Did anyone just see the Cowboys say they wanted to kick instead of defer? I had no idea if you didn't say defer, the opposing team gets the ball at the start of the second half as well. Dak is very adament that he said defer instead of kick, but who knows.

He’s only 95 years old

“Heads”
“The call was tails, Detroit ball”

It happened once while I was in high school. That is the only reason I knew it was a rule. Honestly it is pretty silly. Just allow them to say kick or receive. The whole defer process is weird and antiquated.

Florida did it playing us at home a while back when spurrier was there if I remember correctly. We got the ball twice, and beat that ***.

I saw it at an Egg Bowl back in the early 80's. OM won the coin flip and said they would kick. State received the ball in the 1st and 2nd half.

edit: On 2nd thought I believe it was late 70's.

Well you hardly ever see it anymore but I do remember the Ray Lewis Ravens using the defer as a weapon a few times. Being offensively limited, they’d defer then immediately force a 3 and out with them getting their first possession around midfield. They then chose to kick again in the second half and getting the exact result of a short field after another 3 and out.

But I don’t think I’ve seen it since so for all intents and purposes you could probably do away with the defer and no one would notice nor complain.

I’m not saying this never happened, but I don’t remember it.

It would be incredibly dumb if it did happen. You don’t give up possessions.

"New York" supposedly heard Dak say it, live. I doubt that, but the correct decision was made. It's one of the rules that needs changing.

I seem to remember that, years ago, it wasn't even optional. If you won the coin toss, you received the ball.

The NFL’s review policy gets more baffling. I feel like most reviews should just be a coin flip at this point.

1982. Steve Sloan told Keith Fourcade that if Ole Miss won the toss, they were supposed to defer. Instead, Fourcade said, "We'll kick". The Referee was about to ask him, "are you sure?" when our Special Teams captain (a walkon Engineering major) jumped in and said, "We'll defend the North goal". So, Ole Miss had to kick off into the rain and wind, and State won 27-10.

Coach Emory Bellard said he was "bumfuzzled" at the Rubbles decision to kick. I remember it well. We won that game, but I don't remember the score.

They first said they wanted to start on defense. Then they said they wanted to kick. Then finally Dak did say they wanted to defer.

The whole idea is that if you win the toss you get to choose what you want to do at the opening of the game. The team that lost the toss has the choice in the second half. So you can kick or receive OR defer your choice until the second half if you win the toss. Once you defer the team that lost the toss gets to choose at the start of the game. So saying defer is important

I remember in high school as a captain we actually had to tell the ref ourselves at the coin flip. I remember the coaches having to make sure we said the right thing and which way to defend. We also had to handle all penalty decisions. They didn't look at the coach they asked us. Now, the coaches do all this about 30 minutes before the game, and the players just walk out there right before the game more as a ceremony.

I was listening to the game on the radio and heard the coin toss. I love Dak, but he definitely said “kick” then “no, no, defer”. Sorry but he 17’d up.

I find the idea of the coin toss incredibly dumb and outdated. Just change the rule so that the "visiting" team gets the ball first to start the game and the "home" team gets the ball first to start the second half. You could also convince me to get rid of kick-offs and just line up and play ball from the 20 or 25.

I thought it was the 1983 wind blown FG game, but at any rate "defer" was not an option back then. You could choose to kick or receive, or you could choose which end zone to defend. The general rule was that you were stuck with the first words out of your mouth.

The way I remember it, UMiss wanted the wind at their backs to start the game even if that meant kicking off twice, so they were supposed to choose to defend the North endzone. Instead, the team captain said "We'll kick that way", pointing South. Since the first thing he said was "kick", UMiss had chosen to kick and MSU got to choose to defend the North endzone and make them kick into the wind.

In the 3rd quarter, State chose to receive, and UMiss decided they wanted the wind at their backs in the 4th quarter, so they kicked into the wind again.
