I guess I'm wondering why any of this can possibly matter now. Just seems like a counterproductive distraction. Although I am very disappointed and tired of Calipari's stubbornness and other counterproductive idiosyncrasies, he will definitely be at UK this season and next, at the very least, unless he develops a serious health problem, enters the priesthood, or becomes an agent. His contract situation with UK is such that removing him from the job, if it comes to that, will require almost a consensus of UK's Board of Governors to negotiate and finalize. Internet posters don't have skin in the game, and can say anything out of frustration. But executive management does not work like that. Although Calipari talks and coaches like a distracted man, he still recruits like an elite hall of famer. That means executive opinions about his value will take some time to settle. With DJ Wagner, Aaron Bradshaw, and Justin Edwards in the pipeline, it is likely that some (not all) members of the Board still view Calipari as an asset. Due to the polarizing numbers involved in a decision to actually buy Calipari out, building that kind of a consensus on the Board will require Calipari to underperform again this coming March and then screw up next year's star studded team too. That would probably do it, but we are talking about a 2-3 year political and financial process.
So while I think Calipari is burned out and has probably shot his wad (so to speak) at UK, he is still in the driver's license seat because of that contract. Unless he decides he wants to leave, getting him out will be a more difficult than most of us would think. He can be bought out, but that will require a whole lot of money and some real determination from the Board.
Let's be clear. Anyone can see Mitch is tired of Calipari's act. You could see that in the blowback after Calipari made the "basketball school" statement. But Mitch will need to line up the entire Board Committee on Athletics and all of the influential Board members if he wants Calipari out. Then, if Calipari takes another coaching job and does well at his next stop, that could be a career killer for everyone involved in forcing him out.
You can forget about Hurley ever making any candidate list at UK. Hurley is a Duke man to his core. That will never fly with our Board. Nate Oats is an outstanding coach. But the politics of hiring a coach from inside the conference is different now than it was when CM Newton hired Tubby away from GA more than 2 decades ago. GA was able to hire Mike White because FL was ready to fire him. But pulling Oats away from AL would take more than just a truckload of money. It would be complicated, and would piss off AL bigtime. But by the time UK's next basketball coaching search happens, there will be a brand new list of likely candidates anyway.
