The general take is that Carlos and Khalil have underperformed. But they now will experience their fourth coach going into their fifth year in the program: Hank --> Parella --> Dawson --> Tuioti. Would have to say this history has been at the very least suboptimal and more likely problematic in terms of defensive line performance.

Its a great point. On the flipside, I think the Secondary will be among the most improved units on the team. This will be the first time Lamar and Bootle are coached by the same dude for two consecutive seasons.

I don't think they have so much underperformed but I think we (most of us fans) put crazy expectations on them. They fit the things fans love

When/ if we get more consistent LB play across the board, I think you will see offenses adjust their blocking schemes to account for the LBs. When that happens, you will see Davis, Davis, Stille, Daniels, Daniels and Thomas matched up 1 on 1 more often, which will result in more tackles and potentially more TFL/ Sacks.

It's an excellent point on the changes that the defensive line has had to go through. I would also contend that the real mulligan was having Diaco's weird defensive schemes come in; even Riley said that was probably the worst thing he ever had to do (and he insinuated that his hand was forced on firing Banker). This 3-4 is much more of an attacking one, which is probably more their strong suit.

I am looking for the D-line to be much improved this year. we have 4 big bodies (Davis and Daniels brothers), all of whom are big enough to play Nose Tackle and are much more of the correct body type. Then, add in Stille as a pass rush/speedier option at DE for specific packages (and maybe DaiShon Neal doing something similar as well), and Thomas should be basically big enough to sub in any of the line roles as well, and we should absolutely have the big bodies up front to get the job done.

I agree too that if the LB's get their act together, that is when you'll see the D overall really take a step forward. The secondary SHOULD be somewhat better this year, so really the LB's is what I am looking at for improvements.

You're leaving out the coaching they received via text messages from Kaz after the firing. It was an assumed fact on this board for a while.The Davis twins said it was nonsense, but people here are smarter than that.

Don't know how much weight they would have put into Kaz's text coaching, because Kaz never coached them. Also, Riley and staff were already coaching the spring ball session when Carlos and Khalil were still throwing shot and discus for Blue Springs High.
Oddly, Hank Hughes was probably a pretty good DLine coach and had very productive years against the run when he was at UCONN (when UCONN was still decent and playing in the Big East). I don't think the guy was big on recruiting and wasn't a fit for Lincoln. Parella was a rookie coach the next year, then the year of Diaco weirdness (a FUBAR event that stands out in the years of uneven coaching), then Dawson, now Tony.
This will be the second year in the same scheme, that will help a bunch. NU has a lot of experience. Elder Daniels has 30+ games of experience, as does Carlos Davis. Khalil and Stille have played quite a bit as well, and the younger Daniels and Deontre Thomas show a lot of promise. Would be great to see the Dline be a bright spot for the team.

That's what I'm saying. The scheme isn't changing, and the D line is 2 deep and then some, seriously. I would imagine this means they're going to be at least decent.

Great point about LB play. At the point of attack, it’s a 3 vs 5 deal. And in that respect, the DLineman held up their end of the bargain most of the time last year.They had a fair number of series where they got the better of second down and it was 3rd with distance and the other units couldn’t close the deal. Still short at ILB, unless young guys like Heinrich and Hannah are legit. Have to hope Mo, Honas and Miller step up and are able to cover a lot of reps. OLB is still in renovation.
DBs should be better and we win more 3rd downs, especially if the opposing QB feels a little more urgency.
