Final
Rochester 42 Gibson Southern IN 21
The Rocket offense showed plenty of big play capability but struggled for much of the contest to sustain long drives, which led to a huge time of possession advantage to Gibson Southern. When Rochester couldn't score in 1 or 2 plays, they were sidetracked by holding penalties and two offensive pass interferences, one which negated a TD. Too many 3rd and 20's mixed in with 3 turnovers on the day. Gibson Southern's QB was solid, and they were able for 3 quarters to move down the field 5-10 yards a time, mostly through the air. The Defense stepped up after Gibson closed to within 28-21 and ended up with 3 Interceptions on the day. They also put better pressure on the QB in the final quarter, despite multiple cramping issues. Plenty to work on going forward but a good start.

I was very impressed by GS. Disciplined and athletic, they threw out a Rocket-esque hurry up offense that stymied RHS with sit down passes in uncovered holes throughout the Rocket zone secondary. As soon as Buecker switched to man, GS's QB, who apparently had an RPO on every play, would crack a sneak and get the 1st down. In the end, the Rocket athleticism along with big edge defense play was the difference.

Like @rocketnation said, lots to work on, but the Rocket defense being much improved this year will serve Leonard well. Connor Broughton and Xander Bridge will be giving CS8 O-Lines fits this year. Sophmore Khordell Gregory and Junior Nate Swaney will be big playmakers on the offensive side of the ball.

Agree with what was stated above. Thought the Rocket oline did a good job creating some running lanes and for the most part handled a very good d-line. GS has a 3-time all-state d-linemen and returned a lot of starters on both the offensive and defensive lines. It was good to see the hogs for the Rockets have a good game against a quality front both ways.
Overall a good start, things to watch for improvement will be penalties and conditioning. More cramping than I expected from Rochester, who showed good depth, with both teams running an up tempo offense.

Rejoice all - football is here. See you on the roads.

All.... The Indians from Mascoutah have a new starting qb but do return RB junor Sean Murphy. Last season rushed for over 1300 yards and 17td's. He had a couple of rushing scores in their losing effort with the Cyclones in 2024. The kid is not real big but fast and runs well between the tackles. In the teams 41-20 loss Friday to Belleville West finished with 168 yards on the ground scoring twice. One to watch and cover tight.

Mascoutah also returns two receivers Jordan Beck (25-296 4tds) and Carmen Reed (15-206 2td) both have pretty good hands. Ratsy

Looking forward to the Bloomington/UHigh and Rochester/Mt Zion games... Not that I think UHigh or MtZ win but how do UHigh and Rochester play in WK2!

All.... Cycs get pounded in town tonight by CBC. I have only seen one team with a player I deem to have "elite speed." A player from Indianapolis Cathedral when SHG played them in town many years ago. The Cadets had three at RB, QB, and WO. Difficult at best to cover all three with no break outs. Throw in 11 big boys at 260 or better three of them at 300 or better and it's going to likely be a rough night. Cycs offense after about a quarter went one dimensional. They couldn't run against not only the big boys on the line but the big db's that were firing in and stuffing up lanes. Having said that their performance wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. Unfortunately one of the main concerns coming into this game was would they get out of it injury free. Nope.... And they were a bit banged up to start the game. On to Mascoutah.... Good night one and all.... Ratsy
Most of us predicted a clock would occur. CBC scored a combined 107-20 in the two game matchup

All.... Speaking of CBC just back from one half of the freshman game. at Ken Leonard field. Cyclones had their 28 players and CBC a few over 50 with of course many big boys. 6-0 and the Cadets score with a couple of seconds before half convert on two making it 14-0. Pleasantly surprised . SHG has some decent size on the team. Not like the 300 pounder that has started pounding the corner leading the very talented Cadet running backs. They started to sub late in the second. Going to wear SHG down in the second half. Ratsy

All.... The Titan school enrollment has been adjusted. Listed initially at 1400.00 with what looks like a continuing push down then up with qualifying postseason teams their was a possibility of Chatham dropping into class 5A as one of the largest of the 32 schools. Latest school enrollment is now 1459.00. Although in some of the other Ihsa pages still showing that first number. This doesn't sound like much but could keep them in 6A. We will see. Ratsy

Noticed that most of the public CS8 schools increased a bit from the earlier #'s (which were all down quite a bit). Rochester went from 681 to 693. Springfield was under 1,300 initially and is now 1,312 and the Decatur schools (combined) went up by about 100.

A running clock seems to have proven my point.
I remember when Rochester scheduled Loyola last minute... we all applauded and thought it was great. Regardless of outcome, most felt it was a statement of "anytime, any place..." I understand these games with CBC were scheduled well in advance, but sheesh, tough crowd...
I guess those things only apply to public schools in Sangamon County...

Sometimes you're wrong, I'll admit I was in this case. Glad I could assist you in feeling accomplished one time, cigerto.

Given the fact 5A hasn't been above 1400 students for the past 15 seasons, let's go with 6A and stop the guess work

I think they use the enrollment number effective September 1

It seems facts and logic are offensive to those without championship trophies

Right. Facts and logic when it involves you and your people... but guaranteed blowouts and "don't waste your time on this one" when it's someone else playing the big game. Got it. Thanks for clearing that up finally.
