from my anecdotal experience, seems like something is off this year in regards to early season interest.

I think most people just know this year's team has lower expectations...especially with Vanderbilt hurt. Once he returns things may pick up if the team can gel and have good chemistry in adding him to the mix.

you may be right. I have to believe part of it is the wholesale changeover year after year. Unless people are hyped for a kid to be on the team - like Barrett would have been next year, IMO, they wait to get a bead on what kind of team this is going to be.

I don't think it helps when you hear how we're going to suck early but we'll be a different team in March from Cal and every talking head that calls our games.

There is no emotional connection to the team for students (or a lot of other fans for that matter). When players are thru a revolving door it creates a different atmosphere than having a team that you feel like you know (even tho you really don’t “know” them in the true sense of the word. It’s part of the one and done culture.

this makes zero sense since the students themselves are just as temporary.

Agreed.

I connect with teams that win games and do well in the NCAA. I'm sorry but Bobby Perry does not connect more with me than a Malik Monk, or an Anthony Davis.

yup. and with twitter, youtube you actually know about guys coming in as opposed to 10 years ago when you literally knew nothing.

this "i dont know the team because of one and done culture" is manufactured by older fans who want to take a shot at cal. skj, wg, diallo are all back from last years team.

i remember just fine. fans just want something that is easy to blame. the uk fan base just isnt what it was and isnt as good as others. its ok.

Start naming college basketball fan bases more supportive and passionate than UK. Go ahead Mr. Mean streets of Boston.

You hold an event with 4 different programs playing at the same venue and UK fans will outnumber anyone 4-1.

Ever been to Cameron Indoor? It's pathetic. They have a crap gym and still can't fill the student sections. Coach k is on record calling out Duke fans over their support in Durham. Ice been to Cameron, the camera angle makes it look packed, but there's empty seats all over those student sections when I've been.

North Carolina? The Dead Dome? Yea, don't think so.

Syracuse? Lol.

Big bad *** UCLA at the pavilion? Laughable.

It's always been UK first and Kansas second, everyone else is behind spot 10.

That is way less than normal, but your comment is false and ignorant.

Yeah cut the student seats out and give them to more rich people you can barely get a golf clap out of during a 11-0 run. I say move the people from uptop around the Lower bowl make it an actual hostile environment. Its like a dull NBA environment.

I hear people always complaining about the blue hairs, the students have been pretty pathetic for the last few seasons.

While this thread is about the students, its not just the students in the last 2 games. There were empty seats noticeable on TV from any angle.

Sports attendance for the entire country for all the major sports is in decline. People would rather save the $ and watch the game on a HD television for sheer convenience purposes. It's also a generational issue...people in the 18-25 yr old range just don't have as strong a passion and deep connection to sports as the generation's that preceded them.

Tell that to Kansas and duke student sections. Blows ours away.

I've never seen a quiter student section. Every team in the sec has louder students. Really mind boggling.

Spoiled, half-scared, entitled fans who sit on their hands 95% of the game, just like their parents and grandparents who own season tickets.

The fans who attend Rupp generally suck *** when it comes to cheering. It’s been 20 years since UK could claim the best homecourt advantage. The elites scooped up all the meaningful seats for life and the rambunctious fans have been kept out of Rupp for a full generation now.

I’m still waiting for the obligatory post where one of our fans reminds us that donors have earned the right to treat Rupp Arena like a funeral parlor year after year.

I guess Kansas’ donor base doesn’t have a corn cob stuck up their arses like ours does, because it’s consistently pretty loud in Lawrence.

I hope this thread is quoted the next time someone starts a topic about renovating Rupp Arena. The reality is that any future renovation will result in a decrease in capacity. And those idiots that always chime in saying "We can't have that! We need to increase capacity to 30K!" need to be reminded about all the empty seats at this an most all early season games.
It isn't something new. Students have been staying in their dorms instead of coming to the games for several years. Not just at UK either. College football attendance has been on a downward slide for quite a while. Only stands to reason that basketball should see similar losses.

Agree. It's an awful home court as far as noise goes. One of the quietest in the country. Only at RUPP do fans feed off the team.

I say we do what tennessee did to Thompson boling. It's a beautiful arena that now seats just over 20k.

My kids at UK and didn't get this first batch of tickets to watch a bunch of nobody teams for $10 a pop, its also games during the holiday break when many students go home and lextran doesn't bus the kids from campus like they did when I was there...and it wasn't free but we packed the bus and that was part of the experience.

...so if you want more kids, get a couple better home games instead of nobodies and neutral sites, provide a way to get them there and back in the fall/winter...and you get more students.

...lower arena was pretty full but it was sparse up top tonight as well, not just the students section.
