Did last night effectively eliminate both teams?....

For us maybe not although we essentially played two games last night consuming 11 innings of bullpen. Smith is done, Gordon is done and James is prolly limited. Both Small and Ginn will need to go pretty deep. It we get knocked into the losers bracket I do not see us winning the tourney although we might still win a game or two.

I think LSU is toast. They have played the equivalent of three games in two days and now have to come through the losers bracket. They likely blew 4 arms for the tourney just last night with 4 guys throwing 4 innings apiece, and they gotta drag their exhausted butts back to the park in about 8 hours to play another game in the heat of a very hot afternoon.

Regarding our chances vs Vandy, playing 17 innings is like playing a DH which is nothing new. The problem is playing those 17 17ing innings until 4 in the morning. The other problem is that our next opponent did not have the same experience. The only saving grace is that at least it was played in a tolerable temperature and tomorrow night should be as well. Ethan is prolly going to have to do much of the heavy lifting.

Need to get 7 from Small tomorrow (without throwing too many pitches). If we can do that and win, we'll be in pretty good shape to win the tournament.

We fans are probably way more tired than the players. I expect our guys to bounce back again and play well, they have plenty of time to rest before tonight.

Agree that LSU is toast, and frankly if we had lost last night, I think coach’s only goal for today would be to get Small and Ginn a few innings

That said, since we got the W, I think a lot comes down to how tonight goes. If Small goes 6+ and we snag another W, we’re right back in the driver’s seat. If virtually any other scenario happens, it’s going to be tough, and it may be time to start focusing on our regional

At that age, staying up till 4am isn't really a big deal - especially when you can sleep late the next day. Definitely hurts our pitching but it honestly may be good for everyone else. In tournaments it always seems the more ABs you get & the more plays you make in the field, the more focused you become. Every one of these guys grew up playing long weekend tournaments. Win tonight and we have Friday off - then anything's possible Saturday & Sunday.

We do still have all three of our rotation guys available. If we can win with Small tonight then I think we win the tournament.

Hell naw... our guys are getting all the rest they want today. They probably won't even start rolling out of bed until 2pm.. and they won't be hungover. We might not win tonight but it won't be because they stayed up late. That's what ballplayers do.

Won't surprise me for LSU to play well and win today either. These guys grew up playing tournaments. Something like this is probably just as normal to them as playing 3 games at regular hours over a 3 day weekend.

True, it's just our traditional bullpen guys that are worn down after throwing almost 300 pitches. Limits us tonight if Small does his normal lots of strikeouts / lots of pitches routine. Smith and Gordon are certainly done for the next two games - you might could use them briefly Sunday if we make it that far.

LSU is definitely screwed.

We’ll be fine if we win today, since we would not have to play Friday. Everyone except Gordon and Smith should be available by Saturday. Just need to get through today with Small, Liebelt, and Colby White. Also, unless we get a big lead in the Friday game (if we lose to Vandy) or Saturday game (if we beat Vandy), we will also probably try to throw Plumlee in the same game as Ginn, since our 3rd game of the tourney is going to be single elimination no matter what. So that will help the bullpen a lot on Friday or Saturday if need be.

Regardless, I’m just glad that either way we are going to get a decent amount of innings for all of our weekend rotation even though we started a midweek guy in the first game. Small and Ginn getting their normal starts, with Plumlee relieving Ginn in the 3rd game (or starting the Saturday game / championship) is huge for keeping them sharp and in shape heading into the regionals.

Well I suppose. I know I wouldn't be worth a tinker's damn if I rolled out of the bed at 2 PM no matter what but then I am not 20 years old.

Totally agree with that. 18 to 22 year olds bounce back fast. If we win tonight, we get tomorrow off, then throw Ginn on Saturday.

I say with a win tonight, go after tournament championship with passion. A loss tonight, then you bow out gracefully and get ready for the important tournament.

Ben McDonald said in an Interview earlier this week that if your goal is OMAHA the ideal situation in SEC Tourney is to play four games and get home to prepare for Regional... since we played basically two games last night, I don’t know how long we pitch Small tonight since he may face Vandy down the road....

Surely not unless it is clear we are going to lose?

Do teams normally burn their third starter just to make sure they can get work when they are still in contention to win the tournament?

During the regionals in the 80's, I saw Will Clark out at a house party past 2:30am, and he hit a HR (maybe two) the next day.

LSU is strong and they are playing a rattled, unfocused Auburn team. They're winning and will likely win big.

Our players have got to be pumped after that crazy win at 3:00 a.m. this morning. You know they had fun and you can bet they are chomping at the bit to get a shot at Vandy.

Vandy looks to be the best team in the tourney so it'll be tough. But I like our chances to grind out another win tonight. I just hope we do it in 9. Hail State!

It’s not “burning your third starter” if it helps save the pen, which we obviously need after last night.

Secondly, for a team in our position, winning the tournament is of minimal importance. You don’t want the guy who you plan to be the one pitching in the regional championship taking the mound for the first time in 15 days in that game.

So in summary, it both helps us win the tourney and ensures Plum gets his work in. But Plum getting his work in is more important.
