Unlike the last two years, which featured extreme heat plus thunderstorms, Week 1 looks to have outstanding weather.

3 games with out of state opponents and 1 CS8 vs CS8 contest (Lanphier vs Lincoln). 3 games also played on either Thursday or Saturday.

Remember, everyone has hope until at least 7:05 pm game night. Good luck to all.

Thursday
Springfield at Champaign Central (6 pm)
Springfield won 44-12 last year and perhaps have the most returning starters in the CS8. Central was 3-6 last year. They do return a QB with some starting experience and got a 1,000-yard RB transfer from Centennial. Springfield needs to rack up as many wins as possible in the first half of the season, as they end it with 5 teams in a row that made the playoffs last year. Springfield 38-20 (Massey: Springfield 35-14).

Friday (All Games at 7 PM)
Lincoln at Lanphier
Lincoln won 32-0 last year and ended with a 4-5 record. It was the closest contest of the year for the 0-9 Lions. Lincoln has a new QB and mostly new skill players with their most experience on the O-Line. Lanphier does return their same head coach and that should bring some stability to the program, but wins are still going to be hard to come by. Lincoln 30-6. (Massey: Lincoln 42-13).

East Peoria at Southeast
East Peoria came from behind at home last season to edge Southeast 28-26 in Coach Nate Borders first game. East Peoria went 4-5, while Southeast was 2-7. The Spartans return QB Tony Boyd who had a solid season in '24 and have a chance to win in the first home game at the renovated stadium. This should be another close contest. I've been burned before by being overly optimistic about Southeast. Here I go again. Southeast 33-30. (Massey: East Peoria 30-28).

Grandville Hillsboro (MO) at Quincy Notre Dame
I know nothing about Grandville other than they were 4-6 last season. QND had a great 1st season (10-2) in the CS8 but was hit pretty hard by graduation and will be starting a new QB. This is a good opportunity for him to gain needed experience. QND 35-10. (Massey: QND 46-6).

Christian Brothers (MO) at SHG
CBC was 9-2 last year and is ranked as the 4th best team in Missouri. They have multiple D-1 prospects. There's no doubt SHG has the most challenging Week 1 opponent of any CS8 school. CBC won 45-0 last year. SHG returns QB Cam Brinkman and RB-LB Mikey Groesch. They should both have big years, but this is a very difficult opponent. CBC 39-17. (Massey: CBC 42-7).

U High at Peoria Manual
U High won 64-28 last year. Peoria Manual ended the season 1-8. The Pioneers, which made it to the 4A semifinals last season, will miss elite QB Alek Weiland but should win this one easily. They do return WR Cade Cunnigham, who led the CS8 in Receiving last season. U High 49-12. (Massey: U High 44-10).

Mattoon at Decatur MacArthur
Mac won easily last season 47-6. Both teams went 2-7 in '24. That was a big drop off for the Generals, who were 6-4 in '23. The rumored return of elite RB Myson Johnson Cook from Texas turned out not to happen. Will MacArthur be closer to their '23 or '24 team this season? Regardless, they should start out 1-0. MacArthur 34-14. (Massey: MacArthur 35-16).

Decatur Eisenhower at Streator
Streator won 20-12 last year. They were 3-6 in '24, while Eisenhower was 1-8. This should be another competitive game. Ike returns RB Jaterryon Moore who rushed for over 1,000 yards and 12 TD's last season. Streator should get a close home win. Streator 28-20. (Massey: Streator 35-21).

Chatham at Edwardsville
Chatham has a chance to make a statement to rest of the conference against a strong 7A/8A program. Edwardsville won at Chatham 14-7 last year, after the game was postponed a day due to lightning. The Tigers went on to a 6-4 season and a 1st round 8A playoff loss to eventual runner-up York. They return their starting QB and a dangerous WR but the Titans have the experience advantage this year. QB Colten Knoedler, RB Grady Mueller, and WR Blake Lehnen are all multi-year starters who should have big Senior seasons. I expect this to be a hard-fought game, but the Titans should come out on top. Chatham 35-24. (Massey: 41-14 Edwardsville).

