Ok, I apologize in advance as this is a bit of a rant. I hate to be pessimistic but I have a feeling that in a few weeks your gonna have a tough time finding a high school game to watch in the state. Unfortunately it's not gonna be the kids to blame but the parents.
Last Friday night I attended a football game and tonight a volleyball game. These games involve three schools including one being ranked #1 in the state for their sport. At the football game masks were not required but encouraged. They also had protocol laid out for concessions, restrooms, student sections, etc.... If you never knew that Covid19 was going on you'd wonder why a small handful of people were wearing masks. I witnessed more distancing on the sidelines than I did in the stands. Fast forward to tonight. At the volleyball game masks were required to enter the building. Half way through the Varsity game there were more players on the bench wearing masks than spectators. And that was only from one of the two teams.
Sorry, I just don't understand it. Do I like wearing a mask? No, not at all. Do I feel wierd, absolutely! Am I afraid of Covid? No, not really. If I get it do I think I'll be asymptomatic, minor symptoms, feel like crud for 5-10 days, or die? Highly likely only one of the first three. Same for my kids. Unfortunately more severe for my parents. With that said I also understand that if I get it my kid will be asked to sit out for two weeks. If my kid gets it their team will likely be out for two weeks. This two weeks could be during Homecoming, the Conference Championship, or district play. We put myself or my kids at risk of that?
We've been playing for less than a week now. Right nearby we had four highschools not play last Friday because of players or staff testing positive. A fourth school was closed Wednesday-Friday but the school allowed the football game to be played since none on the team had it. With kids now being near each other daily cases will go up and athletics will be effected. What drives me crazy is the lack of respect the spectators are having for the rules at the games. Due your part to stop the spread! Whether you think Covid19 is overblown or not, you know in advance what the repercussions will be if your community, school, staff, or athletes contract the virus. Respect the guidelines set forth. Its evident the schools will set guidelines but aren't going to enforce them.
I can't imagine my child contracting the virus and having to tell their teamates that the next two weeks will not be played. Could it happen whether or not we mask up? Yes, it could. Is it much more likely if we don't mask up? Absolutely!
