I don't think you understand the supply chain of medicines. What has happened over the past 35 years in the chain is that there have been multiple buyouts and mergers. Along the line companies sometimes completely quit making a drug and close plants because the drug isn't profitable enough. This is especially true for OLD drugs with generic equivalents. I don't know who makes chloroquine/hydroxychlorquine or how quickly they can ramp up production but you're wrong if you think it can happen overnight. It takes weeks to get it from the desire to increase production to then getting it to the patients. Then it isn't normally as if there's a bunch of excess factory capacity waiting around to make the stuff either. You CAN be limited by your physical plant and raw materials in how much you turn out. I see stories about pledges from major manufacturers to make the stuff but there's no comment on how long it will take to get to pharmacy shelves.
This is precisely the role though of government when working with pharma...pharma has no moral stake, their only goal is to make money and when it comes to medicines this can be a very unethical undertaking. Could Trump have predicted hydroxychloroquine would be so popular...of course not...but their does need to be a mechanism in place to drive production of certain medicines whether it makes profit or not. If the pharma company doesn't like it..they can go to another continent to work. Sadly they will lose even more profits because no other country is as friendly to big pharmaceuticals. The free market can never work when a person's life depends on a drug or a resource...ie water, basic food, or energy. Water and energy are basically public or have harsh profit caps...the same should work to some extent for medicine..of course certain medicines can be considered non-essential and be market based but others need pretty consistent regulation. Thousands of people die every year because pharma either doesn't think their medicine is profitable, drive up prices to make it profitable, or have created drug epidemics(opiates), to increase profit...

Understand, this drug was discovered in germany in the 1930s, and has been used for eighty years, its supplies and production are wide, world wide, and highly rampable, as malaria outbreaks are common
Chloroquine-resistant P. falciparum first developed independently in three to four areas in Southeast Asia, Oceania, and South America in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Since then, chloroquine resistance has spread to nearly all areas of the world where falciparum malaria is transmitted.

I posted in a prior thread we should know around April 1st how our measures were working, I was off overall, but not by a ton. NY may be reaching their peak, Washington is in better shape. All encouraging signs, the next week will still bring harsh numbers, but we may be seeing the flattened part begun.
Prepare for the worst, hope for the best. Here in WV we may have escaped a high first wave as our Governor half assed his way into a stay at home order earlier than I thought he would. It helped having DeWine and Beshear as neighbors.
Get past this first wave, hopefully have some luck with treatments and then be smart about bringing people back together in public spaces. See more than a little Dunning Kruger here on the board (although not from you).

ChiNA! didn't hide the severity. Their data may not be complete but it is consistent with what we have seen. 80/15/5/2. Trump has no understanding of science, didn't even know the flu killed that many people including his grandfather. The people who voted for him do not care if he knows anything about science, in fact I think he loses the election if he touted science knowledge. But the consequence of having an ignorant and resistant president, albeit a master politician who can be quite charming is thousands, maybe a million lives. We choose our presidents almost solely on how exciting they are compared to other one. The boring one never wins. I really hope this doesn't become what it could become...70 million people over the age of 60...25% infection rate...15% critical care...5-7% death rate...we are looking at a million dead just from that demographic. The one disadvantage we have is Korea, Italy, Spain, Wuhan were one single region...we have at least 5-7 separate epidemics going and no plan to quarantine them.

First off, that science argument doesn't hold water. Trump has put money back into NASA and projected our investments into space exploration that Obama cared nothing about (he sent NASA scientists to the Mideast in 2009 as part of a program meant to make those countries feel good about themselves - Google it). His administration rewards research and development from the private sector far more than Obama ever would. Drug companies have zero reason to pursue much of the expensive R&D work that socialized medicine would make completely cost-ineffective. It's the Republican party that acknowledges the actual time that life begins and not the one that tries to call it a lump of cells. It's Trump and the Republican party that seem to be the only ones willing to make hard decsions based on medical science like closing borders rather than act like the morons in Italy that were hugging Chinese people. Our technology companies have slowly come to realize their future is with the Republican party, and not with a party that is slowly creeping toward socialism. It's DJT that took a hardline with China in the first place, the country that steals our technology and violates our patent laws. Science is not a woke, foodstamp president. I could go on and on with this one.

The media hyped this China virus.

The sheep got scared.

The govt probably made things worse.

And only about 3% of you even questioned.

You stay here @oldjar07 . I'll move.

And the CYA for politicians begins.

Similar things happen for flu season, part of the reason I said yesterday that using numbers for the past 30 days to years past is misleading. Reporting and testing after the fact isn’t the priority, and perfect accuracy isn’t the goal here. There will be people attributed that weren’t truly COVID-19 related and people not attributed that should have been. This is the same type of thing that happens every flu season. Many consider these statistics to not be valid until at least 30 days post report for this very reason.

I think I will take the opinion of Dr. Fauci (or literally anyone else on Earth) over Tucker Carlson.

And I think we all can agree that this was in fact great news. Hopefully this becomes a trend.

You must be thrilled!! Yay!!!!
It's quite unfortunate that Trump is useless in this situation, but that was predicted based on his lifetime performance in business and the first three years of his presidency. So no, I'm not thrilled. But I live in the real world, not one made up by Fox News.

People die every year. 100s of 1000s. The real damage is being done now. Next time when it's something serious no one will listen. The longer this charade goes on to give you a false sense of security the longer people will be out of work and financially ruined.

Not the paper pushers who sit on conference calls all day or the academics or govt employees, but the ones already hurting, living paycheck to paycheck in lower wage jobs.

I'm sure you disagree with his actions here, as well?
I don't have a dog in this fight at all. I live in a city where my vote doesn't count, so I don't even cast one for president.

it's just fun to point out some, eh, inconsistencies in staunch believers' opinions from time to time.

"But, but, you're literally killing people." Sarcasm. And yes, I'm tempting the karma gods. But, WTF I've got a bunch of bad karma built up.

Of course I do, he’s a jackass. It is absurd to think the President should be getting advice on a pandemic from an entertainer, who pretends to be a journalist. But if A-Rod is a trusted advisor on Covid-19, then I guess this clown can be too.

You should vote, at least to feel good about yourself and let your voice be heard. At least in a minor way.

so, you don't think it was a good idea for one of the few MSM talking heads who's taken this seriously since January to tell the president to shape up with regards to COVID-19?

you'd rather he stayed home and kept to himself?

god forbid you agree.

my choice not to vote lets them hear it more than others toeing the line

I'm never happy with the 2 puppets that are paraded in front of us to 'lead the free world'. I wish 100% of people didn't vote for president, maybe then things would actually change.

Modeling is not science, and the scientific community has not been doing true science in a long time. Models are already tainted as the perceived outcome is built into the calculation. Conjecture. Look at the models that our politicians are using for this, it doesn't matter if data is showing a decrease over a few days, there is always an increase 2 to 4 weeks into the future. Flawed models.

I think it is a joke that a TV personality would have the ear of the President and that a “news” reporter would feel they can influence the President. The President of the US has the top scientific minds in the world at his disposal, he is privy to all kinds of info Tucker Carlson isn’t. He should give this clown’s opinion about as much thought as any schmuck off the street.

Are you able to leave Trump out of this and look at all known information logically?
