Dak not a Top 5 QB?

That wasn't a 4-year deal offered, it was "5 or more." And that's the sticking point. The Cowboys are trying to lock him down for a long time at a price that's pretty good today, but will be below average in the latter half of the contract.

I've got (not in this order) Brees, Brady, Rodgers, Wilson, Mahomes, Jackson, and probably Watson ahead of him right now, so he is closer to 8th than I was thinking. Not sure about Roethlisberger after the elbow surgery. Theres a case to be made for guys like Ryan, Garrapalo, Wentz (when healthy), Stafford and maybe Rivers but so much of that last group depends on their surroundings. Dak should be paid like a top 10 QB and he should turn down anything less, but I could see him turning down a bigger haul for more guaranteed and less years.

There's basically no point in comparing him to Brees, Brady, and maybe not even to Rodgers. Brees and Brady could suffer a very sharp drop off at any time. Rodgers is 36, which is pretty old for a professional athlete and there's not guarantee he will have another four-five productive years like Brees and Brady have.

So basically he's top five in his "generation" of QBs. He'll end up being better than some of them, but there will also probably be a young, special QB or two that come in and pass him quickly, so he's probably going to be in that top 5ish range for the length of his next contract.

People confuse the top five QB with getting paid. Wentz and Goff are probably top 5 paid right now. It is all about pushing the salary up for the QBs behind you. Mahomes is about to push the ceiling up. Dak will be below whatever Mahomes gets. Most of the "top" QBs are close to retirement therefore have already gotten their families set for life. Dak has made $6 Mil total as a NFL QB.

Jerry went out and paid a top 3 salary to: Zeke, Cooper, Zk Martin, Lawrence, and probably Tyron Smith. None of those guys are the most important person on the field, that is always the QB.

This negotiation is all about Jerry trying to get Dak locked up for 5-6 years at the cheaper rate. Dak only wants a 4 year deal because he knows after 2-3 years that he will probably be the 10-15 highest paid QB.

This isn’t as far fetched as some might think.

If we don’t have fans in stadiums and the economy suffers more, lower salaries is a real possibility.

NFL gets roughly 75% of their revenue from TV. I would say that ticket sales is probably around 15-20% tops as revenue. As long as they have games then the NFL will get their billions.

It’s not wrong to think he could have a bad year (and also be his worst year), and that hurt him for his future earnings.

I’m sure he’s weighed the risks rewards and it’s America! He gets to choose.

I’m just saying what I’d do. I’d take a WHOLE LOT OF GUARANTEED money and not worry abt getting the absolute most I can.

The franchise tag is 100% guaranteed as soon as he signs it. That is $31-32 Mil just for next year. No reason to sign a 5-6 year deal and only get $60-70 guaranteed. Dak has bet on himself every step of the way. I trust he is listening to the right people.

Remember, the only information we are getting is pretty much what Jerry is leaking. The only thing Dak has said is there is more to a contract than money.

Agreed, and some of the comments here have alluded to this, but QB is the one position in the NFL where you don’t have to be a Top 5 player to get Top 5 money. The key for a franchise is all about their next best option, and if Jerry wants to give the next 3-4 years a go with Andy Dalton or whoever the heck else they have on their depth chart, well... good luck

Personally, if I’m Dak, I’d have already signed a deal to lock up $100+ mil in guaranteed money. That said, I’m not and Dak is clearly confident in betting on himself, so more power to him. Also, while nobody knows what’s truly being said behind closed doors, I still get the feeling that Jerry is not fully sold on Dak being the guy, so Dak’s basically shoving the ball in his court and saying get with me when you’ve made up your damn mind. He’s only going to have more leverage next year when a second consecutive franchise tag would cost Dallas somewhere around $40M

And Jerry has attempted to leak literally everything EXCEPT the length of the deal, which tells you all you need to know about where they aren’t seeing eye to eye on the negotiations.

”Dak turned down Top 5 money on a per year basis”

”Dak wants $40 million”

”Dak turned down more guaranteed money than Goff / Wentz”

None of that is relevant information without knowing the length of the deal.

Dak also outplayed Goff and Wentz while making $6 Mil and they made around $28 Mil. They also both signed "4 year" deals that puts both making around $32 Mil per year with close to $100 Mil guaranteed. I don't think Dak is turning down that contract even though he has outperformed both of those guys.

Jerry wants to give him that deal with 5-6 years control but if he wanted that then he should have given him that deal after year 3. Rumors were he was trying to give Dak around $25-26 Mil at that time which is considerably less. Dak played on his last year while making $3 Mil and had one of the best seasons in the NFL which was also the best season any Cowboys QB has ever had.

Brady already has. Last year was his worst since 2006. And yeah, part of that was his receivers, but a lot of it was him. I think that's why the Patriots let him go.

I agree, but let's see what he does with that cast in Tampa. They probably have the best set of skill position players on paper in the NFL. Godwin and Evans are stout and they go three deep at TE, plus Jones out of the backfield has the skills to be used like James White.

He actually made just $2.7 million in 4 years.

Here’s a great article that shoots down pretty much every pro-Jerry talking point out there.

ETA: Dak actually made $3.6 million over the 4 years he’s been in the league. I presume the $2.7 million figure referenced in the article is the money against the cap.

You're smarter than that. The ONLY number that matter is guaranteed money. Years is irrelevant in today's marketplace.

Looking at Watson, he is pretty close to what Dak has done but for some reason gets more positive press. Watson also did have Hopkins to throw to which is better than any WR that Dak has had.

I believe Dak was paid $2ish his 3rd year and $3 Mil last year. I think his total contract was around $6 Mil for 4 years. Just off memory, somewhere around $400k his 1st year and $600k his 2nd. I think he did get a bump up to around $2 Mil his 2nd year for out playing his contract, that could have been his 3rd year. I am not 100% sure.

That sounds like an oxymoron.

The most valuable professional sports franchise on the planet = COMICAL LEVEL OF MISMANAGEMENT

He got $2 million last year (which was tied to a first contract performance bump that is mandated by the CBA), and between $540k-$830k for each of his first 3 years. Without the performance bump, he would have gotten about $1 million or so in 2019.

https://overthecap.com/player/dak-prescott/4848/

In any case, it doesn’t really matter. We’d both agree that he hasn’t been paid crap compared to his actual production. Before he even plays his first game, Joe Burrow is going to likely lock down more money (both actual and guaranteed) than Dak will have received in his first 5 years combined....even when you include the upcoming franchise tag season. Let that sink in.
