Not really…just a bunch schools that can’t keep a roster for crap and are dumpster diving in portal is what I see…including Uk potentially…which is sad to see what Cal has done. Is this kind of recruiting really a ton better then Gillspie bunch of no name scrubs like Euton, KC Ross miller, Vinny Zollow, Michael Avery, etc?
Why not drop down to some really good top 50 kids there aren’t NBA yet, sale them on a program like UK, get them some good NIL deals and build them up over 3-4 years and the NBA will be there if you’re good enough?
Yes. Recruiting player of the years in mid major conferences is just like gillispie recruiting players that never did anything in college basketball. Get a grip.
Dumpster diving — that’s exactly what this is starting to feel like.

Calipari is a lazy ***. He doesn’t want to scout and find a real team, he wants to throw darts at a top 25 list, then just offer portal players. This is the same guy that once said 5th year transfers isn’t “the right thing to do” because ya know, all moral superiors like John Calipari…ya know what, never mind.

Calipari isn’t lazy? That’s news to me. The way he runs this program doesn’t seem like a guy out there on a mission that’s for sure.

Player assessment is far from an exact science. It would be easy to come up with a list of very good NBA players who were not 5* players, not even 4* players. Hell, even a list of UK players who are doing quite well in the NBA or were very good at UK that were not 5* players. And likewise it would be very easy to produce a list of 5* players who never made it to the NBA, or really never even were good college players. And there are also a decent number of NBA players who played at mid-majors.
So yes, I trust some guy who has proven himself at a mid-major more than some 18yr old kid that "evaluators" think will be a good player in 5 years. Despite his struggles the final few weeks, I would put Grady's entire season up against almost any FR guard last year (I'm guessing you may only find 4-5 that were better).
This kid is 3rd team AAC...hardly a basketball powerhouse league
He shot 40%FG and 38%3pt...averaged 13 pts, 2.5 rebounds (that is pitiful to be honest), 47 assists and 34 TO. and 21 steals. Hardly a stat sheet stuffer across the board.
His past looks like a run of the mill lower tier school that Cal has on his non conference cupcake list that we beat ad nauseum. He is nothing special and he's a Jr.
Again I will state....this level of recruiting is dumpster diving at it's best. Is a terrible idea...especially when you've got a program like UK to sale. Maybe Duke will kick our butts for top 10 kids....and you can skip on the deranged top 30 kids that still want to get to the NBA in 1 year. So move to the top 50 kids and sale them on a career at UK and build a freaking competent roster with multi year kids and coach them up (something Cal has done very well in his past at UMass and Memphis). This is just stupid to do things this way when you have alternatives at a program like UK.
If you read the thread you'd see we actually didn't reach out for this guy. Our main targets have been power 5 players and POY in the conference. Far better than any 4 star top 50 kid would be most likely

If we are trying to make sense of it, it is probably because Wheeler isn't going anywhere and Cal doesn't want another smaller guard.
