Interesting. He didn't seem to be progressing up the depth chart, but he's still pretty young. Good athlete. Maybe not a great fit at TE? I don't think he had the best hands. I wish him luck and success whatever his choice.

I was hoping for David. He is a big, strong looking guy.

I'm ok with any of these guys who wasn't gonna play a factor moving on. Wish the kid well but I appreciate the open space.

With guys like Stoll, Rafdal, Allen I think we have enough guys to get the job done. Not to mention I have a feeling that a guy like LeGrone or McGriff could be a huge factor in that HB/TE hybrid role in the future.

There is also the kid Snyder who wouldn't suprise or disappoint me if he decided to move on either. Jmo but that's how u turn a roster over in a couple years.

Engelhaupt seemed like a good prospect. I liked the idea of having a tight end who had played some running back. I hope he comes back. Even if he's the #4 tight end this year, he could still see a lot of playing time.

Yeah we have like 3 guys already who seem to be good (Stoll, Rafdal especially, and Allen), we're getting Legrone and Cam Jurgens (who is amazing but I wouldn't be shocked to see him switch to OLB or something since he's such a beast). I think we'll be fine at the position, and this opens up scholarship space for deserving walk-ons or a grad transfer.

Turn. That. Roster. Over.

My God is it nice to see a staff come in and pre-empt 20 years of, "Yeah well if he didn't have the other coach's players and we gave him 4 years after his first 4 years so he could coach 4 years with his guys..."

Sign big classes, get JUCO guys, get grad transfer guys, cut dead weight.

Been calling for this for years and finally it's being done. We've had a starting 22 talent level on Saturdays comparable to Purdue, Northwestern, Indiana, Minnesota, and the results have matched.

I come over on this board to get away from fake news. Did anyone take the time to read the story or just the tweet? Laughing

Beckton qutoes:

-"He stepped away from football just a little bit over the summer. He's expecting to rejoin the team real soon. I don't know exactly his situation right now," Beckton said. "We'll figure out what's going on with that."

-Beckton did not have any more information about Engelhaupt’s status but lauded his progress before that.
"David obviously came along in the spring," Beckton said. "A tough-nose minded kid."

-"Jack Stoll, obviously, came out of the spring as the No. 1 guy," Beckton said. "I met with him yesterday, trying to get him to be more of a leader with the tight ends. Kurt Rafdal, the 6-6 kid from Indianapolis, really surprised me, and Austin Allen has really come on. He's done some good things for us this spring. Right now, coming out of the spring, those are my top three guys until we find out with Engelhaupt."

Doesn't sound like attrition to me. Sounds like he's going thru some personal things. Actually sounds like he could be in the top 3.

And he did crack the two deep last game going into Iowa. He was listed 2nd string in a two TE set. Not bad for a rFR.

Anything going on with David is due to personal reasons and not because the coaches don't want him or see him as deadweight. He fits specifically the mold this staff is about. Snyder, I am not so sure about

I mean, if Beckton wasn't high on him and thought he was dead weight probably wouldn't be so smart to have him be the one you send to Norfolk. "Hello, I am coach Beckton. The one who told the local kid to hit the bricks. How you all doing?" The fact that Beckton went to Norfolk was probably a sign he wants David back

We've actually had better talent, but that talent was not trained to perform at the required level. Some kids are responding well to the change, others are not and a number of those either have or are now exploring their options. In terms of recruiting, NU has only been consistently out-recruited by tOSU and MU, then recently by PSU. NU has consistently landed the best recruits in the West. We should be competing with Wisconsin for the division instead of that game being already inked in as a loss.
Anyone who has spent some time in collegiate athletics knows that coaching competency varies. Riley was just what he was, a .500 coach, with all the expectations of one. The kids in the NU program are now experiencing coaches who expect a higher level of performance and those expectations are 24/7. Conditioning, weight room, eating right/get your body right, high movement practices. I believe their level of confidence will grow substantially over the season.
The players needed to compete for the West title are already on the team. And the number of those type of players will only grow over the next couple of years.