Saturday
Gibson Southern (IN) at Rochester (2 PM)
Gibson Southern was 7-3 last year. They came from behind in the final minute last week to edge Danville (IN) at home 35-28. They have a QB who is a threat to both run and pass and had a big game last week. Having played a game already should be helpful to Gibson Southern. Rochester will be playing its 1st game at their renovated stadium. It appears that Senior Tanner Beal and Junior JP Leonard will share time at QB. Will it be a 50-50 split and could Sophomore Khordell Gregory also get some snaps? This will be a strong test for the Rockets and an indication particularly of the progress of the Defense. Rochester 38-27. (Massey: 36-26 Rochester).

Highland at Jacksonville (7 PM)
Highland was 7-4 last year and lost to Morris in the 2nd round of the 5A playoffs. The Crimsons also made the 5A playoffs and lost in the 1st round to Joliet Catholic. Jacksonville returns their starting QB and two experienced RB's. They will have an entirely new Offensive Line and will need to have a better run-pass balance this year to be successful. Highland is always a playoff contender but I'm not sure how much they return from last season. This is a winnable game for the Crimsons and would give them a huge boost to start the season. Jacksonville 30-28. (Massey: Highland 38-20).

All.... CBC @ SHG.... As I have mentioned numerous time the Cycs need to try to keep this game as close as possible, come out of it injury free , and lasty learn from it while moving on. A review by the rodent can be found of what the Cadets bring back for 2025 in rocketnation's other thread" CS8 Predictions. " subject thread post #2. Would I be happy with SHG scoring 17 points? Maybe.

On a separate note. I heard about this just in passing a few days ago on sports radio 1450. Late in the SHS/Normal U scrimmage game a pass is thrown to the intended Pioneer receiver. But another receiver nearby catches the ball and the two collide. One of them is injured and an ambulance has to take him off the field with a bad knee injury. They didn't give the players name. Ratsy

Per the Decatur Herald and Review, the top returning rusher in the CS8, Jaterryon Moore, transferred from Eisenhower to MacArthur during the offseason. Good for the Generals and bad for the Panthers. Moore ran for 1,046 yards last season, with an average of 10.7 yards per carry and 12 TD's.

-SE by 2 scores late. They need it. 28-13
-QND big 49-7

-SHG but close through 3 qtrs. 14-35
-Mac by 3 scores 26-6
-Streator picks the score 56-0
-Glenwood Titan-thumps E'ville 49-7
-Rochester is back 42-14

The 4th ranked team in Missouri is only going to beat SHG by 2 scores? A school with an enrollment of 850 students....all boys, meaning they have almost 3x the available athletes as SHG which has only 596 students, 1/2 of which are boys. I am going to be shocked if there isn't a running clock....again. CBC, ranked 266 in the nation is going to play a full four quarters against the 2,055th ranked team in the nation?

This is why we can't have nice things

Like the picks!

Its a bad sign if SHS gives up 27 points to Central.
CBC by 4 scores.
I didn't pick the E Peoria/SE game but Im leaning on SE by -4
We are nearly spot on with Lincoln (31-12)
My gut tells me the Titans by 3 scores.
Rochester, once the rust is busted off, will roll.
I didn't pick the Jax/Highland game. Highland is tough. Jacksonville seems to have something to prove... With no $$$ I take Jax 35-31
I have Mattoon upsetting DMac 24-23 and don't ask me why because I don't have a clue!
QND 28-17 only because of knowing not a damn thing about Grandville and a rookie QB for the Radhas!
Since Ike lost its running back to DMac I didn't pick this game. Streator by 3 scores.

Agree with these picks here. Is Central that bad? I didn't catch the game last year, but I know SHS returns a bunch of production.

Central isn't great. And I think the key here is the expectation for SHS to take another step forward with the team they bring back. The core remains strong for SHS after last season. I do agree though, more than 2 scores in garbage time by Central is likely a sign of work needing done on the SHS defense.

Not CS8 related at all... but MF should beat every opponent not named Williamsville by 35 this year. The Sangamo is the worst I've ever seen this year.
Too bad. In the not too recent past, MF, Williamsville, Auburn, Athens, and Pleasant Plains all made it to the state finals. The Williamsville-Byron
state title game was a classic.

I know... normally we'd call it one of the toughest small school conferences in the state. But, for the first time in a long while it appears the race for Sangamo supremecy is a one-trick Trojan named Maroa...

