Will the great defenses ever return? I'm mostly thinking about NFL, but it applies to NCAA as well.
Or have the rules slanted everything towards high flying offenses?

It's looking like what we are doing here now, as it is showing up more and more in the NFL

conceptually the NFL can match up with more offenses on Defense than most college programs, but with the rule changes and the variety of ways offenses attack, it's a really difficult thing.

Defensive coordinators are impressive in adapting over time, but the rule changes are all geared toward blowing up the scores

You saw Michigan State's D didn't you? They are very very good. They put a great deal of effort in to recruiting the best guys they could get and put them on D. They have very good speed across the board on that D and some big physical guys who can run. Good scheme. Good talent. Good D is still out there it's just that the rules and the offensive revolution has really exposed the mediocre ones with weaknesses. The RPO rule changes has made it really tough on teams with average athleticism.....(like us).

Need to start calling illegal man downfield on rpo pass plays. I saw one in the last week where the offense completed a slant pass for 8 yds or so. Right as the WR caught the ball, an OL was blocking his guy almost into the WR. No call.

Defenses are at a disadvantage like never before

Can't hit the QB without risking a personal foul

Can't do anything more than play Patty cake with the receivers without out risking defensive holding/interference

Dbacks can no longer blow up a receiver to dislodge the ball with out risking unnecessary roughness or targeting

But yet running backs can drop there crown of the helmet and smash into anywhere and anyone they want.

There are three rules that could offset some of the disadvantage that other rule changes have placed on the defense.
1. Once the offense is set- no resetting
2. No man-in-motion allowed.
3. Eliminate anything close to being a pick play. Making a defender lose his man by running routes explicitly designed for a receiver to get in his way or by running his teammate in his way is done routinely. If a receiver can't beat his man one-on-one, tough.

Definitely agree with #3.
