Derek Diamond and the Gemstones. They were a one hit Do-Wop group during the 60s. You probably saw them on that PBS fundraiser "Dancing to the Do-Wop" during last year's fundraising drive. I think their hit was "Raindrops keep leaking through my roof". Had a good beat and you could dance to it.

Funny thing, Clapton said he wrote Layla as an homage to George Harrison’s wife, Patti Boyd, on whom Clapton had a huge crush. Later, after Boyd divorced Harrison she actually married Clapton. She is the inspiration for “Wonderful Tonight” and “Bell Bottom Blues” as well.

Unfortunately writing three hit songs about your crush will only carry you so far as Boyd divorced Clapton a few years later.
