A better slate of games than last week, with the two biggest being Jacksonville at QND and Springfield at SHG.
Friday high temps of around 75 but it should cool off as the evening goes on, A high of 79 expected for the Saturday afternoon game between Southeast and Lanphier,
Friday
Chatham (6-0) at Lincoln (1-5)
The Titans should get the reserves in by the 2nd Quarter. Chatham 51 Lincoln 0. Massey: Chatham 48-6.
Eisenhower (0-6) at U High (2-4)
U High won 40-12 last season. Eisenhower's QB is shifty and has a strong arm. However, the Panthers only dressed around 25 for the Rochester game last week. That forces too many players to go both ways, and the defense is giving up almost 50 points a game. U High ends the season with Eisenhower, Southeast (1-5) and Lanphier (1-5), so 5 wins is still very possible for the Pioneers. U High should rebound from back-to-back rough outings against Rochester and Chatham. U High 44 Eisenhower 18. Massey: U High 47-7.
MacArthur (5-1) at Rochester (5-1)
Homecoming week for Rochester. The Generals own one-point wins over Springfield and U High and got their 5th victory last week against Lincoln. Their one loss was significant, a 49-0 road defeat against Chatham. Rochester's offense was solid against Eisenhower last week but the defense and special team play, which both were excellent against U High, was a bit sluggish. Rochester will be looking for a fast start on offense and want to put the Generals into passing situations on defense. Rochester 45 MacArthur 13. Massey: Rochester 49-14.
Jacksonville (3-3) at QND (4-2)
QND won 35-21 last year. Both teams have narrow losses to Springfield: 35-29 for the Raiders in Week 5 and 28-17 for the Crimsons last week. Jacksonville needs to win either this game or next week against MacArthur (also on the road) to get 5 wins. QND will get at least 5 wins, even if they would lose this week. The Crimsons are run-first more so than most CS8 schools, attempting only 5 passes last week against Springfield. QND has a better balance between run and pass. I would expect QND to put 8 or 9 defenders close to the line and dare Jacksonville to throw it. QND 34 Jacksonville 22. Massey: QND 42-19.
Springfield (5-1) at SHG (5-1)
The battle of Washington Street. SHG pulled away in the 2nd half last season and won 35-7. There are three common opponents. Jacksonville provides the best comparison. SHG won in Week 3 55-20, while Springfield won 28-17 last week. After giving up more than 40 points in both Weeks 1 and 2, the Solons defense has been making some strides. Against probable playoff teams the last two weeks, they surrendered only 29 and 17 points. Springfield's QB Brody Scheffler has had an impressive Senior year, and he has several deep threat receiving options. SHG has scored over 40 points every game this season, except Week 1 when they faced the number one team in Missouri. Cyclones QB Cam Brinkman is enjoying a strong 2nd season at QB and is a dangerous runner along with being a passing threat. I expect this to be close into the 2nd half but think the Cyclones will eventually pull away. SHG 45 Springfield 28. Massey: SHG 48-21.
Saturday
Southeast (1-5) at Lanphier (1-5) 1 PM
The battle of the East Side vs the North End. Southeast won easily last year 56-0 but has given up 47 points or more in every game so far except for their 14-6 win over Lincoln in Week 2. Lanphier won 18-14 in Week 1 over Lincoln but has surrendered over 40 points in each of the next five weeks. Both teams have struggled to score points as neither has yet to reach 20 in a game. Compared to last year when the Spartans were 2-7 and the Lions 0-9, Lanphier's showing some small improvement and has the home field advantage. Southeast still has a shot at 3 wins but so far it's been a tough season for the Spartans. Lanphier 26 Southeast 22. Massey: Southeast 34-21.
