At some point this 30 year series with Roberson will come to an end and Crest should move on.

Agreed. Crest fans will not travel and pay to see Crest play a team that is on the same level AT BEST as East Rutherford and drive an hour and a half up a Mountain when we can just as easily go to ER, RS Central or better yet, Gaffney. This needs to stop.

Good Crest fans will travel up the mountain to support the team. The whiney, bitching and moaning fans that sit on their hands at home games will probably not travel.

Enjoy your free Friday evening.

Have Crest and Gaffney play a two game series at Gardner Webb.

I will! Thank you! Can I also have back the money from my tax dollars the school uses to travel to play a team that is of the same caliber as a team 20 minutes down the road?

Better yet, I’d bet my bottom dollar if you asked the players, band, cheerleaders etc. The same question, they’d rather play a higher quality or equal too opponent closer to home as well.

Good luck getting any of those Rutherford County schools to return your call to schedule a football game. That is one of the reasons Crest still plays TC Roberson. None of the teams within 40 miles will play them.

Would love to see a home and home series with Gaffney starting next year.

Crest you drop TCR, we will drop East Forsyth (after the two year contracts are up), and then we play each other! I like that idea.

I don't think you really want to go to Gaffney.

Broad river cafe is pretty good. Mashed potatoes and gravy is always on point. Their fountain sundrop or whatever you call it is a family favorite.

Broncos is great but it’s too similar to mi pubs or Don Ramon’s IMHO but when it comes to Gaffney, I’d rather go to Cracker Barrel or Outback.

As far as playing Gaffney, Crest can do it. Yes Gaffney has won multiple state titles, but I know Crest has had some teams that would have stomped them. It doesn’t even have to be Gaffney. Clover SC isn’t as far as TCR and I believe even Kings Mountain should try to schedule Clover instead of TCR. It’s definitely A LOT closer to the Mountaineers.

Being an Indian for a while now, Id love for Crest to come to the reservation, after being around the program for long enough, It would be over by the 3rd quarter. It would still generate a lot of revenue and buzz being NC/SC and being so close to each other.
aaannnddd before the Crust faithful come jumping down my throat, its not a knock on them, its a 5A school with great athletes playing a 3A school, odds arent with them to begin with.

Rev are you keeping that wild man Coach Birch in line down there ? Speaking of crust and Gaffney one year the game ball was flown in by helicopter but that s all I remember about that .

The Mountaineers tried to get some of the local SC teams but could not work the schedule. I think they tried, Clover, York, and Blacksburg.

Didn't Gaffney beat that 97 Crest team that was fresh off of a title 42-0 or something like that. I know Richmond struggled to beat Crest that same year in the regional..

I think Gaffney beat Hunter Huss like 70-0 or something like that the same year.

Not gonna deny or lie, Gaffney most years would probably beat Crest down pretty good, but I know for a fact if the Crest 2014 or 2015 squads played Gaffney it would have been a different story. Either way, It’s not always about winning and losing, Gaffney is a storied program that is just across the border literally. It would be a great game even if Crest loses. The gate money would be excellent just because it is so close to home. And the players get awesome experience playing a talented team win or lose. Crest does the same thing with South Point (who by the way owns the series wins over Crest) why not attempt at least to play a program of a higher caliber that’s right next door...that’s all I’m saying. I’m just a fan, but it makes sense to me if Gaffney would be willing to agree to play.

Lots of variables in that game Crest having a new coach his first game. That was the best team Gaffney has ever had with the best high school football player I have ever seen playing QB. If Mike Stewart is still the Crest coach in that game we may have lost but it would have been a battle, and we would have won the state championship that year.

Crest played Gaffney home/home series in the 90's. Gaffney won both, but there were some great players on the field and one of the largest crowds I can remember.

I agree 91 with all of your points. HS sports are so dependant on gate money and the place would be packed. Football funds all other sports apart from. Bball so it would make total sense from a financial perspective. Gaffney offered burns a nice check just to show up at the reservation a few years ago but that coach between beam and dave politely declined and we ended up with a 10 game season

Wasn’t able to see it but wonder how that crowd compared to Crest vs Shelby in 2015. Crest-Gaffney 97 had the benefit of Burns and Shelby actually playing Thurs night so that might have freed up some additional fans.

It was a tough couple weeks for the Chargers that year having to play Shelby and their QB Norris Hopper the next week.

They followed up those 2 by playing an undefeated Ashbrook team and it was a no contest game. Showed what playing tough early season can do for a team. Also didn't hurt getting Brian Clemmons back at RB.

Thats a full time job keeping him under control. That man is passionate about football and will be a great HC somewhere. Maybe CC one day

Didn’t play well with others for the most part. Probably what made him a great coach. There was some bad blood over retiring a jersey. At the end of the day, I think he was sick of the administration and they were sick of him. No matter how good some things are, some things are destined to blow up.

Running out the clock at Shelby with the lead and then decides to throw it in the end zone... that’s the kind of stuff that even made Crest fans scratch their heads.

Looking at past seasons, he seems to be the best coach Crest had. Kirby wasn't bad either even though Crest dropped classes. He must have been something for Tommy Knotts to grab him as defensive coordinator. These days Crest seems to be enamored with those eastern NC coaches with the country charm but struggling offenses.
