No guarantees for the last 2 and RU can just pay her 490K of $1.4 million if they fire her after May 1. Interesting that Julie was very shrewd with this contract, giving RU an out but also rewarding CVS with 500K bonus if she made the Sweet 16...very performance orientated

I still think CVS will get one more year. The May 1 date is late in the game and if RU cans Jordan, I have a hard time believing CVS will go to.

An article like the nj.com one you posted was posted here a couple of times before.
One time to let me know that CVS' contract had a RU friendly buyout her last two years after I said that I thought she planed on only staying 2 years then retire because Rutgers wasn't obligated to pay her anything after the second year of her contract ended and she took a pretty big paycut to stay.

Yes it has been 4 years (2011-12 ) since Vivian has brought RU to the Dance.
In that time she has had records of:
16-14 (2012-13)
28-9 (2013-14)
23-10 (2014-15)
and this season's 16-12 (so far)

its a new article because both NJ papers are reporting on it today. Its relevant to those who don't know exactly how the contract works

I also think negative recruiting is going on. One about the terrible facilities and two about her retiring soon. I think CVS needs to sit down with Hobbs and work out her retirement date

Without disputing any of the facts... The poor woman is mourning the loss of her mother. at least let her finish the season first! btw, she's complained about inadequate facilities for years, but often got skewered by the press for speaking up about it. it's a shame that she won't benefit from the planned upgrades.

Thanks, glad to be wrong and apologize for my mistake.
Had a duh moment, but that's no excuse for posting misinformation that gives ammunition to those who claim it's time to replace C.Vivian Stringer

Perfect scenario: RU fires EJ, but lets CVS announce her retirement effective after next season, giving her a nice victory lap of a season. All the while, Rutgers is still able to do a new coaching search. She is a legend and she should be respected as one.

I respect and admire everything Stringer has done for women's basketball. She has been very richly rewarded for it too. Rutgers has been more than accommodating over the years! But the idea of a 'victory lap'...ugh! Prolonging the inevitable and it would kill recruiting...what little there has been in recent years.

I was not aware her mother had passed but not surprised given the news of late with CVS going to be with her. I am sorry to hear that. She has been thru a ton of challenges in her life but losing your mom is never going to easy no matter the circumstances. RIP.

Confused about what you stated :"it would kill recruiting...what little there has been in recent years."
There are some that claim RU WBB has been getting some real good players and the team isn't playing well with them on roster.
Now you imply that's a lie o_O

I said 'in recent years'. We have 3 very talented seniors and Scaife, the junior. Since then, the talent level, aka recruiting, has dropped off. I fear for next year...

Talent level drops a lot after this year. They had the pieces to be ranked this year and they wasted it. May be time for Stringer to move on.

I don't see the potential for a "victory" lap next year. I think she needs to decide if she wants to endure what could be a long final year unless she can get the team to over achieve.

I don't see her staying after the type of year this has been for her, personally and professionally.
But I have mentioned before this season started I felt this would be CVS' last season as the HC and felt that way since her contract extension terms became known.

I have all the respect in the world for Coach Stringer and wouldn't be one bit upset if she took a victory lap while going for 1000.

Agree. Not one top 100 player yet for next year. Like I said..."The Beginning of the End" Next year we have Tyler...period. And we end up w a below .500 record. Think that is bad..the next year CVS leaves the shelves totally empty for the new coach.

The talent level has dropped because no player in their right mind, if they had options, would want to play in this kind of offense. They also see what she has done to great talents like Briyona Canty and others. Canty has been ruined by her head coach and will have to be "deprogrammed" in order to succeed as a professional, if she even gets a chance. It's sad.

Other than Tyler, we haven't seen any hs all-american recruits in recent years, and next year's incoming class lacks any ranked players.

That is just nasty. Don't you know about Canty's history? There was a fear she would never be a successful player again, and she has been a contributor. I have no idea if she is going to try the next level, I don't know the real status of her knee.

You may think Rutgers players need to be deprogrammed - but you do know that several coaches and commentators have spoken about how well she develops players for the next level? I will say that I don't think she gets as much out of some players (over the years) as one feels somehow she ought to have - yet some of those players have also gone on to the "W".

As Vivian said some years ago, she can no longer recruit on her reputation alone. Everyone scoffed when she ranted a few years ago about the talent she was able and unable to get. There have been no "elite" players (maybe Canty, derailed by injury) since the Fab 5 that didn't work out. Copper and Scaife were good recruits, no question, but never recognized as in the running for best freshman in the country, which at one time as the level of recruit we could get.

In other posts, I've cited the issues that an older coach faces that really, really makes recruiting difficult.

To be clear, I am not knocking Canty. Far from it. Even post injury, she has all the tools (passing, defense, size, skill, athleticism, etc.) to be the best point guard in the country. She has just not been put in a position to succeed. When you have a point guard that excels in the open court, you tell her to go, go, go and live with the turnovers early so she can learn and get better. Canty never got that chance, instead Stringer just tried to plug a square peg in round hole and put Canty into the same stale, archaic system she had been running for years. It is a fact that coaching and playing style is integral to the development of players, even in the NBA. Just look at the D'Angelo Russell/Byron Scott saga. Canty put her trust into a "hall of fame coach" and now she is paying for it.

By the way, after Purdue missed the final shot of regulation, if I recall correctly, Rutgers got the rebound with around one second left. That would have been plenty of time for Stringer to call a timeout (they had one), advance the ball and attempt a potentially game winning shot. It is obvious that Coach Stringer's time has run out.

DMD......Great comment. I commend you for the good job you do on this board by encouraging respectful dialogue related to the women's team, the coaches and the fans. I know it's not easy keeping at bay those posters who thrive on negativity and criticism at every opportunity.
