I loved Mike's style of play and appreciate the efforts he gave us. But how many minutes would he have gotten if he played for one of the top 8 teams in the B1G this year? That's where we want to be, right? BTW Dave, I took a grad class with you at Montclair State about 15 years ago. I hope you are still in the business and enjoying it.
I know you aren't replying to me, but you've just moved the bar from "not a B1G player" to "probably not a key player on a top 8 team in the standings this year". If your initial post had that nuance Dave would likely not have felt the need to reply as he did.

I remember clearly! Has it really been 15 years? I am still in the biz, indeed!

How many minutes would have had on a top 8 team? I think he would have played. Even kids who played 8-10 minutes on a Big Ten team compete and are Big Ten level. He wouldn't have played as many minutes on a top 8 team, but he would have played.

Mensah was a gag. Bullock was late in the cycle and was very talented in HS. Bullock was just completely out of shape. It’s funny, you knock him on Bullock and Souf, but I don’t see you giving him any credit for identifying guys like Geo and Geno. Not everyone is a hit

Without disrespecting our guys too much....Geo and Eugene aren't exactly homeruns. I worry fans are overrating them. In a perfect world they both come off the bench or Geo improves a lot.

I 100% agree with this thought. Respected it highly and the reason why I am still bullish on the coaching staff! However i can't look at what he has brought in so far and say he is the right guy. The Mensah, and to a lesser extent Bullock really makes me scratch my head and question the staff. If the class coming in isn't better than last year's new guy I will be in offical "really concerned" camp.
I’m giving Pikiell 2019 to hit all of his targets. If he doesn’t hit...

so the clarification is "contributor on a top-8 B1

I am considering the context/circumstances for Pike with his recruiting so far. He came in taking over maybe THE WORST program in all of D1. He had no time to get his first class together. If you look at the ratings from (TOS since they have # rankings for these kids) of Thiam, Bullock, and Gene, (forget Sa) their ratings are in the 200s, 400s, and Gene doesn't even get a #!!! And yet 2 of the 3 are developing into quality players

In the 2017 class, Pike misses out on a PG (Alvarado) and Duke, Myles and Geo (forget Souf) get ratings of 150, 370 and 414! Give Pike credit for getting a 4* Duke (who will need development and show he is coachable, but he has potential to be a really solid big in his upperclassman years). And give coach credit for finding 2 sneaky good recruits. One proved his rating was BS with his play this year (Geo) and the word is the other (Myles) had an awesome redshirt and is ready to step up next year.

This is what you should have expected with Pike when we got him. How did a guy like him succeed at Stony Brook? He had to develop a good eye for underrated talent, coach em up on game night, and show talent as a coach at player development. So far, we have seen ALL of that in his first 2 seasons.

So far the 2018 class has Mathis, Carter and Harper. One is rated 110, Carter is hopefully a top notch Juco and had great offers. Harper doesn't even have a rating, but all of us are excited at his potential and pedigree...because we trust in Pike's ability to develop players. If we get Caleb Mc and Bandoo, I'm very satisfied in his recruiting class. It sucks that he lost out on 2 PGs in Maclung and Strickland, and is now 1-4 with PG targets (I'll count Geo as a "hit"). But I feel good about him getting a hit in 2019 with someone, whether a PG or CG.

Pike has made great inroads with kids in the 2019 class...You can use Duke, Carter and Mathis as evidence to support the claim that Pike will deliver on some solid players in his 4th recruiting class.

I hate to use the cliche, but the "process" is looking great with him so far.

I think the recruiting item is overrated to a larger extent....kids have to be able to do more than one thing well.

I guess the larger question fans keep stating are you have to recruit better talent...obviously but with better talent comes player movement off your roster.to the next level.

I have to assume that by Year 2, Mathis is where Baker is after Year 1 as a worse case scenario and best case is he comes in and duplicates the result. I am not sure where RU doesnt improve on a player by player basis....that hasnt been the case in years past.

Of all the players on our roster Mike might have gotten the most minutes on top 5 or 6 B1G teams.

I think you are overrating Mike. He was a good player and i like him but as a smaller guard with a lot of experience his shooting percentage, assists and ball handling weren't where they needed to be. I realize he was hurt this year but it was the same last year and before he got hurt.

Also, I think your of way off on Geo. He was only a freshman and was one of our best players. If he improves from frosh to soph like most players do he is going to be a four year starter.

Our definition of talent has to change for us to make progress. Athletic ability is only a part of talent.
The game has changed with the shot clock and the 3 point shot.Rutgers plays a slow down game to minimize possessions because they lack 3 point shooters.Bottom line its very difficult to win league games scoring only 60 points a game.
