Having a big game for Kentucky against Toledo. So far with a little over 9 minutes left in the 4th quarter - 12 carries for 128 yards and a long touchdown run.

Nebraska wanted him to stay. They didn't want to pay him as much as Kentucky. Nothing can be done now. It may reflect our evaluation but only more time and sample could answer that.

DD was a huge loss. I get you can't keep everyone all the time, and he's on his third school in 3 years so he was prolly always going to leave at some point, but he was a huge loss. We don't have 2 RB better than him. Maybe 1...

I somewhat agree. But short term memory people were very down on DD last year. And he had critical turnovers. Now he has over 100 against Toledo. All of a sudden Opinions have changed about him.

One key word there=TOLEDO
The guy was no where near avg here, He belongs somewhere where he can play teams like Toledo to pad his stats.

Have there been any recent updates on Ives' injury? Not suggesting he's a world-beater at RB, but late last season he looked like he could be a pretty decent backup.

Mkai Gbayor was pretty sweet for Belichick's defense if I really drink about it. So yeah, wish we would kept all them guys.

I am a Dowdell fan. I liked his running style, lots of power, runs downhill and enough wiggle.
The reoccurring negatives on DD last year was his fumbles which I tried to find and didn’t come up with and second, people always thought there was a hole available and he missed it. He had over 600 yards which of us, unfortunately, is pretty good as a part time player.

I am concerned that EJ won’t survive the season as the bell cow and he doesn’t have the power we need inside the 5. If you needed a crucial yard or two, who would you rather have carrying the ball, EJ or DD?

now ponder what things would be like if EJ would have followed through with the portal.

We weren't keeping DD. I think UK took Shorts leaving personal after putting a huge buyout in his contract. Stoops likely paid a premium to stick it to us. Such is life.

I really like how Stoops was shocked we didn't hesitate to buy out Shorts. SEC people are delusional. We're Nebraska b*tch. You're Kentucky.

Dowdell is good for short-yardage situations where he just runs straight behind the blocking for a couple yards. His vision is extremely suspect. He's more of an Imani Cross-type back. He might even be encroaching on a Dan Alexander-type back but he's not as much of a freak as DA was.

Would have loved to have him back this year but money talks.

Short term memory. You don’t remember how the board was with DD. I like him but he was hammered in the former board.

Maybe i am misremembering and maybe i'm not following what yer saying either..i just don't remember him ever fumbling, at all, and some posters make it sound like he coughed up the ball a lot... and I know he averaged over 4 yards a carry.. and he was a TD machine when we got close.

Google shows a fumble inside the 5 against UTEP. Another against Indiana. Both lost. He may have had another 1 or 2 we recovered, IIRC.

DD was not worth the money we paid him. The problem is we replaced him with nobody.

My biggest gripe is that he is not a good rb that made a lot of money at NU.

We forced DD touchdowns to feed his ego all while sh@tting on our best RB Johnson.

We went from having a trash OC and good DC to a trash DC and good OC.

I've said it once and ill say it again. Rhule will end up like Bill Callahan unless he puts winning over personal relationships.

The amount of crap Rhule and staff took when Dowdell transferred from Oregon because he only played in 6 games as a true freshman. People wrote that there was another freshman at Oregon who had better stats and Dowdell just wasn't living up to the 4 star rating he had in high school. That this is a waste of a scholarship. Now, probably the same posters that are now complaining that Nebraska should have done more to keep him.

Edit - outside for the 79 yard TD run with 9 minutes to go in the game, Dowdell had 13 carries for 50 yards. Technically McGowen is the starter and had more carries than Dowdell

Rhule has no real personal relationship with Holgersen nor Butler. I don't understand this narrative. To the best of my knowledge Rhule had never worked with either one, he only knew of them from other coaches and from coaching against them. That is like saying Rhule and Frost have a personal relationship because they have both coached at Nebraska and both coached in the American Athletic Conference.

He got sat pre season as he was fumbling in practice regularly-Fumbled early in game 1 and got sat down again.

He was no where near the runner Alexander or Cross was-DD was never an avg BIG back and he was destined to be replaced-Mighta been a second option but justaguy that you couldn't count on with his fumbles

It took Rhule 1.75 years to figure out Satterfield was a joke. Did you forget about that? Somehow EJ Barthel also still has a job for doing absolutely nothing going into year 3.

You wrote - "I've said it once and ill say it again. Rhule will end up like Bill Callahan unless he puts winning over personal relationships."

Satterfield was replaced, Holgersen and Rhule both admit that they tried to hire Holgersen after the first season. Another fact is that Satterfield wasn't the first choice for Rhule as OC, he was turned down by Peetz who stayed with the Rams. He fired one of his best evaluators and long time assistant for sleeping with female staff members. His first DC didn't have a strong personal relationship with Rhule either. The LB coach is doing a heck of a job and he does have a personal relationship with Rhule, wierd how that doesn't get brought up. He had no personal relationships with the OL coach, the new DB coach and the new DL coach. So basically you have a problem with a a lame duck TE coach and a RB coach, and you want to compare that to Callahan? I get the Satterfield hate, he didn't do a good job as OC and QB coach, I can see the issue with Barthel. But the vast majority of the coaching staff that he had a personal relationship with are gone.

You are probably one of the guys pissed off that Nebraska isn't signing a bunch of instate players. People who ***** about Rhule recruiting nationally and then complain that he isn't putting winning first are being a bit hypocritical.

And I am really pissed off that Holgersen brought Shorts over from Kentucky considering he coached him and even let him stay at Casa Holgersen for a bit. Stupid personal relationships and all.

I'd take Dane Key any day over Dowdell. Dowdell was a power back with little elusiveness and a weird desire to try to jump at the goal line which never worked (instead of powering through on his legs). Stats against Toledo don't mean a whole lot compared to how he does in his conference schedule. EJ emerged as the better RB and I feel we needed more speed to complement the one area that EJ doesn't fill - breakaway speed.
