And that's really all these bowls care about these days. Picking teams based on bowl attendance is primarily a thing of the past (although still a factor for the large power programs like Michigan, Alabama, Georgia etc.). They want good matchups that will increase TV and streaming numbers. That's pretty much it.
I also disagree that Rutgers would bring a drastically higher number of fans to Nashville or Charlotte than Minnesota. There's a lot of excitement around that program right now and they have many loyal supporters. That type of excitement isn't there for Rutgers right now as our small home crowds during the second half of the season have shown.
And you can't use bowls played almost 20 years ago to make the case that we're some sort of bowl attendance powerhouse, either. 2005 Insight Bowl was the first bowl in many Rutgers fans' lifetimes and was a completely new and fresh experience for many of our fans. 2006 obviously doesn't apply either since that was a historic season for RU football. And sure, you can point to the Pinstripe Bowl's decent showings but everyone knows that's a train ride away from campus. Attendance at other bowls in Detroit, Birmingham and Orlando wasn't particularly strong for Rutgers. Toronto was pretty solid but again, that was a different era at Rutgers.
Let's just be happy with whatever bowl Rutgers plays in. There are valid reasons why we're not being chosen ahead of more established B1G programs...yet.
