Smart move on his part IMO. If they were to call the season off between now and 7/15 he's guaranteed $31+ million. If he hadn't signed and the season got canceled he wouldn't get anything. Plus he still has 3 weeks to negotiate a better deal.

If he plays on the franchise tag and throws for 4,800 yards and wins 10-11 games he can name his price.

If Dak can't get what he wants this year he may want to franchise tag next year as well. By the end of the 2021 season Mahomes will have reset the QB market. It would make Jerry wish he had agreed to Dak's 4 year deal.

If he plays under the franchise tag - does that mean Dak wants a 3 year deal after this season?

It has to be scary going into your tagged year with Mike McCarthy holding the clipboard.

Smart move by Jerry. When Mahomes and Lamar Jackson sign their extensions next summer, I’m sure the price will go down...

Hopefully I don’t need the sarcasterisks there, but I’m gonna go ahead and call this the beginning of the end for Dak in Dallas. Tags are not viewed favorably by players or agents, and as soon as Jerry tries to pull this again next Summer, things are going to get testy

I think Jerry gives in before the 15th.

Hope you’re right although I’m not optimistic. I doo know that if Dak does end up signing for nearly $40/yr, the eventual Mahomes and LJ extensions are just gonna be nuts

Dak has Jerruh by the balls. Even if payroll goes down, it will not impact Dak's franchise tag because it's based existing number and not based on the cap.

Exclusive franchise tag: A one-year tender offer to a player for an amount no less than the average of the top five salaries at the player's position for the current year, or 120 percent of his previous salary, whichever is greater. The player cannot negotiate with another team.

The kicker is that the 2nd year is something like 144%. Dak would be on schedule to make something like $54M if he got Cousin'ed.

I think Dak would sign 4 years / $36 million right now. Jerry seems to be dead set against anything less than 5-6 years though. Jerry may be taking the approach of “I’ll give you 4 years after 2 franchise tags if you don’t like my 6 year offer”, which could easily bite him in the ***.

I think Dak's priority is # of years and amount of guaranteed $. Pretty sure he wants more than 4 years.

Maybe. His agent could take the approach of pursuing a 4 year deal max, with each tag year reducing that number by 1. So he could say if he gets tagged twice, he won’t sign any extension longer than 2 years. Not sure if that’s what they are thinking, but its just one negotiating tactic to get a deal done sooner rather than later.

No, it’s well documented that he DOESN’T want any more than 4 years due to the continual resetting of the QB market values every year. Long term deals cost QB’s big money. 4-year extension has become the standard for the position. Wentz, Goff, and Wilson all recently did 4-year deals for this reason.

If Dak got that much I dare say there would be some idiotic Cowboys fans jumping from the roof of AT&T stadium.

If I'm not mistaken, he doesn't want longer than a 4 year deal because a new CBA will be in place at the end of a 4 year deal.

The new CBA will be in place starting this season, and therefore will be set before a deal of any length. Another thing affecting it is the new TV deals which will greatly increase revenues and player salaries across the board (but especially QB’s). All of these will be in place after the 2022 season. So, Dak could achieve the same thing by signing a 3-year deal and make sure he’s timed correctly to cash in after both. But I still think 4 years makes the most sense for both sides based on the precedent set by the last 3 major QB contracts. 3 years is a little more player-friendly, where 5 years or more is tilted to being more owner / organization friendly. 4 years is the best compromise.

Add to that, the reality that Drew Brees is not likely to play beyond this year, opening a very interesting opportunity for Dak to go to New Orleans, his home state.

It's official, Dak signed his franchise tag today for $31.4M today. They have until July 15 to work out the long term deal.
