Chin is going to have to make a believer of me that one of his defenses can actually be good! I just hope to see some improvement. I do not expect it to be outstanding for sure!

Old Hawkeye walk-on OL will likely out perform old Hawkeye LB Bob Diaco.

2019 will be interesting season in B1G West.

I think we're all in kind of "wait and see mode"with Chins. We had better players on offense than the defense this year imo, so I'll be patient. I'm definitely tired of the firing of coaches.

I think getting the d line better is the biggest key. IF we can get the run stopped so our dbs can concentrate mainly on pass d first and run support second, they might be able to play better. They need confidence. We were giving up too many run plays into the second and third level.

Way too many 3rd and longs given up. Everyone just needs to get more comfortable in their positions and ability

Isn't that the case with any Scott Frost team?

Not necessarily true with every past Nebraska coach, but I would be shocked to see it be opposite under Frost.

This was a key improvement for Minnesota in PJ Fleck's so-called Year 1 in 2018.

I agree. Is Wisconsin the favorite? Hell if I know. Its gonna be very competitive.

It may be Iowa, but unclear.

DC Leonard has plenty of retooling after losses on his side after 2017 and 2018.

Don't like QB situation at UW. Iowa is a reach, but they did win at UW, Northwestern, Purdue and Nebraska all in 2015.

But, that was with NFL QB CJ Beathard, not QB Nate Stanley.

I think it is Northwestern over UW. Fitzgerald has won there in Madison. Others too!

He is a young head coach. Chins is a young D coordinator. Too small a sample size for Chins. I know at least our offense will be good.

We've had good teams since Dr Tom retired, but they were lopsided. We didn't have complete teams, and that was because of ego or friendships. I hope we're past that.

I'm interested in seeing what Dixon brings to the table this year. Domann played well, too. I think D. Williams at safety could be a playmakers for us, he has the athleticism. We already know Barry is a hell of a LB.

I think we have some, but I thought we had some last year also.

I don’t know what the ceiling is for our D in 2019, but personally I think we lost no one who is irreplaceable (maybe Gifford?-meh).
We have a good amount of new talent that will have a much better understanding of the schemes and their assignments, PLUS another year of S&C. Combine that with how awful our D was last year statistically, and I think it’s a clear recipe for big time improvement.
If there is NO improvement then I think Chin’s seat will get hot fast.
Top 50 defense would be good as mentioned in OP, but I’d love to see a bigger jump into top 30. “Desire to excel”.

I think so. Hopefully we can find a pass rush and help our secondary out. Second year in the system and the grad transfer (Daniels) should help a bunch.

I think Daniels may turn out to be an important player next season.

A second year of powerlifting and doing Olympic lifts will be a big factor. And this more than anything, makes me think our run defense will be drastically improved.

We are incredibly slow up front. We don’t have explosive guys off the edge either. We should be improved. We need players to step up. We have recruited decent. But not enough to field a dominant defense. However we should be average with a chance to be decent. That’s about the best you can hope for.

? - I know Wisky is getting a very nice QB from Blue Valley North, KC area, who won today's game and looked like the best QB in San Antonio (including smiling Mike's i'd bet).

I think the Davis twins have a good first couple steps. So I would say they are quick. I think our linebackers have been slow.

I gave chin a mulligan just because of the dumpster fire the coaches inherited, and remember the defense showed up against Michigan state, I know some of you will say state had a lousy offense, but there still a d1 school. IMO I think he'll do just fine in the big 10, I could be way off base all he'll end up being another cosgrove or babbling bob

The Davis twins are ok. The problem is they are so inconsistent it’s rather frustrating at times. My issue isn’t really with them but rather or edge rushers. No explosiveness at all. With the 3-4 you need that edge rushing LB to get pressure on the QB.

I don't want to be a Debbie-downer on the D but no one can say it was good this year by any metric you want to use.

A crushing D is a thing of beauty to watch. Someone has to show me who and what is going to substantially improve for this D next year. Substantial would be the key word. Where is the pass rush going to come from? Even Kentucky had an incredible edge rusher. Our linemen can't get off blocks and besides Barry, who will be our studs at LB? Honas coming off the knee injury, doubtful.

Seems the pat answer is another year of S & C, and better understanding of the D strategy. Exactly where will the improvement come from?

I agree with you. If the strength gains in s&c doesn't allow us to improve, It will be bad again. I like our defensive class this year tho.

This might be a dumb observation, or one so obvious that I shouldn't bother sharing it, but I think because of the style of defense we run, we need to recruit better in terms of stars and ratings on that side of the ball than we do on offense.

It seems like Wisconsin, MSU, Northwestern and Iowa can field really solid defenses made up of tough, heady players with a few NFL guys sprinkled in. Their scheme and coaching allows this. I could be really wrong about this, so feel free to tell me if I'm way off base here, but our scheme seems to require a lot of elite athletes to complete at the highest level. If I understand our basic strategy correctly, we take a lot of big risks with the idea that if they pay off a few times a game, we'll have enough possessions for our offense to win the game. It seems to me that if you're going up against the Buckeyes, or the Sooners, or Clemson or Alabama, you have to have some amazing players for these risks to pay off. While on offense, if we have playmakers at a couple of positions and a solid O-line we can scheme our way into a lot of points, though obviously the more talent the better there as well.

I don't think top 50 defense is asking too much. If he can't get there next year, don't know if Chinander will ever field a good defense.

Freedom when healthy wasn't great and Mick was always playing at way less than 100%. I'm hoping for an improvement for their minutes from other guys this fall.

I don't think we will see 50's. I believe we were 94th in total D this year. Maybe if we can get into the 70s? I could be wrong but I don't think Frost main focus is going to be a top 20 D. I am guessing our D under Chin will be in that 60-80 range.
