The first week of conference games. Multiple running clocks likely, with the U High/MacArthur contest being the most interesting of the six games.

After last week's brush with fall temperatures, it looks to be warm both Friday and Saturday. On Friday, highs may reach 90 but it should cool off some after kickoff. The Saturday matchup between QND and Southeast will take place in the heat of the day.

Springfield's playoff hopes took a big hit last week when they lost at home to Decatur MacArthur. The Solons were favored to start out 4-0 and will now likely need to beat both QND and Jacksonville to get to 5 wins. Should MacArthur beat U High and improve to 3-0, they will be in a strong position to qualify for the playoffs.

Friday
Eisenhower (0-2) at Chatham (2-0)
Chatham running clocked a Missouri team that they struggled with last year 48-0. Expect a similar outcome against the Panthers. Chatham 55 Eisenhower 6. (Massey: Chatham 48-7).

Lincoln (0-2) at Rochester (2-0)
The Railers are struggling and have lost to both Lanphier (18-14) and Southeast (14-6). The Rockets passing game was subpar against Mt Zion. This is an opportunity to work on that aspect of the offense before the Week 4 game against Chatham. Rochester 48 Lincoln 7. (Massey: Rochester 48-6).

SHG (1-1) at Jacksonville (1-1)
Both teams rebounded in Week 2 to even their records. SHG scored 65 against Mascoutah, while Jacksonville got 47 against Eisenhower. To stay competitive, the Crimsons cannot rely only on the run and will need a much better defensive effort than in their Week 1 game against Highland. SHG should win comfortably behind QB Cam Brinkman. SHG 52 Jacksonville 14. (Massey: SHG 42-20).

Lanphier (1-1) at Springfield (1-1)
Both teams share Memorial Stadium, so the Lions are the visitors in name only. After knocking off Lincoln for their 1st win since 2022, Lanphier lost 49-0 at East Peoria. Springfield has scored 93 points after two weeks but has also given up 84. This should be another big week for the Solons offense. Springfield 54 Lanphier 12. (Massey: Springfield 49-14).

U High (1-1) vs MacArthur (2-0)
The game of the week. The Generals beat Springfield 43-42 last week, with an injury replacement QB stepping up and running for 5 TD's. Not sure if the QB injured in Week 1 will be available. The Pioneers had their chances but fell to 6A Bloomington 19-14. I am torn here. A 3-0 start by Mac almost guarantees them at least 5 wins, as they still have Eisenhower and Lincoln to play. The Generals were able to match Springfield score for score on the road last week and made fewer mistakes late to pull of the upset. Mac's defense did give up almost 400 yards passing to QB Brody Scheffler after shutting out Mattoon in Week 1. U High's new QB Owen Kirby had a huge game against Peoria Manual but was less successful against Bloomington. Kirby still had 220 yards passing last week and is probably the key to the game. If he can get the ball deep enough times to WR Cade Cunningham, the Pioneers have an excellent chance. If Mac wins, it will be because of their running attack and getting enough pressure to bother Kirby. The Pioneers still have a good path to 5 wins regardless of the outcome. U High 24 MacArthur 20. (Massey: U High 41-21).

Saturday
QND (2-0) at Southeast (1-1) 1 PM
QND has only given up only 1 TD after 2 weeks. After a disappointing loss in their first game at the renovated Spartan Stadium, Southeast won a road game against Lincoln last week 14-6. QND has too much firepower for the Spartans. The Raiders won by running clock last year and a similar result Saturday should be expected. QND 44 Southeast 7. (Massey: QND 42-6).

I think you hit a lot of my points for the U-High/Mac game... I'm, up front, just super excited (a little giddy) that Mac made this week more interesting. Mostly because week 3 was circled for me early on as one I could miss or go elsewhere outside the league with QND on Saturday...

"Not so fast!" said Spates!

Initial, first glance opinion... U-High by a two scores.

I have to believe the Pioneer defense is better than Springfields. And I have to believe that U-High's offense is as good, or maybe better with Mr. Cunningham, than Springfield's offense. Therefore, I feel like U-High will sort of cruise... If Mac is legit, their defense will be the key to their success against the Pioneers. Mac's offense has the athletes, per the usual, to score some points in this league. Stopping Mr. Cunningham is a tall ask for literally anyone in the state, but he's one man. Spates has had some fierce D-lineman and a few good linebackers in my time following the CS8. I didn't see any of them when I saw Mac play Mattoon week 1. So if they're available... it's time to show up and show out.

Hey Guys , I'm curious how your crossover games with the CS8 (West) are determined? At first glance, U-High has an easier road compared to both Chatham and Rochester.

