Bob Diaco is a sharp dresser. This was after the Illinois game.

I'd be dressed up and ready to roll too if my defensive line just got finished terrorizing the Illinois offensive line all night.

Based on the defensive turnaround, this would make Diaco the reasonable choice for head coach should Riley be let go at the end of the year.

Think about how ridiculous that sounds. But that's the rationale Husker fans (including me) used after one year of Pelini.

Only if he had no head coaching experience. Since Diaco had a bad three years at UConn, he is eliminated from the discussion

Only half serious. Most people learn from their mistakes, I think Diaco will too. But he needs a little more rehab. The good thing for him, here, is that his defense is beginning to look better. If that continues, and Riley is fired, he will get a good job to further that rehab. I believe eventually Diaco could be a good head coach, if that is the direction he wants to go.

I don't disagree. But right now it would be insane to take a chance on him. Let him prove himself again somewhere else. If Riley is fired we need to hire someone with successful head coaching experience.

Not the point of my posts although I agree that Diaco would not be the guy I would go with. The point is that Nebraska fans will overlook experience, good or bad, if the guy they want has Nebraska ties. People wanted Bo in 2004 even though he was a career pro assistant with one year as a coordinator, at Nebraska. Then he goes away for 4 years, as a coordinator, and people still wanted him. Why? Tie to the program and he didn't have a bad HC experience.

Ok. Sorry I missed your point.

I agree. That is why so many, including myself, want Frost here if Riley gets fired

And my counterpoint to that is simply that a tie to the program doesn't mean the guy is the best coach. It just means its the most popular.

There are dozens of popular coaches that don't succeed. Look at Orgeron at LSU, the fans and the players all wanted him, why? He was a Louisiana boy, loved the state. Then he gets beat by Troy. Now he is persona non grata and he is throwing his OC under the bus.

Once again, I agree. Ain't no guarantee at all that Frost, or any popular hire, would be successful. I really wonder how attractive the Nebraska job would be to a highly successful and experienced head coach? There are, of course, numerous opinions out there as to just how attractive a job the Nebraska gig is. I have no idea really.

Bo is a good HC and would have been successful at Nebraska if we would have put a Recruiting Coordinator in place to take that off of Bo's plate. Bottom line. GBR

We will have to disagree, Pelini is an average FBS coach because he allowed Els to be his recruiting coordinator. He reached his potential at Nebraska, not only because of recruiting, but because of his attitude, his dislike for recruiting and his inability to relate to people that weren't on the football team. As soon as he is at a place where those things are important again, you will see hot head Bo with no emphasis on recruiting and inability to get along with his superiors unless they kiss his ***.

What I don't understand is why guys like Bob D don't understand that their talent and coaching motivations are suited for the coordinator positions. Take a guy like Callahan. Not a head coach, but a mad scientist when it comes to crafting a running scheme. Great offensive line mind. I am not throwing down for Riley 100%, but I do not understand the push from some to can him. We are a notch or so in Oline play from being somewhere with the team we have now. Can we just chill a bit and give the program a chance to settle and develop. In terms of overall wins and losses over the next three or four years, keeping Riley/letting Riley go is plus-minus three or four wins at best. Let's not throw the Diaco baby out with the Riley bathwater.

He would be best to stay home at YSU then.

I am not sure that a 3 year stint at UConn disqualifies him from ever being a good head coach or being pigeon holed as a coordinator. He was a head coach at 40 or 41. He clearly needed a little PR help, and learning from Brian Kelly probably isn't the best example. I wouldn't be shocked if he gets another opportunity to be a head coach. He has very good organizational skills, and has a plan. His issues were mostly talent and public relations.

And he may, but once that extra $175k per month from Nebraska stops coming in he will want to make more money. Craig Bohl lit up the FCS level for a few years, but when making hundreds of thousands of dollars a year it is easy to jump at and tough to say no to a couple of million dollars a year.

Agreed, the UCONN psn was a crap job. But when you hear him talk about defense, it is clear that he really geeks out on it. Would sure like to keep him around for a few years at least.

Look, my argument is more "shoulda, woulda, coulda" but I will stick to my opinion that Bo has proven to be a good HC, a crappy recruiter, and if we could have solved the latter with a big name recruiting coordinator hire Bo would still be here, sticking it to the local media. He's also perfect at Youngstown because it is so less important to recruit at such a high level. GBR

If Bill Callahan had a top flight defensive coordinator, he'd still be here, smug as ever.

So if a coach is good at 3 things but poor at 3 things that makes him a below average coach. Woulda coulda shoulda isn't allowed in the defense of Riley, why should it be allowed in a defense of Pelini. He chose not to recruit better, he chose not to hire someone to do it for him. He chose to hire some unqualified coaches that were going to be yes men and not buck the system. Those were all his doing and led to him not being successful. Just like the decisions Riley made when he took the job are the reasons why he hasn't reached the level of success he could have. That is all a part of being a good coach. The reason he isn't here sticking it to the fans and the local media is because he wasn't able to do the things needed to be a good head coach.
