They do that a lot; maybe the top 2 jockeys in the country. The only legit reason to have bet the winner was the jockey.

One interesting thing I noticed: the 3rd place horse was only 22/1 but it seems like he should have been 99/1. He was a $12k yearling purchase who was still a maiden in 6 races with only one second in a cheap maiden race and just won a half million dollars with a 3rd place finish.
Yep. Crazy.

It’s just so hard to handicapp the Derby. Horses have never ran this distance, they’ve never been in fields this size. FurtherAdo was in great shape, and then got crunched, and he just seemed to quit when that happened.

My horse threw his jockey down and stomped him and got scratched. What a disaster lol

I thought Renegade got a rough trip. Pushed in towards rail near start all the way from #4 horse. Dropped back as a result. Then at top of stretch, kinda got squeezed. So he did well to finish where he did imo.

He did. But before the race Pletcher said the plan was to hopefully get away good and then drop back and maneuver up and hope holes opened up.

After the race Jose said they had the same plan and he just tracked behind Renegade then had enough to pass him coming into the stretch.

Further Ado got boxed in and had no holes to hit.

The Derby is so hard to handicap.

3 year olds that have never run that distance, never been on a track with 19 other horses or in front of 150,000 people.

And they are all good horse that had to qualify to be there.

Just how tough it is to win, it’s the first Derby win for either of the Ortiz brothers.

Arguably the best two jockeys in the world.

Certainly both are top 5.

The key point being 150K.

Always like reading the derby thread after the race to see who actually called the winner.

good job.
I have a friend that bets $2 across on every entry.

So he can tell everyone that he picks the winner every year.

And he does. He’s the mayor of a small town in Western Ky.

He called me yesterday after the race and said “I won again!!”🤪

Most years he loses money. He does get 5 checks by doing that. A full field costs $120. He usually wins $80-85.

But when Rich Strike won he made out well. And yesterday he made money.

But he only cares about saying he had the winner.

I had the winner too. I bet $10 across on the winner. Not because of some kind of keen insight. He’s a son of Curlin. I always will bet a Curlin son. Journalism last year.

I thought Renegade or Further Ado would be the winner. And bet the most on those two.

I bet both of them across too. So I made money on Renegade.

We were there. It’s just an exciting weekend. Friday was fun too.

A good friend of ours and business partner had a horse in race 2 yesterday.

We would have been in the winner’s circle if he had won. He got 3rd.

Another good friend of ours is a trainer. He had a horse in race 5. Again, we could have gone to the winner’s circle had he won.

Thought he was a winner. Got nipped at the wire and was second by inches.

That’s racing.

I dabble in racing. I’ve partnered on several horses over the years. I don’t have ownership of any right now.

I will probably get back in at some point.

I remember an article in the 90s about a guy who did that and had a display of all the winning tickets going back 30 years. Wonder what Churchill would think if you wanted to cash a 20 year old win ticket.

This guy cashes his tickets. He doesn’t hold on to them.

I don’t know if they expire.

I have a framed $2 win ticket for the Derby, Preakness and Belmont for the last 2 triple crown winners. American Pharoah and Justify.

I didn’t personally place those bets. I bought it. I paid far more for it than the tickets are worth.

He got a Beyer speed rating of only 95, which is well behind par, so it was more a case of the front runners stopping instead of him going really fast. I havn't seen the final pace speed ratings yet but his raw final quarter mile time was about 24.8 which isn't really fast. By comparison the great mare Zenyata ran the last quarter mile of the 2009 Breeders Cup Classic in 23.0(#4 in video) and ran a final quarter of 22.49 in another stakes race.

Impressive to have the patience to sit so far back and not get caught up in traffic down the stretch.