I think it is largely at the discretion of the AD's/Head Coach of each school with some minimal coordination to make sure everyone gets two games. I believe the initial crossover schedule is good for '24 and '25 and could be adjusted in the future.

All.... Yes when the CS8 went to the East and West setup the agreement was for no changes for two years and then a review with movement between schools that were interested. I would assume those teams considered upper tier will remain the same. Ratsy

Wasn’t the original idea that after the first two years that 1 and 2 from each side would play each other, 3 & 4, and so forth. Did that get canned in order to protect SHG vs Rochester and Glenwood as yearly games?

I don't mind Mac... but it'd be nice to play someone other than Lincoln. I understand that sounds awful, and maybe it just is and I can't avoid that, but QND needs more from their crossovers than we're currently getting with Lincoln/Mac...

I don't mind the 2 year cycle personally. Gives you a nice home/away setup. I like visiting the other venues, even Lincoln (once). If they went to a weighted or ranked/tiered setup on a 2 year cycle I'd be perfectly content. And yes, I'm aware that likely means QND would be playing some combination of Chatham/Rochester/U-High. I'd still be content.

However, I'm also aware rivalries and relationships existed prior to our own existence in this league. So if they decide to protect certain games, I'm also content with that. We're happy to be here is all, if that wasn't clear. lol

What would a list of "protected rivalries" even look like in the CS8?
I'll give it a shot for s**ts and giggles since it's Wednesday and I'm itching for games to be played again already...

1. SHG/Rochester (The Leonard Bowl - is it still called this?)
2. SHG/Glenwood
3. Rochester/Glenwood
4. Southeast/Lanphier
5. Mac/Ike

??? Are there any others that matter? I'm unsure who SHS considers their biggest rival in the league... SHG maybe?

We could always just create them ourselves... surely there's a narrative to be had to find some "hatred" for motivation...

QND/Jax?
QND/Rochester? outside the playoffs in this case
U-High/Rochester?
Mac/QND?
Ike/Lanphier?
Lincoln/U-High?

This sounds like a fair idea that would make scheduling a lot easier for the AD's, but unfortunately doesn't guarantee rivalry games.
Or go 1 plays 1, 2 plays 2, etc. and it's on the AD's to sign the other game. Maybe that would help keep some of the rivalries intact?

Most of the CS8 is from the old Capital Conference so those rivalries are 4 decades old or older. Rochester/SHG are rivals because of the Dad/Son situation... So the Rockets have no rivalry to speak of. Rivalries can't be "one-sided" or its not a rivalry! So who Rochester leans to as a rivalry is most likely Chatham. Jacksonville had a short, very competitive rivalry with SHG back a few decades ago but not so much now. QND would be a natural rivalry for Jax. The Decatur schools will be consolidated soon so they will not have a rivalry game unless the CS8 adds Mt. Zion. I think we are stuck with what we have...

That was the one pick I would be surprised if it actually happens.
Jacksonville looked small compared to Highland so trying to run the ball, being that small, against SHG... even if the Cyclones are not as good as they once were, does not bode well for the Crimsons.

I can see a 32-18 type of game.

@AlabamaTimberwolf you aren't wrong... concern for sure if SHG is giving up 37 ever against Jax, let alone this year.

This pick is surprising... to say the least.

That said, it's important for SHG to not overlook Jax this week. I know they're itching for payback in week 4, and I promise QND has the same itch, but one game at a time is just always a good reminder for the young lads. Don't get caught in the trap!

QND were happy just being here last year. The surprise was real for some, but the new has clearly worn off and my colleagues at our Springfield facility are chomping at the bit to reclaim their throne it would seem. One particular colleague, love the dude btw, (great guy, great sales rep, great golfer!) let me know "things will get back to normal after we put QND back in their corner." He said it as a joke, bc we both laughed, but I know deep down he's quite serious. He has a son on the team currently. Welp... say less old friend, I know the Raiders will be ready! I'll admit, I'm guilty of getting too excited too early as well... I'm already giddy like a child on Xmas Eve for next week.

All.... As I mentioned in another post the Titans I felt early on in the season would look at all possible options of the postseason landscape. (5A, 6A, & 7A - play up) And I was told they did.... Roll the dice. I still have them in class 5A after two weeks. Many possible changes up and down. It's going to be close. Ratsy

I can tell you this... The Titans are not thinking about the 5A playoffs...

If SHG is looking forward to the QND game that's bad MOJO! Losing a game that one is looking forward to is a death nail to a teams psyche... The old sayin..."Be careful of what you want ya just might get it" amply applies to that game.

Titan O starters are out of the game with 4 minutes left in the 2Q! No sense it keeping them in for another easy score.