I use to read his articles and enjoy his picks... I see they are still conservative with their scores lol. I see Greenville by 3 scores. Maroa will past Athens. Not sure PORTA scores 26... maybe 12. Pawnee will not lose to More.

Thanks for posting them.

Halftime

Central PA guy must have gotten some, uh, baking soda up his nose before this one

Next kickoff #21 Elijah Pruitt with the hit of the year so far in the CS8, but gets a block in the back flag. Happened in front of me, the kid who took the lick saw it coming the whole way.

Central 40yd toss. Senators secondary remains lost. PF on Senators late hit out of bounds. Central ball at the Senators 20. Couple plays later Central pass for 11yds. 1st and goal from SHS 7yd line. Senators hold, pass flat left stopped for no gain. Discipline killing SHS, unsportsmanlike Senators. Next play another throw, TD Central. All passes on this drive. Central coaching staff has noticed what I've noticed... SHS pass D is lacking tonight.

Senators pick off the 2pt... no good

Final, Springfield 51 Central 41.

Trailing 22-7 at half, Springfield outscored Central 44-19 in the 2nd half. Turnovers and penalties did Central in. They had 3 turnovers and mishandled a snap on a punt which led to a turnover on downs in their territory. Springfield, while sloppy at times, did not turn the ball over. Both teams had too many penalties, but Central's kept several Solon drives going. Central's defense got no pressure on QB Brody Scheffler as the game went on after a decent beginning. As you would expect from a 3rd year starter given all day to throw, Scheffler picked them apart throwing 5 TD's, at least 3 of which were to Kale Thurman (I had a lousy view of Scheffler's last TD and couldn't see who caught it).

Central had many more cramping/limp off issues than Springfield and seemed completely gassed in the 4th Quarter.

As Roamin said, the Central P.A. announcer was way over caffeinated. He will need tea w/lemon for sure tomorrow. Don't see how he'll make it through the whole season at this pace.

The Solons avoided a disastrous loss tonight but have a lot of work to do, particularly on pass defense.

Yeah it was crazy to see the Senators O-line grow as the game went on. Early, they were whiffing a lot on pass block, missing or just blocking no one coming around on pulls, getting no push for the RBs and just generally looking sloppy. Scheffler did a great job avoiding disaster during that stretch. But 2nd half the O-line started to really click. The most evident being the protection on passing (Brody did what Brody does) and on that one clock drive where they almost exclusively ran, the hogs were moving bodies at that point.

I think exhaustion took over for Central very early. They were ready to go last night and punched first, but they may have punched too often too early as the 2nd Half you could just see the energy level tail off for the Maroons. Bigger credit to SHS though in that moment. That's when you have to step on it and I heard the SHS coaching staff preaching "now's when we hit the gas" quite a bit after the fumble recovery deep in Maroons territory.

Honestly, we expected Scheffler to look like he did. And Thurman is going to torture some defensive coaches in the league this year. He was very good running his routes all night. I think my biggest takeaway was the Solon defense, as you eluded to in the last line. I use lost just for lack of a better term in the moment, but it just felt like the Solon secondary wasn't reading what they were seeing well. Credit Central for seeing it and attacking it but that version of SHS' defense won't win you the conference this year. But it's week 1, they've got some time to work on it.

Brody Scheffler has really improved in what I saw last night compared to what I saw a year ago (albeit in very strong wind) in the QND/SHS game. He also had about 5 to 8 more seconds to process on drop backs last night than he did against us but nonetheless he absolutely delivered when his team needed him to. Hats off kid, super solid performance! Also SO to Bryce Bryant, kid carried the load late as did my favorite CS8 RB Armanze Lewis. Lewis had a couple non-patented (but soon to be copyrighted) "Lewis Licks" last night. When the Armanze Express gets rolling watch out LB's...

I know since Nate A left as coach of Central they have not had the same environment. Reading about the team a few weeks back, Central was hoping for the 5 win mark but that may be tough to reach. First game is NOT a accurate view of a team but giving up 41 (and should've been more) is a terrible result. Much to work on for what's coming!!!

How did you keep up with the game? Radio or YouTube?

I was coached by a Illinois Hall of Fame coach (another dinosaur) ... the QND coach seems like a damn good coach. Im sure he's more... animated...off camera... but I have a lot of respect for what he believes. It would be interesting to watch him at practice!
