IPA is a unique style of beer. Back in the 19th century, Indian dignitaries visiting britain fell in love with british ales, so they tried to ship them back to India in kegs. Because of the heat and slow journeys, the beer rotted, so british brewmasters learned that if you change the recipe and increase the hops to 2.5-3 times, the beer lasts longer. Hence the name India Pale Ale. Brits hated it at the time and it's all people from India ever got. Then out of the blue, a hundred years later, IPA's are the ****. Not for me.
I could not agree more...give me a good stout any day.

I think WV has a few good craft breweries. Mountain State only has one IPA that I can think of. I might try and go to their Morgantown location this weekend.

My all time favorite beer is from Greenbrier Valley Brewing Co. It's a black IPA. It may sound hipster AF, but Mothman is a bad *** beer.

Weathered Ground outside Beckley is really nice, but I never find their beer anywhere.

Mothman is one of my favorite beers.

Also...

GBVC Devil Anse

Big Timber Porter.

Stumptown Ales Six Legged Frog

Short Story Ready Steady Go

WV has some great craft breweries.

I never really cared that much for hoppy beer. Give me a strong ale/amber/red, and I'm good.

Do you get Great Lakes in your area?

Nosferatu is my favorite red ale. It’s a seasonal and just came out last week. We don’t get many of their seasonals in Clarksburg (other than Christmas Ale) but sometimes I get lucky and find them in Morgantown.

Big Timber Porter.
Big Timber Porter, is that the one that's flavored with tobacco? I love some Porters, but if that's the one that taste like you're smoking a cigarette, then I didn't care much for that one.

No. I'm going to upper midwest a few times soon, that sounds like something to look for.

Great Lakes is an excellent brewery. They've won national awards for two decades.

California Common beers are based on the original IPA style. They didn't have ale yeasts, so they used a lager yeast and fermented at room temps.
Anchor Steam is still the epitome of that Cali.Common style. Oddly the recipe topped out at about 40-45 IBU, which is medium bitterness in today's IPA world.

When I used to brew frequently, I wouldn't touch my IPA's for six months to give the hops time to meld with the malt and yeast flavors. Micro's don't have that kind of time to age popular styles of beers, they'd go broke.

I had to give up drinking due to a seizure disorder. I miss beer terribly. I'll make a couple of batches of beer a year for friends to keep my hand in it, but that's about it.
