If he improves his shot like Kawhi Leonard improved his, he can be an absolute monster. He's a teenager and has every God-given gift in the world.
If you're staring at that versus an overseas longshot or a 23 year old that was productive in college at the end of round one and you're a couple years away from competing for a playoff spot, that's a gamble worth taking.

He shot 34% from three, so he wasn’t terrible. He just didn’t shoot many (and probably for good reason).
he shot 33.8%. For freshman, that's not a bad start. He just need to grow from there.
We'll see his work ethics and confidence.
He worked harder than most on the team. Nice to see that work ethic continue. Good things will happen. Just easier to focus 100% out of college, better access to development
Diallos problem wasn't his shot, it's his handle. He needed more space because people didn't think he would drive and when he would he'd make a bad decision. He actually is a much much much better nba range shooter then pretty much everyone on the team. Shot like 39 percent from nba range
I still think that Hami's best route to a long NBA career, is as a defensive specialist, much like Liggins.
Hami will never be a great shooter, and honestly, he doesn't seem to have a great understanding of the game IMO.
I think what hurt our team the most this past year, is that a few of our most important players were good athletes, but not good "basketball players".

How great at understanding the game be for 18-19 year olds?

I always find it comical when a 15 second video is shown of a player hitting a few threes in a row and all the sudden they are drastically improved. You can easily tell who on this board actually played college basketball or not. Do it consistently in a game off the bounce with a hand in your face, and then let’s talk.
Incredible video, I just watched him make 50 in a row. Identical form in each one, never got tired.
That's especially impressive considering he didn't make a shot for five weeks during one stretch of the season.

There are kids who do though.
Most of the point guards during the Cal era had a good understanding of the game.
Are you offended that I made this observation, or do you think that all players are created equal?
A lot of great athletes, and a lot of bigs get by through HS by out jumping, out running, or just being bigger than their opponents.
I have never nor would I ever say anything personal against these kids, and this is just basketball discussion.

Did anyone else notice how he jumps forward on his shot instead of straight up and down? Wonder if that is what is causing the inconsistency.
Good decision and good to hear. I was having a hard time wrapping my head around him not attending.
There are a lot of shooting experts and coaches out there who say your feet should land slightly in front or where you left the ground.
It's due to the bio mechanics and the body working together as opposed of against itself. So as the hips unhinge and explode up forcing the torso and shoulders back/rise to allow you to leave the ground, the natural flow of the body is for the feet to come forward. Guys who elevate more on their shot usually have a more pronounced version of it.
The key is finding the sweet spot and making it consistent. If sometimes they only land 3 inches ahead of where he left the ground and other times it's a foot forward on the landing then that's inconsistencies.

Dribbling and passing were bigger problems for him here than shooting.
He was one of the worst ballhandlers for a guard we've had here in some time, dude could not dribble in traffic, had way too many unforced turnovers, and often didn't see his open teammates.
He's gonna have to seriously tighten up his ballhandling skills to make it in an NBA backcourt.

Diallo was rated by physical ability only. He can play, but his hype was way to high. Then to be mentioned on the bench all season, the buildup I believe is more our fault than his. Glad he was part of our program, only saw his true game in flashes too few of them
He went through a lot of adversity which makes me want to see him succeed even more. Good luck, Hami.
Doesn’t do anything well. Defense, dribbling, shooting, finishing in traffic, passing, rebounding, team play communication- nothing..... he is fast and can jump. Nice young guy. Don’t want another. Give me iq basketball players. Wasted UK scholarship just like Humphies and Wynyard. Get a few lesser hyped talents to stick and develop.
Hami is gonna need all the help & luck he can get at the combine. Best of luck to him and I hope he can find a way into the bottom of the first round and land on a good team. I'd rather see him take a backup role on a good team than be someone to point the blame toward on a bad team.
He stunk and you can put every spin you want on it. Yes, he was good when the competition was second rate, and yes he did improve over the season on defense and rebounding. But, his basic skills were poor and he cost us several games. Sorry to be blunt but you know it is true. He may be the first guy drafted for all I know, but he is no way ready and like several others should have taken the time to improve in multiple ways by returning.
After that caper he pulled last year by declaring having never played a game for us, I posted here that I would never be a fan of his, but I hoped he would have a great year, cuz that meant we would have a great year. He didn’t, we didn’t , my opinion of him has not changed.
Normally I agree with guys coming back who clearly aren't ready, but Diallo is probably the first exception I've had in the Cal era. I am not sure how much better he can get in terms of his fundamentals and with a lot of guards coming in who seem to be more established within their own fundamentals, Hami could have either lost significant minutes if he returned, or put Cal in an odd spot of playing him despite the fact that a better guard was riding the bench. Hami just wasn't a good fit for us. Odd to say for a guy who is so athletically gifted and what Cal can normally do with a guy like that. But Hami's lack of growth last year and the fact that we are reloading with guys more fundamentally advanced whose athletic skills are not that far of a drop off from Diallo's, I think there was a good chance that Hami, UK or even both would have suffered from him returning.

I love how people on this board think they are better evaluators of talent and basketball IQ than John Calipari.
He's received a rough time from some posters on this board but I feel he really enjoyed being at UK and I hope he puts himself in a good draft position at the combine and has a very nice career. He's still a Cat, in my eyes, and I hope he has great success.
Yeah remember when Hami won that game.. no wait that wasn’t him. Remember when he got all those assists against... no that wasn’t him... remember when Hami put that strong d on... no not him... how about that big rebounding game vs.... nope not him. Frankly I don’t remember him doing much of anything but biding his time to evacuate. Forgettable for sure
