Dak turned down $175M over 5 years?

The market after next year will be at $40M plus. Hell, Houston is about to play $40M to a QB no better than Dak.

That's pretty arguable. Watson's career (3 years) passer rating is 101.0, and dak's career (4 years) passer rating is 97.0. Watson hasn't faced near the pressure dak has either.

That's the real point here. It doesn't matter if Dak is a top 5 or top 10 QB.

Every year some talented young QB resets the market, often multiple times in a year. The price goes up, not down.

In 2017, Derek Carr broke the record.

In 2018 alone, Jimmy Garoppolo, Kirk Cousins, Matt Ryan, and Aaron Rodgers set records as the highest paid QB in history.

Stafford, Wenz, Wilson... as long as you're arguably a top half QB in this league and don't have a weird Tom Brady arrangement, a new contract means a new record.

It's pretty clear Jerry's plan is to make Dak look like the bad guy if he doesn't take a bad 5-year contract. Lots of slanted, misleading information and outright lies being leaked from the Cowboys camp for months on this.

He's in a dream situation. I don't understand why he hasn't signed. We can argue whether the money is "fair", but I certainly think it is. He's a life long Cowboys fan. Jerry will give you 2nd and 3rd chances. They got tons of talent. Any potential extra money he could earn elsewhere can easily be made up just by playing for "America's Team**". At this point, I think Jerry is actually putting his best foot forward.

Dak better not give Dalton a chance. He's chomping at the bit to see Dak stumble. I bet the Joneses would be ecstatic if Dalton stepped in and was just mediocre. They'd throw 4y/100M at him in a heartbeat and let Dak walk after the tag.

That’s the one piece that I wonder about when I keep hearing about Dak and his agent balking at these extensions. Even if Dak’s contract in years 4 and 5 end up being $10M/yr less than the top QBs, I’d have to think that his endorsement deals would not only close the gap, but push him well past all but maybe a couple of them.

I get why Dak’s held out up to this point, but I guess my point is that $35M in Dallas could easily be worth a whole lot more than $40-45M elsewhere.

What would everyone's guess be as to how much more in off-the-field opportunities being the Cowboy's QB is worth than the "average " NFL franchise. In my mind I've got it to be a big number.

I don’t know why this is so hard for some(mostly media) to grasp, but you’re exactly right. NFL QB is a position like no other, and this isn’t like the NBA where when it’s a contract year, you look at last year’s stat sheet and negotiate accordingly.

The position can make or break a franchise for more than a decade, and GMs have proven over and over again that when you have a top 10 caliber player, you pay the man. Doesn’t matter what player X earned last year or whether player Y has more pro bowls than your guy. What matters is your next best option, and if you don’t have one, you better pay because someone else will.

Good. If Jerry and the fans are both pissed at Dak, he may actually get a chance to move on to a franchise with a competent front office that actually allows him to maybe get a ring. He will never, ever win one in Dallas as long as Jerry is still alive.

He's no better and Houston lost their top WR. Watson lost his security blanket and a guy that was arguably a top 3-5 WR.

Most people could not name every starting QB in the NFL but everyone knows who Dak is. I am not a Cowboy fan but the prime position in the NFL is being the starting QB for the Dallas Cowboys. Everyone always know who the starting QB is for the Dallas Cowboys. Randomly ask people who is the starting QB for the Las Vegas Raiders then ask who the starting QB for the Dallas Cowboy. Compare how many get those correct.

Off-the-field opportunities only exist if you are at the top of your game compared to others in your arena, and also very marketable (both of which are true of Dak). That holds true regardless of what city you are in. Quincy Carter and Jon Kitna certainly weren’t wearing out the TV commercial circuit when they were “Murica’s team” starting QB. Likewise, Tom Brady is probably not going to be any less marketable in the small-market no man’s land of Tampa Bay.

Yeah, google hasn’t been super helpful when trying to find endorsement data, but based on what I have found, it stands to reason that Dak’s opportunity would be somewhere in the $8-20M/yr range as long as he stays in Dallas. Win a super bowl, and he’d quite possibly be setting records

Didn't the Patriots almost always work a team friendly deal with Brady? That's what I really hate about this thing with Dak. He may end up being the highest paid QB - and good for him. But that seems to be a handicap for most teams. That's why you typically see two types of teams in the playoffs. Teams with the top 5 QBs, and teams with QBs on rookie salaries.

Teams that end up overpaying an average QB get stuck being an average team. I think Dallas missed out on a big opportunity these first 4 years. If he ever wants to win a Super Bowl he'll have to develop into the best in the league, or he needs to settle for not being the highest paid player in the league and let Dallas build a team that can compete.

Yeah, I’m sure everyone knows who Dak is only because he plays for the Cowboys. Has nothing to so with him having one of the best career-starting 4-year stretches of QB performance in NFL history.

People recognize Cam Newton more than Dak probably 5 to 1, and Cam has taken a team to a Super Bowl and won a league MVP. Yet Dak has way more endorsement clout because Cam isn’t as marketable due to off-the-field stuff, and the fact that he isn’t as good. Zeke Elliot, same deal. More name recognition, bigger star all the way back to college days, plays for same team as Dak, but again not as marketable due to off-field assclownery. The notion that Dak owes all or even most of his marketing income to the team he plays for is flat out ridiculous.

Another false narrative in more ways than one. There are countless examples of non-Top 5, non-rookie salary QB’s going to or winning SB’s. Peyton in his last year in Denver before retirement. Dilfer. Eli in 2011. Donovan McNabb. Plus, there’s no evidence at all that Dak won’t be a Top 5 QB. Compare his Year 4 to the Year 4 of Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees and get back with me.

