Dan Wetzel's take on NIL is that this helps create parity

I think Wetzel is being extremely naive here. He thinks Houdstooth Consulting is only going to be paying the starting QB. That may be true, but Roll Tide Used Cars is going to be paying the 4th string Bama QB more than Bronco Buster Rods & Reels is going to be paying the Boise St. starter.

So what you’re saying is that Alabama is going to finish in the top 10? Like they have almost 40 times since Bear Bryant showed up there.

I struggle to see how something that allows open payment of athletes will help smaller, poorer programs. I do think athletes should be able to profit though, so I’m withholding judgment.

This kind of theory depends on the smaller school being able to convince the player that they won't, or at least might not, be the starter at the bigger school. Most of these kids have been told all of their life how amazing they are and completely believe that they will be the star and all of the other 4*s and 5*s will be backing them up. Playing time would probably win just as many recruits away from the Alabama's as small endorsements if you could actually convince the kids that might be riding the bench.

You have to exert some genuine mental gymnastics to figure out how this is a good thing for parity.

From what I understand the NIL rules allow autograph signings. There are Gumps willing to spend their last dime to get the autograph of the 3rd string Tide QB.

This in no way helps MSU. But it won't hurt us as much as some think either.
Bring on NCAA 2021!

He does make a point to mention schools where football isn't the most popular sport. I can see this being an advantage for us in baseball. A popular player like Mangum could get endorsements here that he might not get elsewhere.
