Did the refs cost

Did the refs cost us the game? Yes, I think they did. You don't have to call a lot of fouls on a team to cost them the game, you only have to call 2 on a player in the first half, especially if he is one of your best players. Fox had his second foul called on him with over 12 minutes to go in the half. To the bench he goes. Then Monk and Bam got two in the first half. To the bench they go. Your studs are out of the game, until the second half.
It is so easy for a ref to control the game, and eliminate a team's chance of winning, with just 3 or 4 fouls. Don't call them on a player who is not going to hurt the other team. Call them on the players you want out of the game. Two fouls in the first half, and a quick foul in the second half, and you have control of the game.
A ref can call blocking on the defensive player, or charging on the offensive player, just about every drive to the basket, when there is contact.
Do refs bet on games? You bet they do, that I know for sure, but more on that on another post. I would like to hear other opinions on this post.

It wasn't the calls on Fox that had the biggest effect. It was the two Bam tips, the no-call on Fox's final drive of the first half, the and-one that Hawk should have had, the walk before the and-one Maye got on Willis' called 4th foul, and finally the walk on the last shot. The only one that wasn't absolutely clear in real time was the last shot. I had to see the replay to see the hop he took.

All told, that is 14, count them 14!, points that we either should have had, or they shouldn't!

I don't know if they cost us the game but they made 3 pivotal, terrible calls in the 1st half.

The over the back on Bam.
The foul call on Willis when we'd come up with a steal down by 4.
And the no call on Fox at the buzzer. 3 guys all got no ball & at least 2 of them got him on the arm.

I'm not usually one to pay much attention to the refs, but they were terrible...especially Higgins.

it would have been nice to just let the kids play win or lose without the refs getting into it

They were bad. Really bad. If Cal shows that he is beyond disgusted with them (going into half) then you know it's probably even worse than you think. Would getting t'd up have helped out any? I would've lost my sh*t if I was him..

why respond to the thread & belabor the point?
Because we had a 5-point lead and should have won. A better question might be which call or non-call hurt us the most? But most of those may have occurred in the first half.

They certainly didn't help in the first half. Higgins singly handily took things in his own hands and accounted for many points in UNC's favor in the first half.

Ok thanks. May we all forever look to your wisdom before starting a thread on RR.

No the refs didn't cost us the game, we did ourselves in at the end with turnovers and missed shots. The way was there, shot didn't fall and we made some crucial turn overs in the last 4 minutes.

Missed Layups, Missed Free Throws and at times the game plan cost us more than the refs. Bad calls in the first half hurt us worse than refs in second half.

This^^^^^ Even Stevie Wonder could have seen how bad those 3 calls were.

The most obvious one was when Maye missed the dunk, hung on the rim and when he turned loose the rim sprung up and the ball came down and bounced in. All 3 refs had a clear view of the play since there was no one around him but none of them called the offensive interference.

Exactly. That's what people don't get. Most of these d bag refs are just looking for any excuse to bend Cal over. He HAS to keep it together or it'll be way worse.

Fox having to sit the last 12 minutes of the half was a killer, absolute killer. Couple that with the two baskets that were disallowed and the officiating had a major impact. With that said, UNC hit two incredibly difficult shots at the end of the clock when we were up 5. Just one of those days where it seemed like we were always swimming up stream.

Let's not forget the no call on the monk 3 and the walk by Maye at the end!
