Wouldn't it be cheaper to put the planned parking garage somewhere else and put the facility on the ground?

Article says tax break. Plus if it can be spun that the revenue from the garage is paying for it...

Great PR solution. Wrap it up by throwing needed money at the RAC and you have a great solution. I bet the parking is underground.

It's great news and I think Senator Lesniak should get his name attached to this project somewhere. It was his outburst and support for the project going forward that pushed this after Julie went public and said it might be years before anything gets done.Maybe Julie is smarter than many think, and she planned this with Sen. Lesniak, hoping there would be a public outcry to get something done. I also love the fact that legislation that was introduced by the A-Hole Senator Sweeney to get money for Rowan, is now being used by Rutgers to help fund this project. He must be steamed this is working out for Rutgers,LOL.

That's not bad.
Would be a short walk from the parking deck to the gym!

As long as they don't build the typical grey cement parking deck, and stick 2 hoops on either end of the top level that is exposed to the weather, should be fine.

(That was my 1st image when I read practice facility on top of parking deck! Can you imagine coach sending out a tweet to his team: "Hey guys, no practice today. It's supposed to rain.") The other image I have is the ball going over the backboard and off the top of the parking deck down several stories. Freshman would have to go get it.

It is actually ironic that Lesniak says that. Because he initially indicated that a practice facility could be done on the cheap, and he bristled when Rutgers suggested that doing it right would cost much more than his low-ball estimate.

Call me crazy I can't see an underground lot. That would cause the costs to go up substantially. I'd be willing to bet besides the tax breaks another reason for this is to be able to pass some off the costs into whatever budget the parking deck would come from (e.g. business school) since the foundation would be down, etc. This would make the cost of the facility that much on an already tight athletic budget.

this is huge news. Love the quotes from Brown about partnerships, sounds like corporate donors will be instrumental. I like how RU became proactive after the public dialogue. Also it shuts up those including a few on this board who constantly beat the drum that RU and Julie were just sitting on their hands and giving up. Do not believe what you read.

I posted a month or so ago in a thread by Bac that I had heard from some pretty connected insiders that Julie's idea of putting a practice facility in the Athlete's glen near the football stadium had been scuttled, in part because it did not garner adequate support form donors. This new "leak" seems to confirm that things are moving back to where Pernetti had them - i.e., doing renovations and building adjacent to the RAC. However and where ever it gets done, I don't care. We just need it to get done!

This is SO MUCH BETTER than putting a basketball practice facility on Busch.
That plan was just a D U M B idea.

Thank goodness that won't come to pass.

DO IT RIGHT, or DON'T DO IT AT ALL!!!

Rocs...that would match up with Julies interview where she said if the donors don't want to take ownership alongside Rutgers in her plan the she has towork with them to find one whete they will...looks like thats the case here. I also think the chatter in the public has fast tracked the bbasketball side of facility improvements

To me, the public push that came about the last month was Julie's moment of truth. It was her time to get something done using this pressure. If this passed and nothing happened, then her abilities as an AD would have been fair game. For me, she is passing the tes with flying colors.

You have to be pleased how this is playing out. The next steps is to see a ribbon cutting date in the next couple of years. Having this for the 17-18 season seems fair. At the very least, if this doesn't help EJ, this should improve the type of candidates the next time the job opens.

does anyone have a link to the Pernetti upgrade renderings? I wonder if some of those ideas will be implemented as part of this upgrade.

We should wait to hear the price before saying that right? $30 million isn't exactly peanuts, and I'm still struggling to see how we'd get something "many times" that which is what Barchi said.

Barchi's comment was about the cost of improving the facilities for all of the Oympic sports, not just for basketball.

I know the article says "on top of" a parking garage but I suspect that language is the result of a misinterpretation (or so I hope). It probably "includes" a parking garage. I could envision a practice facility would be at the front end of the development with an attached parking garage on the back end. A 500 car parking garage would probably be 4 floors would be quite tall with facilities on top.

Based on the master plan concept pictures for Livingston that someone posted earlier, I suspect you are correct. I also cannot see RU putting in an underground parking facility because the cost of doing so is usually several times more than putting a deck above ground.

I concur that the practice facility should be adjacent to the parking garage not above it.The noise of cars screeching around the parking deck as well as having to take the same elevators to reach the practice facility makes no sense and could look like the ugly building in the Meadowlands.I understand using bonding for parking to help build the complex but there must be separate entrances and the practice facility should be on the ground floor.I hope the basketball coaches will have some input in the design .The positive news is that inertia might finally be broken. It started with the Court Club meeting and was further enhanced by comments from Stringer and Lesniak. The Athletic Director should get kudos from all Rutgers fans if she can pull off this initiative in a timely fashion.

Why do I keep thinking it's now going to cost $75/game to park at the RAC?

It will be designated as Premium RAC parking. And Lesniak's law firm will be wedged right in the middle of all contracts for the new facility and he will steer financing to his cronies in the banking industry. The guy makes me want to throw up in my mouth.

Yeah, let's attack the only person pushing for anything. His cronies can have whatever they want for all I care. Just do something.

Unless Rutgers suddenly became Texas, or one of our great fans was ready to cut a $50 mil check, the best thing that happened was getting Lesniak involved. He may be a corrupt politician, but he's our corrupt politician. These are the kind of people that get sh@t done.

Wouldn't there be a problem with exhaust fumes from the cars in the lot?
I'm not liking this idea.

From what I hear, they are hiring Sweeney to give speeches upwind from the lot on game days.

Exhaust fumes? Don't think so. They were able to build apartments on top of the new deck on Easton and somerset without that being an issue so I think they'd figure it out.

Nice. As long as a historically Corrupt NJ Politician gives indications that he may support RU Athletics under certain self serving terms and conditions then we should all jump on board with our support for long time Politician sleaze Ray Lesniak.

As as the old movie saying goes, What we have here is a failure to communicate. Some of our fans may just be our own worst enemy. Let's see how much our fans support Ray Lesniak when this project takes shape.

-----------------
Please describes these conditions. Had not seen him describe the kickback he will receive. And if this comes together and a ribbon gets cut two years fron now, I think it safe to say support will be rather strong from RU fans.

Sitting back until 2021 was an awful option. I credit Julie for capitalizing on this momentum.