But finally, you lose any and all ability to make that argument when you give a 7 year extension and top salary to a RB (with two 17ing years left on his deal) who is already shown signs of wear and tear, or when you give Top 5 money and a long term deal to a WR who isn’t even Top 10 at his position. You absolutely cannot make those moves, then turn around and tell the most important asset in the whole franchise over potentially the next decade that he has to “take less so you can build around him”. That is the height of hypocrisy.

If you knew your employer would pay you 20% more of the next 4 years of you held out for 3 months, would you? Absolutely. There is no downside to Dak saying no to this deal. If they are offering it now, it’s still gonna be there before he sets foot on the field again.

I wouldn't say there are countless examples. What kind of salary was Dilfer making? I'm guessing not much. McNabb is a good example though. He signed a big contract early on and made the playoffs and a super bowl the next few years until he had some injuries. Not saying it never works out. Just saying most of the playoff teams have top QBs or low paid QBs.

Peyton took a paycut in 2015 - and Denver won a Super Bowl.

Look at Seattle with Wilson. Super Bowl two years in a row. Signs big contract. They're a wild card team that hasn't been back to the NFC Championship. Gets another big contract.

The Chargers have some great years when Rivers takes over as starter. Big contract in 2009. They are mediocre for the next decade.

I don't care if Dallas wins or not. I'm not a Cowboy fan. I agree they probably screwed themselves with the Elliott contract. But I would like to see Dak win, and win big. I just think if he signs a monster contract with Dallas that will make it hard for them to have any success beyond the next 1-2 years. I'm not going to criticize him for signing a record contract if he can. He's earned it.

There are plenty more examples. Tom Brady in 2018 is another example. He was 4th in the league at $27 million per year, but not anywhere close to Top 5 in production (8th in QBR, 11th in ypg). Jimmy Garropolo last year. Made an absurd amount of money for similar production to Brady in 2018. Almost won the Super Bowl.

You also continue to trumpet this “Top 5 QB” thing. Are those Top 5 QB’s not making a **** ton of money? Therefore, is it not just as hard to build around a Top 5 QB? And, why can’t Dak be a Top 5 QB for the majority of his prime years? He’s already delivered 2 Pro Bowl appearances in his first 4 years in spite of a flat out disastrous group of receivers and TE’s for the overwhelming majority of that time.

A four year contract is never going to sink any franchise. That’s all Dak wants. And you are essentially talking about whether he should take, say, $32 million instead of $34-$35 million. That’s not gonna be what sinks them. Read about how little Jerry has spent in free agency the past couple of years. He has the money. He either won’t spend it, or he blew too much of it on Zeke / Amari. Either way, that’s not a Dak problem, that’s a Jerry problem. Especially after he got 4 years of Top 10 QB production practically for free.

I really don't know what the problem is

BUT, if this is strait up accurate.

SIGN the 17"n Deal.

How much $ do you really need?

If you are the highest paid,

the expectations are much higher.

Not saying that Watson is better but to say that he’s performed well because of a clean pocket is just not true. His first year wasn’t too bad 19 sacks in 7 games but 2018 Watson was sacked a league leading 62 times and last year 44 times. Dak has it rough in 2018 as well getting sacked 56 times but that’s the only time his line failed in a big way.

I literally said “top 5” once in two posts. Trumpeting?

Maybe I should have said elite instead - however you want to put it. Point is when a team signs a QB to one of the highest contracts in the league, that QB has to perform as one of the top QBs over the life of that contract - he has to carry that team. He’s the highest paid, most important player on that team. Most of the time (obviously not all the time) if he is just average, that team’s going to miss the playoffs. On the other hand, a lot of teams make the playoffs with a good, young, low paid QB because they are surrounded by a great team, great defense, whatever. When that QB suddenly signs a monster contract the talent level of the rest of the team drops over the next couple of years. That QB has to carry the team or you don’t have a chance to make a run in the playoffs.

The whole point of my original comment was that Brady has at times had a team friendly contract. He hasn’t always milked them for every penny he was worth. I’d love to see Dak take a similar approach over his career. But you’ve got a good point - Dallas is not New England. Anything they save on Dak would likely get wasted elsewhere.

Where did I say Dak won’t be an elite / “top 5” QB?

There is if you're taking $35MM in year 5 when you could have gotten maybe $50MM in year 5. If that 5th year isn't such a big deal, why don't the Cowboys just offer $140MM over 4 years?

And what if he gets an Alex Smith type injury playing on a franchise tag next year? Or a Joe Theisman break? $100+ million guaranteed sure beats $35M. I may not have made a 25 on the English section of the ACT but I do have an accounting degree. You’re quibbling over money his great grandkids will never be able to spend all of if they live to be 100.

Pretty scathing excerpt from this article on dak contract talks...

"... In his first year, Prescott threw for 13 touchdowns and 4 interceptions against above-.500 teams and compiled a 6-3 record, including the playoffs. Since then, his touchdown-to-interception ratio is 25-25 and his record as a starter is 6-17. Last year, he had an 8/8 TD/INT ratio and the Cowboys went 1-6 against teams with an above-.500 record...."

https://www.bing.com/amp/s/www.theb...escott-stats-good-teams-contract-01e8w476239v

ETA... dak was outstanding vs below .500 teams...

"... Against teams with a .500 record or below, Prescott shines. His TD/INT ratio is 64/9 and his record is 29-5. Those are elite stats for sure, but they come against below-average competition. Of course, that's what good quarterbacks do: beat up on bad competition. But putting Prescott in that elite category doesn't fit based on his career performances against better teams thus far...."
