Listening to the radio and some of the comments on running back is it sounds like Grant is going to start, but Yant is coming on and will get carries. Also been said that Ajay Allen is the real deal and is probably going to be our guy by October / November time frame. Who really knows, but it is a good problem to have at the RB position.
Grant is a RB who has shown he is a guy who can handle a lot of carries, but I don't think Applewhite is gonna be that type of RB coach. Grant is a real good cutback runner, as long as there is a crease he should do well, but dancing and not finding a crease will likely move Applewhite to making a change. Grant looks to have real good speed, but definitely not a burner.
If NU has made a decision to actually run the ball, who better to have a physical presence than Yant? If he has a good knowledge of the playbook and they are able to move the DL, Yant can be really tough.
I like both Rahmir and Ervin, solid all-around guys, but I doubt either will be the man before long.
I have been really high on Allen since I first watched his film. Overall, he looks like the most natural RB in the entire group. Since he's a true freshman, and NU has a room full of good backs, it may be awhile before Allen gets his shot. I put Allen as a half a notch below a Reggie Bush type kid. If he is considered to be a redshirt candidate, I hope he sticks around because he's gonna be a helluva player.
If Allen is not going to be in the 3-deep, and they aren't redshirting him, I think a natural position for him would be that same WIDE back position while backing up Rahmir.
Regardless of how the RB room shakes out over the course of the season, it is very apparent Whip highly prioritizes taking care of the football and not beating ourselves. Which ever RB can take over early, be productive, and take care of the ball will get a lot of snaps. Let's hope NU has 1 or 2 of those type RB's.
These comments are nothing more than my opinions, and since my main interest is in the team winning games, I care less about who carries how many times, I'm happy to cheer on any of the ball carriers regardless of their individual running styles.
One of my primary focal points early is to see if NU is 2nd short, are they good enough to throw the ball in that position with the confidence they can still pick up the first down on 3rd and short? It's been a long time since NU has been able to do that, and it's a helluva weapon for an offense playcaller.
