City of Jackson mandating that bars close and restaurants go take out only tonight at midnight. How much longer until governor mandates this state wide? I’d guess 2 or 3 more days.

RaiderDawg. Did you take virology under Dr. Joan McCamish? If you didn't IMO you can't claim virology. She was a bear - Only course in Microbiology dept. BS or Masters I didn't make an "A" in. She gave me a "B" and said none of us deserved an "A". At times I wish I didn't know so much microbiology, epidemiology and public health.

McCamish was long gone by the time I got to Harned. I took Karen Coats for virology when I was working on my masters. Side note, she got her doctorate working on coronavirus.

I definitely don’t claim to be a virologist. Some of my early work was with viruses, but I prefer working with living things. I learned enough to speak the language so to speak.

My job has afforded me the chance to talk science with some of the best infectious disease experts, both virologists and bacteriologists, in the country, and to work in some pretty incredible labs. Plus, my project team includes SMEs with pretty much every major human pathogen that exists. I can get a history and current research status on almost any major viral family just by talking to people I share an office with.

But on topic, I really hope this woman recovers.

Just read another update from her. She hasn’t traveled anywhere recently. She caught it in Desoto. So as suspected it was hear sooner and more widespread than the numbers are saying.

Raiderdawg, we are lucky to have someone of your experience here to educate dummies like me about this. (I'm being serious.). Could you give me a quick idea what the difference between a regular, run of the mill virus is and what makes something a "corona"virus? I'd look it up, but figure you could put it into layman's terms for me.

Each new virus family gets named for some characteristic, either something about the virus, where it was found or who discovered it.

Coronavirus means crown. Whoever first saw these viruses must have been reminded of crown by the proteins on the surface of the virus.

Run of the mill viruses all have official names, they just don’t get used in everyday talk.
