D1 Field of 64

I looked before posting and didn’t see any other posts about this, but D1 released their field of 64 prediction.

1. Mississippi State(4)
2. Southern Miss
3. Clemson
4. Jackson State

That’s a tough draw from top to bottom.

Boy, that Ruston regional. Ole Miss facing Tulane with Olthoff game 1, then LA Tech as the 1 seed game 2.

Rebs would not make it 2 games in that regional.

Y’all would be heavily favored, but damn that would be a tough draw. A bubble host team, an ACC at-large, and a 4 seed that has an RPI of 97 and went undefeated in-conference at 24-0.

I continue to feel like we won’t get USM in our Regional as a high national seed. I think they will either host or be sent to a lower ranked host. Maybe Ole Miss, maybe Florida or FSU.

I do feel like we probably get an ACC 2 or 3 seed though.

That seems a little more likely to me. Although I definitely don’t love Louisville being our 2 seed. Regardless of their RPI or record, you know that’s one of the more talented teams in the country.

If we are going to get an ACC 2 seed, I would prefer a team that has a lower ceiling than Louisville. Give me someone like NC State or VA Tech.

Stanford is opposite us as the national 13.

Ole Miss is a 2-seed at Ruston (Louisiana Tech is a national 16 and opposite Arkansas). Tulane and New Orleans complete that regional.

Southern Miss is a 2-seed at Pittsburgh (national 15) with Arizona State and Wright State completing that regional.

If Arkansas and Vanderbilt are seeded 1 and 2, and we are seed 3-6, the earliest we could meet one of them is Game 2 in Omaha. I know other teams can beat us twice before that point, but that would be a really good set up for us. There isn't a complete, dominant team this year, but those two are probably the closest.

If one of them loses a few games and drops to 4th and we move up to 2nd or 3rd, the earliest we could meet one of them is the final series. But that's probably asking too much.

The 2 seeds always have wild cards among them that you have to pray you don't draw. The field always includes teams like Louisville or Florida that are very talented and might have been highly ranked but struggled to put it together during the regular season. You know they have the talent to win and never know when that talent might show up.

We have been that team several times in past years.

That would be the first time Southern Miss has been sent to a Starkville regional. In the past, we've gone to UM, LSU, Bama, Auburn and Arkansas, but never played a regional at Starkville. Jeez, what a draw that would be.

If the rumors about Leiter are true, then Vanderbilt in game two of Omaha might not be a terrible draw. Won't be any team that is in the winners bracket in game two of Omaha that is an easy out, but Vanderbilt would have been one of the scariest with Leiter pitching the way he was earlier in the year.

Louisville seems like a thorn in our side. I don't want to see them.

What are the rumors?

I haven't heard any rumors but I do know that the best pitcher in college baseball missing a start in an SEC series is a big deal. Not saying he's done or anything but he's got more going on than simple fatigue.

Rumor is he's done for the year. No idea if this is just speculation or true.
