We beat UGa by five once that year. Just shows how different conference games are. Everyone that is any decent has your number. And will play you hard.
That SEC championship game ticks me off. It was the day before our Youth Sunday and we had the radio playing in the sanctuary as we practiced. Was not a fun afternoon. We were one a 27 game winning streak and just choked that game away. That hot shooting team couldn’t find the Gulf that afternoon. All I can remember Cawood saying was UK taking another shot and off the front of the iron. It was like Tuesday’s game in a way. Just couldn’t make a basket.

I wanted to go 40-0 in 2015 but always question had we lost in the SEC tournament would we have won the NC? I think so.

Umass was no P5 team. That’s right off the top of my head. It wasn’t as disimilar as you think.
Mercer started 13 games and play nearly 20 minutes a game on a team where no one played more than 27. I wouldn’t call that barely getting off the bench. he scored 20 in 24 minutes in the national title game. DA started 24 games.
I definitely agree it was the better team. no need to exaggerate details to validate their greatness.

Nah. We just couldn’t find the ocean. Shot 33 percent from the field. Miss St shot like 50%. That sends you home. So unless guys like Delk and Walker were purposefully missing shots, we just gonad a clunker. Like every great team does.
Delk was 5/19 that game. Walker was 4/13. Yikes.
Cheated to win a title. If Cal’s FF at UMass and Memphis don’t count (when he was cleared) Pitino’s title at UofL (where he KNEW) definitely doesn’t.
96 was an exceptional team, maybe the best ever. Loved that team and Anderson was one of my favorite players ever.
UMass. But that game was vacated. It’s why technically only Rick is the only coach to take theee schools to a FF. Even though minus the vacated games, Cal did it too.

Yeah but there was more to that game than we shot poorly. IIRC, Pitino had some questionable coaching moves that were head scratchers.

Both Anderson and Mercer averaged under half a game. Yeah I guess I got carried away with the barely played. Everybody played under Pitino.

People are on here downplaying the talent/experience that Calipari had on the 96 UMass team. Marcus Camby was basically Anthony Davis in college. The National player of the year. Donta Bright was really good. Padilla/Travieso was a great veteran guard combo.

Mississippi State played out of their minds as well. they hit some ridiculous stuff. it was just their day. Pitino inexplicably benched antoine walker as well. And said after the game (paraphrasing) “i wanted them to see how much they needed each other”. So yeah im pretty sure at a certain point he decided to throw it so they’d go into the tourney pissed
Cal first fans are the most sensitive group of people next to the transgenders. A former UK great makes an innocuous comment that applies to most of college basketball and they take it as a slight towards Cal.

How long do we have to go on pretending the offense we run isn't the problem? "Cal haters" would instantly be cut to a minimum if we ran an competent offense but some of you have to go on pretending that it isn't even an issue. Can't even acknowledge the problem.

Surprisingly, there were many different starting fives that year that I didn’t totally remember. Hell, Turner and Pope started some games that season as well. Didn’t remember that until I watched some highlights.

Ain’t gonna happen. Cal’s never shown any interest in bringing a former UK player aboard his staff (well, except for Brad, who I don’t really count). And, if he ever does, it will be one that played for him, not Pitino.
ahh i see. yeah i just looked on sports reference. my only point was just i don’t know if they’d stomp the 2015 team. clearly better but that 2015 team was a bear to deal with because of their unheard of size for a college team. i think it’s the tallest college team in history on average height and average height of the starting lineup.
it wasn’t just the post players either. 2 6’5 starting guards is tough for other teams to handle and the twins were very solid defensively as sophomores and we had the dpoy.
i think it would be close because of the size and the fact that Cal spent most of his career deep in pitino’s head. Cal has just always had an answer for pitino’s pressure defenses.
Again though, the 96 team did a lot of other things well too. They had elite players at every position and one of the best benches of all time. i think in the end guys like devin booker and trey lyles would have been in over their heads in that game.

I think our disagreement is on how much difference players staying in school made. I think teams like the 96 team would have never ever had a shot clock violation against Wisconsin late. They would have been up by 15 to 20 points so it wouldn't have mattered. The team the 15 team lost to besides having John Higgins was an older team.
