Omicron wave should be over by mid/late January in NJ/NY and a little later elsewhere. We'll be at herd immunity at that point and COVID will very likely become a localized and occasionally regional (especially where vaxx rates are low, as the unvaccinated are still much more likely to get infected - even those previously infected, as omicron evades immunity from previous infections quite well). Unless we get very unlucky and get a new variant that is as infectious as omicron, but more deadly - which is extremely unlikely, but possible - it's far more likely that SARS-CoV-2 becomes our 5th endemic circulating coronavirus, joining the 4 others that cause most common colds - and like them it'll mutate every year or two into something that will still infect people, but not be severe.Decent crowd (prob 80% full). Under normal circumstances this would have been a full house.
Let’s hope this wave dies down and we can get back to a more normal RAC in February with concessions back open.
Absolutely - was there for that game and it was probably the 2nd loudest crowd I've ever heard at the RAC, after PSU in 1989.Masks didn't stop the RAC from being very loud against Purdue so I call BS on that theory

Many of the non-mask wearers from Purdue also seemed to be missing tonightI would say maybe 10-15% of fans were actually obliging to the mask policy last month. Almost 0% of students were obliging.
Tonight I saw very few people not wearing their mask.
It definitely had an impact on crowd noise.
We agree on this, but it's not a zero probability. Please no
I forget if you posted this at some point/if I saw it elsewhere or imagined it, but (assuming COVID didn’t/doesn’t just go away due to vaccinations and herd immunity) we were basically looking for a very transmissible but mild strain to become “dominant,” right? Because it would make it tougher for new variants to survive by infecting people somehow? We agree on this, but it's not a zero probability.
Thanks, appreciate itYes, I've posted it and it's been deleted. The key is that it's very hard for something less transmissible to "win out" over something more transmissible, which is why omicron beat delta which beat the original strain and once 95% or more are vaccinated or infected with omicron, it'll be a mild disease for the vast majority of them, except for the occasional unvaccinated person with underlying conditions - and it'll also eventually infect people born after the last big wave if we don't get a pediatric vaccine soon or if people don't take advantage of it. A couple of posts on the future of the virus are on TOS now, although this will surely be deleted soon...

Everyone in our section was masked up for Purdue - can't speak for other sections...I was there too and were not vigilantly wearing masks at the Purdue game. With the recent Covid surge everyone tonight was masked up for the entire game and it definitely muffled the crowd noise, can’t wait until we can dispense with the masks!
Only about half were in my section for Purdue and the students had them around their ears, but were all barely wearing them. Take a look at the Purdue game tape and you’ll see. Big difference.Everyone in our section was masked up for Purdue - can't speak for other sections...
Cases and hospitalizations are definitely conflated right now, given how infectious omicron is, but deaths are never ascribed to COVID without cause. Also, doctors are not saying "cloth masks don't work" - they're saying cloth masks offer far less protection against the far more transmissible omicron variant (5-10X more infectious than the original strain) and N95/KN95 are clearly recommended now with omicron.
Agree it's always better to let the science speak for itself regarding vaccines, but if large numbers are going to foolishly ignore the science and become much greater risks for hosp/death and infecting others, then yes, we can mandate them to get vaccines - we mandate dozens of vaccines for children attending schools and it's worked beautifully until now.

Except that 90% of crowd didn’t keep masks on during Purdue game. Almost none on in student section.Masks didn't stop the RAC from being very loud against Purdue so I call BS on that theory
omicron=moronic...................who makes up these names?Over 95% are omicron

Lol. Omicron delta we only need epsilon and we have the economic honor society. I still have the pocket protector!omicron=moronic...................who makes up these names?
i also was in Eco Honor Society, but had no idea what the Greek letters are. Never got a pocket protector either. I feel cheated.Lol. Omicron delta we only need epsilon and we have the economic honor society. I still have the pocket protector!
Most of the season ticket holders showed up along with a good representation in the student section. The crowd certainly helped Rutgers win the game.Excellent crowd..students could fill in more but love this crowd
I think is was a pen actually but pocket protector always seemed like a better fit culturally. Lol.Me

The Docs I talk to all say the virus can spread from vaccinated to others. They all also say cloth masks are pretty useless. I did both but let’s not blame this virus in those who are non compliant. The cause is a lab leak and nothing has stopped it. Lockdowns delayed it. It is smart to get vaccinated to save ourselves. Just like not smoking, diet and exercise. We as a country have a habit of trying to blame everyone not like us when things go awry.Cases and hospitalizations are definitely conflated right now, given how infectious omicron is, but deaths are never ascribed to COVID without cause. This came from a lab leak. This is global and not every country is Red vs Blue or Vaccinated vs unvaccinated or masked vs unmasked. Yet they all have heavy death tolls.
Everyone should talk to their Doctor and ignore our politicians and bulletin board “heroes.”
Everything you said has been said in both directions and sometimes the same people have flip flopped. If you want non compliant people to be compliant our leaders and Medical community need to get their **** together and tell one story. You know like certain people partying in Miami without a mask or having birthday parties in Martha’s Vineyard without masks. How on earth can we expect skeptical people to comply if our leaders are do bad? The media and politicians have got out lied about this as have many on this board.unsubstantiated rumors are to be shared as facts
Facts don't mean more than opinions without proof they are true.
Just the idea it happened is enough proof needed to believe.
Conspiracy theories rule !!!!!!!!!!!!
But it has been said cloth masks aren't very effective against the Omicron version that spreading like wildfire
It also has been said regions with low vaccination rates could allow the virus that causes COVID-19 to evolve more rapidly, possibly yielding a more transmissible or antibody-resistant variant that would escalate the pandemic.
As for cloth masks they help keep infected droplets from escaping from the wearer when breathing out. But how much protection wearing one gives those around the wearer has been questioned.
The answer might be, a little protection is better than none when trying to protect those close by you..
If that's not your bag, let them eat cake , I don't want to be inconvenienced and it's a every man for himself world.
Cloth masks protecting the wearer from inhaling infected droplets doesn't seem to be a fact and a lot of scientific studies have said that.
So wearing one is best described as a way to protect others, even if it's an inconvenience to do so.
If you tend to care about keeping others safe, even those you don't know
Exactly what I did. Really worth watching our scarlet nights play.Eat before the game bring a small snack in your jacket pocket.

You must realize how obese Americans are. To maintain that level of obesity, 2-3 hrs without food is not an option. It's 2 freaking hours. humans can survive many days without food

Actually it’s the opposite. The obese and overweight can last much longer than the skinny crowd without food. They just need water so they are fine. You must realize how obese Americans are. To maintain that level of obesity, 2-3 hrs without food is not an option.
Curious…what is the rationale for not selling food ?? Concession line overcrowding (less distancing)?Actually it’s the opposite. The obese and overweight can last much longer than the skinny crowd without food. They just need water so they are fine.
