Who do y’all think will be our top two at CB and top two at S ?

Who will be the starters at OLB?

starting 3 up front on D-line?

extra credit: make it a 2 deep

*these are spots that seem pretty wide open

What about Antonio Reed? He has received praise from Travis Fisher.

Yep, that’s why it sucks to go first. I also didn’t base it on Sept 1, rather on season end.

This could be close to a reality- also interesting there’s a lot of ‘talent’ left off that 2 deep. The position battles in the secondary and OLB are gonna be good.

Pretty good guess on all positions. Made a couple minor adjustments, but pretty much right on for the top 22 on both sides of the ball from information at this point in time.

Might be a couple surprises, but we should slowly figure out any changes over the nect week or two as word slips out here and there.

At ILB, it sounds like 3 will play the most snaps in Young, Barry, and Honas.

At DL, any guess could be right at this point almost for the top 6 ot 7 players there.

Position battles will be very good at those spots because there are no standouts. I love competition, but it is what it is. Sorry to be the Debbie downer.

If Gifford comes back healthy then I think he has one top spot. Dewitt loves Ferguson, and Fisher just said Reed may be the best safety which is promising.
Deontai Williams needs some work but Fish describing him as a bullet is exactly what we need.
Cam Taylor could be working his way towards a #1 spot which would be wild.

I'd be very surprised if Cam Taylor starts at corner for the 1st game. He's never played the position in an actual game, even in high school.

I think he could eventually be a great one, but if he starts game one over guys who have played the position at this level before, that would be surprising. And possibly concerning.

How could it be concerning when we know what Bootle can do? My view is that could only be good news.

I think Martinez will start, Conrad is not going to be the center, agree with you on Reed
Conrad has taken all 1st string center snaps while Farmer was always at guard for all media availability and for others who have been able to sit through practices.

I think the QB battle is still up in the air. I think that Gebbia has the quicker instincts that the coaches are looking for, however, which is why I think he will start. Both will play though.

I think Reed is the better player of the two, but I think Neal starts at the beginning of the year just based on experience and being able to help the defense (dbs) get into the correct spots/calls. By conference I agree it would be Reed.

I tend to agree with you on Neal. I think Reed is better, but experience could play a factor. I'm still not sold on Conrad. He may be taking the snaps, but just think the staff is going to try to put us in the best position to be decent up front. Conrad is not decent. Center is our biggest question mark IMO just because the guy who should start struggles, and there is no depth at all or a guy who hasn't played the position. In my perfect world I would move Farmer to center and play Raridon or Wilson.

I think Conrad is better than we are giving him credit for. He hasn’t had an actual position, as he was basically Cav’s backup for the entire line. He also was playing hurt since I believe the Oregon game last year with a very bad shoulder and was still basically one of the 5 best lineman, which shows how underdeveloped the line was under previous staff. I do agree I would love for W. Farniok or Raridon to step up and take over the center position (or even H. Miller) so that we could get a true center in there for more than a single season.

I'm not trying to bag on the kid. I'm sure he's a great guy. But if you go look at tape from last year, you'll notice that Conrad had A LOT to do with our offensive line problems. He was either missing slides, picking up the wrong guys, routinely getting buried in a one-on-one matchup or making mistakes on a double team that allowed guys to split it, bumping off his OL helping on the double team, or getting confused about where his help is coming from and this allowing a defender through the line clean. If he is our starter, he will be a liability again this year unless he has taken enormous steps forward.

And I’m not trying to defend the kid. I could care less the names of the starters. I just want the best to play, which is what sounds like will happen. But if all reports point to him taking all first string snaps at center and if you believe our coaches when they say they will play the 5 best guys, then Conrad is either way better than people give him credit or all the others are sh*t.

I should also say that our line blocking schemes this year will be much different and should benefit the lineman.

Fair enough. I was not sure what you were saying, thank you for clarifying.

Again, maybe he has improved substantially over last year. Watching tape from last year, he was by far the biggest liability on the OL. If hes the best option, then so be it.

Agreed, the scheme should help, based on what we're hearing from coaches.

Maybe above all else we need a vastly improved OLine. The center position is sooooo critical and was so marginal last year. "Somehow" it simply has to make a big jump.
I am slow on the uptake today. Been a long day.

I'm holding out hope based on what I hear from people around the program. As a whole, I don't think the OL is void of talent. In fact, we've recruited fairly well, all things considered. We both probably saw the same thing while watching last year - standing around, nobody finishing plays, nobody playing with pride, anger, bad intentions. I'm looking forward to seeing how this unit is playing by the time conference play comes around. I'm hopeful. But yes, prayers are always good too. :)

Yep, it's been rough sledding for us for a good while. I fully believe SF & staff will straighten the ship. But how long will that take? I'm sadly totally clueless.

We'll hope for the best!

I'm super excited about our LBs. What will the newcomers Dixon and Honas look like vs the big boys? What kind of improvement will we see from Young and Barry? Of all the linebackers, Mo probably intrigues me the most. I'm not as high on Gifford as some but he should be a decent contributor.

He’s still there and working away. He’s not gotten much public mention which could mean he’s still behind guys like Alex Davis, but I’m hopeful he’s gonna start to emerge soon.

Well based on the Spring game he has a long ways to go. He seems lost in coverage, is too small to be a run stopper, and for what should be his strength pass rushing I didn't see a whole lot from him.
