Damn. Great season by the Friars. And a great effort against a big suburban powerhouse. Congrats to DGN.
I wasn’t able to catch the game but I heard one of the penalties was questionable, what was the penalty?
Third and 6 and there was a jump ball with a crowd. Fenwick intercepted the ball and returned it to inside the DGN 30. Play was called called back for PI. I couldn’t tell if it was a questionable call or not.
There was a third and long before that play Fenwick knocked the ball down but were flagged for taunting. I did see some smack talk going on.
There was no “smack talk.”
The ref said the Fenwick DB pulled the bottom of his jersey and pretended he was brandishing a weapon. Nobody at the game at the time saw this or understood this was the call, or even that this was a call that could be made.
I heard about the call after the game from someone who was on the field.
If anyone here has ever seen a “brandishing a weapon” taunting call made in Illinois high school football, I’d be interested to know. Otherwise, this was an IHSA first. Coaches should take note.

After the weapon call, Fenwick forced another third down/long and intercepted / returned to 30 as described earlier. This likely would have led to a GW FG.

I watched the TV feed. It definitely looked like there was something going on after the ball was knocked down by the Fenwick defender. I guess I assumed smack talk because it was a taunting penalty. I’ll take your word on what you heard until I hear different.
I thought the PI was questionable. Little more than smack talk. Check out 1:30 seconds of Q4….. NFHS.
Might be okay in the City of Chicago, don’t think it will fly in the burbs….

Trying to bring it up full screen for a better look but I can’t. From what I see it’s what I saw in real time. A jump ball with Fenwick intercepting and a great return.

He did the same celebration early in the game on another incomplete pass on DGN sideline.
There have been plenty of gun-related celebrations going viral in CFB that have apparently made their way down.
Unfortunate, but maybe it’ll help sway the state of HS fb away from tik-tok and instagram culture.
I don’t like any celebration because I am old school and know it. That said if it’s a celebration that insinuates brandishing a gun. It’s definitely over the top. Inexcusable. If I were the coach and he was doing that he wouldn’t be on my team. No place in sports period. JMO.

If said player was truly “brandishing a gun” not sure what there is to discuss…
I just talked to Coach Reggie Dunlop and he said someone threw a tire chain, hit him in the mouth.
The only thing that can stop a gun celebration is a good guy gun celebration. Definitely not rules.

Rough day for this officiating crew. Multiple penalties throughout the game that just should not have been called.
At the end, the DPI there was just not enough there to flag it. Direct impact on the outcome of the game. Bummer.
The “gun thing”, I saw it live. It was nothing egregious. Should have just told him to never do it again. Unless perhaps he had already received such warning earlier in the game. ???

Don't fret too much...Fenwick is used to getting jobbed by the zebras in the playoffs.
Can’t throat slash, right? Can’t shoot a gun, right? I’m guessing brandishing a gun has to follow suit. Is there a specific “no fake weapons celebrations” rule? I doubt it. But calling all of it makes sense.

Pretty weird to play the martyr and no disrespect but not many would consider DGN a big powerhouse since they have been good for about 2 years now...

Yeah if you seen my other thread you can tell I don’t like excuses. Doc may have been right and I might of assumed he was blaming the refs so it struck a nerve. Unironically does feel like Fenwick has had a lot of last minute crushing losses in the playoffs. Boylan Catholic in 12’, Wheaton North in 13’, getting royally ****** by the refs in 16’, and now this. Fenwick returned it to the 30 yard marker with less than a minute left, well within Sur’s range.
How did DGN win with Fenwick being able to recruit from any zip code and all?.....
