success imo.

We got spoiled coming off the 7-1 start. We weren't as good as 7-1 looked nor as bad as 5 game losing streak looked.
That is a bit of revisionist history. This team looked like a killer...until we didn't. Much of that depended on RJH, Jr and to a lesser extent JY, MM & MJ. And GB was injured. My expectations were high.

Typical. Many people take the high point of a situation and believe the situation should only improve from that high point.

Others realize that there are ups and downs.

This team performed in an expected range. 10 wins in this nasty of a conference is awesome. This team performed well and I am proud of them.

Now let’s create havoc in the B1G tourney!!!

I don't believe the team underachieved. I believe you raised the bar far too high when RU was 7-1. What did you expect when the season started? Most fans figured RU would finish with a B1G record similar to last year (11-9).

No, not in my opinion. The are going to the NCAAT as a 8-10 type seed. That is appropriate, and good progress for the program...

I’ll address this since ...last year I nailed our season to a T at 20-11 and a NCAA bid....but this year was way off in my overestimation saying we would make the major step up at 15-5

For us to have gone 15-5 from 11-9
In the big ten... there were a few things that had to happen that didn’t quite happen or really were off

1.) I really believed that experience and maturity would lead to better overall ball movement for open looks from three ...and we would shoot much better. And while I thought our looks from three did get better this year...we just didn’t hit them ...and I felt that a lot of that was mental. I am hoping that the weight of making the tourney being off...that we can loosen up and get hot. If we get hot from three...we can make a run ....

2.) we really needed someone to step up and being a leading scorer. That did happen....Ron and Jacob did score more ...got their averages up to 15 and 14...but it was so damn uneven

3.) We really need some more scoring balance from the underside of the roster....This is one that hurt The most . While we got enough from Myles and geo with what Ron and Jacob scored ... Really didn’t the 5-8 guys to chip in with enough offense ...those 5-7 points missing a game definitely had an impact on the offense ...and other than Mathis...the other three just didn’t have a few 12-14 point games to fill in at times ...not enough balance. When These four chipped in more...you will find our record was A lot better this year ....

4.) I really thought we would be a better team rebounding team ...that didn’t happen ...especially with a tall back court to help out.

5.) we never owned the last 8 minutes like an experienced team should if it wants to have a big season

Yes.... We did beat minny twice, Syracuse, Illinois and Indiana on the road in the close end games in the 6-8 minutes ...But we lost close games to Iowa at home, Wisconsin At home, Penn state on the road, blew the Ohio state game on the road (some of that was self inflicted ) , ...plus we played road games against Iowa and Michigan where we had every opportunity to come back and win and didn’t get over the hump offensively

I felt that against the better teams ...with the exception of Illinois, we never not put together a compete 8 minute finish ...That an experienced team with high aspirations needs to go if wants to have a big season

So....while I would not call this season an underachievement at all...I would point to those reasons on why we were “only” 10-10...and not 14-6/15-5

Which is a shame, because I don’t think there was a game this year that I thought we won that we weren’t the better team on the court that evening.

Conversely ...other than really bad shooting, I thought we were better that night than Wisconsin at the RAC and lost, thought we were better than Iowa at the RAC but didn’t get a stop on the last 6 possessions....

Combine of all of that ...don’t think we underachieved ...but we didn’t achieve as much as we could have ....

I guess the proper question is what is the benchmark?

the talent on the team?
Expectations?

when I look at the talent we have on this team, man for man, and compare to others in B1G I’d say we have below average talent. Finishing 10-10 by my definition is a slight overachieve

You need to take some of your own advice. You posted your opinion on a fan board and immediately got your panties in a bunch when someone disagreed with your opinion. It’s a two way street.

where is the down-vote button?
I think this to myself quite a bit on the board.

Going into this season, my expectation was that we'd be wearing the home unis at least once in the NCAA tournament. Because of where we've been, I'll take the long-awaited milestone instead of dwelling on what might have been...

This exactly. I think its normal for expectations to change, and when the team came flying out of the gates to a 7-0 start and a win over Illinois, sure maybe at that point you start to think “Hm, maybe this team can do something pretty special.”

But a 10-10 conference record and a NCAA Tournament berth is not something I would have considered a disappointment or an underachievement at the start of the season.

I don’t think we underachieved because we have a lot of inconsistent players who go on streaks and don’t always shoot well.

I do think that if fans were allowed this year we would of had a couple more wins. There were games or stretches where It didn’t look like they wanted it and a full RAC wouldn’t have let that happen.

In big picture, we made the dance and that's all that matters. So from that sense, we Met Expectations and that's the only barometer I care about. I expected a bid this year.

I get where OP is coming from and my intake:

- We "underachieved" from the sense of not improving against last year because everyone, myself included, underestimated the loss of Yeaobah. We further "underachieved" if your barometer was the 7-1 start we had - which was fools gold.

- In reality, GRF has it right in his post above that we truly did "overachieve" because out talent level is not above average compared to rest of conference. We have many warts; not too much depth; don't rebound well and yet we still ended up 10-10 in conference and in dance.

Thus I rate we "overachieved" in reality and am just ecstatic to hear our name called next sunday.

No, I believed we met our goal for this season already. Also, people consider this to be the best the B1G has been in it's entire history. So even at beginning of season if u thought we would win a couple more games, did you also think the league would be historically great?

The answers may vary based on length of someone's fandom. Fans for decades(me included) are relieved and thrilled to get us into NCAA so will in no way view as an underachieving team. But if you were an RU freshman last year and all you have for reference is 2 years, your viewpoint may be vastly different.

Yeboah was a nice player but people are overestimating his value. A year more experience from a lot of players should have offset his loss fairly comfortably. One of the major reasons this team is not as good as last year’s is because several key players did not improve as expected, and a couple actually regressed.

Good post, but I have to chide you (gently) on this: "don’t think we underachieved ...but we didn’t achieve as much as we could have ." I think the "we didn’t achieve as much as we could have" part is the definition of underachieving, lol. I predicted 8-12 last year and 12-8 this year, so they slightly underachieved for me this year and slightly overachieved last year, but I don't really care as we're in and I know if we play well, we can beat just about anyone - while we can lose to almost anyone, too. Can't wait.
