CU accidentally approved illegal contract for Mel Tucker

A former student of mine broke this story today about CU:

State law prohibits any higher education employee to be contracted for more than five years. So why did University of Colorado Board of Regents approve a six-year contract for new football coach Mel Tucker on Wednesday?

In a word: oops.

Wednesday morning, the board voted 6-2 in favor of Tucker’s contract to run Jan. 1, 2019 through Dec. 31, 2024. That’s six years. Based on the language of the approved contract, which includes annual raises of $275,000, the deal is worth $18.5 million rather than $14.8 million.

They might have to keep Tucker as long as they did Macintyre, cu is not considered big time enough for a top flight coach to take the job there. cu didn't have Tucker in mind immediately when they fired Mac, kind of like when Solich was let go, "let's just give it to the first one that accepts." :D

True and Tucker comes in and brags about their national prominence, history and facilities like they are Alabama.

Yeah...how is this a thing? Their new coach just signed a lotto ticket for 18 million dollars...the idea that coaches may or may not think a job is worth the risk is outdated. The money talks.

Tucker doesn't even have to do all that well to keep the job. Had McIntyre's Buffs not completely melted down at home against an absolutely horrible Oregon State team, he goes 6-6 and probably gets another year. Get that game and a win over any one of three other bad teams - Arizona, USC or Cal, and the Buffs are 7-5 and Mac is probably safe for another 2-3 years.

Tucker may or may not work out, but the expectations of him are not exactly lofty.

A fair amount of cu fans still think they are an elite program and that they should be a top 20 team every year, especially the nuts on netbuffs. This is going to be the hire that will elevate them back to late 80's, early 90's type of success. :rolleyes:

This is kind of what we're hoping for out of HCSF correct? Hate to say it but we haven't been elite for many years.

Very crazy their downfall this season.... they were undefeated and ranked in the top 25. Next time i heard from them they were firing their coach.

Colorado shouldn't be anywhere near as bad as they are for the last decade plus. There's no reason they shouldn't be a top 30 type of program.

They seem like an odd fit in the PAC 12 to me. Maybe the move there has hurt them.

When Gordon Gee was at cu, he made it easier for academic at risk players to get into the university, no coincidence that the buffs had a rise in better athletes during his time and for a short time after. But the high tower folks who detested sports let their feelings be known, and there was quite the war going on inside the administration that still lingers today.
