More than once called the CU game a “rivalry” game. First time I’ve ever heard a player or coach refer to them as a rival. I’ve never considered them a rival. Pieces of sheet for certain, but never a rival.

I sure as hell hope Eric Crouch considered them a rival when he played here. Might not have helped too much when Crouch played them in that last game, but Colorado definitely considered us a rival and that's the sort of thing that can happen in a rivalry game.

What do expect when Eric was the quarterback that got the worst beat down ever from Colorado

He also delayed our fall from grace for two years. I like him, and I agree with him about CU being our rival back in the day, and I think some of our fans have short memories about that, because they equate giving Colorado any kind of respect as a slap in our face and I'm not sure why.

There was a fair amount of hate in the stands during the CU games from the late 80's on, and it came from both sides.

Exactly. Crouch masked the underlying problems that started when TO retired. He was that good.

I’ve always hated Colorado, but it’s pretty much because they are uppity beeatches. They put together a few good teams here and there, and we had a few good games with them. Hating someone doesn’t make them a rival. I hate Missouri, and they’ve given us more trouble over the years (at least that’s what I remember), but nobody would call them a rival. Same goes for KSU. Conversely, I don’t hate OU, but they are a rival. Tell me again why Colorado is a “rival?”

I'm not going to try and convince anyone what to think on the subject, I'm just telling you what I think, and I think they were a rival, even if for only a short time.

I love my Nebraska fan brethren, but one of our most annoying habits as a fan base is denying everyone who claims to be a rival of ours.

If you derive any extra satisfaction out of beating a certain team besides just the win itself, that makes them a rival. Doesn’t matter about relative program strength. They don’t have to be on our level.

And there you have it. Anybody and everybody can be a rival, no matter the circumstances. Perfection. Actually, one of the definitions by M-W is "one of two or more striving to reach or obtain something that only one can possess." In the context of a game, that means every single opponent is a rival. However, the third entry in M-W is "equal, peer," but since it was relegated to the third entry, we'll go with #1.

I'm tired and want football.

If you think CU was never a rival then you're ignoring those late 80s - early 90s years. From 86 - 92 the series was 3-3-1 and CU won a national title. That game decided the Big 8 champ many times while OU floundered in the post-Switzer era. In 88 Nebraska only won it 7-0.

I can still picture the CU students charging down that black ramp in 89 after they beat NU in Boulder. I remember my dad going down to the 90 game partway in and I wanted to go with him but he said I had to stay home. I watched the teams slide all over that sopping astroturf all game. Dad said I was lucky I didn't go when he got back, it was cold, wet and miserable and they lost. That was the "No 5th Down at Nebraska" game and they came in and handled NU.

Then in 91 they tied 19-19 and CU loved it because we hated it.

That's why the 92 game was so special. They came into Lincoln on Halloween night, both teams tied at #8 in the rankings and the Huskers absolutely destroyed them. Kordell Stewart was hurt and Koy Detmer started as a freshman and just got wrecked. They ran the fumblerooski to Shields in that game.

Then CU was the team that broke Nebraska's back in 2001 with that 62-36 *** kicking. Nebraska was never the Big Red Machine again after that.

It's a rivalry.

I feel from '89-'07 Colorado was a rival. Oklahoma was down most of those early years and Colorado was the primary barrier to Nebraska winning conference and national titles. Later Nebraska was not in glory form and the games were still competitive. Most of the games were close and there was plenty of animosity between the schools and fans. Before and after that, they were not really playing for titles although the animosity lasted until they both left the Big XII. If they played regularly still, I think they would be considered a rival still.

Then I would have expected you to see that the type of rivalry I was defining has degrees. NU doesn’t have a THE rivalry because Oklahoma tucked tail and ran when they had the chance and NU feels to me like they’re crashing on the neighbor’s couch in the B1G.

Edit: love being in the conference, so let’s not kick off that debate!

Of course, not sure how I missed it.

But I also think frank babying him helped contribute to the downfall. Hey I'll admit I've never was or will be a Eric crouch fan, if bobby Newcombe hadn't hurt his knee Eric might never have started. IMO bobby was that special of a athlete

This. Some people talk as if our only true "rival" is OU. My gracious. CU was definitely a rival in the late 80's and 90's.

I just remember them inflecting one of the most painful losses we ever had.......and they just keep pouring it on.....

Can't woop them bad enough as far as I am concerned.

Crush them.

Go Big Red!

Well I admit I'm a huge Crouch fan, I love Heisman winners from Nebraska, so we're coming at this from two different angles, and you remember Crouch did come back and stick it out and prevailed. Everyone holding onto the grudge about his drive down I-80 needs to let that go.

Some of you young buck's don't recall the significance of this opponent in the past.

If we were playing Oklahoma Saturday would you feel differently?

48-18-2 record vs cu. How many straight wins between the early 60's and late 80's? I think the bluffs have always been obnoxious pretenders. I am far from a young buck, and, yes, I would feel differently if playing ou, even moreso because they were in the playoff last year and highly rated now
