could mike brey replace coach k?

any shot? idk their relationship off the court. but in the acc boeheim and pitino and roy look like death and under some form of ncaa investigation. if k retires in the next three years do you think they would offer a k insider? or shoot for the fences on getting the best young coach available?

i effen hate duke, but they are a legitimate enough brand that i wonder this. brey seems to show up against duke and has a chance against unc today. who in that conference is actually primed to be good the next five years besides notre dame and virginia? jim laranaga is 100 years old.

No way in hell duke would take him. Plus coach k is only 40. He still has atleast 85 years before he hangs em up. I could see them going after Hurley or wojo in the next 85 years before coach k hangs em up

it would take him getting maybe two top five classes and he would win imo. it's different talent. k earned it and did it, but the reality just as when cal leaves that whoever follows will be playing with nukes as far as campaign style recruiting. especially if unc continues to scare off the best players from north carolina.

i'm ok being wrong. he's not elite. i just wonder first of the former assistants who is most qualified to take over. they seem like the kind of program too worried to hire an outsider. it's like k's legacy is too big. like dean smith followed by guthridge followed by dougherty. a good ol boy.

Coach K is an ego maniac. If he's alive, he will have full control over everything Duke does moving forward. He will be the coach long after he's no longer the coach, in a sense. He will stay on in some sort of role, keep an office, and help recruit.

They will absolutely stay in house.

I hear what you're saying but could he get those classes. I'm not about to say ND is Duke but they aren't shabby either but he's had problems staying consistent there. I just think the fan base at Duke wouldn't be as patient at Notre Dame does.

Brey is a very good coach. When he was hired in 2000 at Notre Dame, the Irish had not been to the NCAA Tournament since 1990. He got them there in his first season and will have them in their 11th NCAA Tournament under his reign. Last year in making the elite 8 that was just Notre Dame's sixth regional final ever and they have not been to the Final Four since 1978. He led them to a regular season Big East crown one year and of course last year won the ACC Championship. (the winner of the tournament in the ACC has always been the official Champion of the conference) Obviously by Kentucky standards or Duke, Kansas, etc standards all of the above is hardly anything to be bowled over by. But let's look at it by Notre Dame standards. They had forgotten what the NCAA Tournament was until Mike Brey showed up and right now he's the only coach in the country who can flat out say that he owns Mike Krzyzewski.

I doubt he'd end up at Duke but they could certainly do a lot worse for a hire. I think Brey is one of those guys that kids love to play for.

The one thing they have going for them that we will as well is he will have a say in his successor like k, cal won't hang em up till he knows it's in good hands

I'm an Irish fan and like Brey for their program. But so many of their big wins are upsets over Duke and other ACC teams. I'm not sure how Brey would perform with the target on his back every night.

Notre Dame has tougher academic entrance requirements than Duke. I read years ago the Krzyzewski lobbied the Duke administration to lower Duke's requirements for men's basketball down to the ACC level, and was successful. Brey would have a larger pool of recruits at Duke than he currently does at Notre Dame. ND might not be at Ivy League levels, but they are on par or higher than Vandy or Stanford.

He will absolutely have THE say in who replaces him. As far as the office, he'll have one somewhere in the atheletic facilities, and will be a must stop to talk to for recruits visiting campus.

K will be the last of the old guard to go...Roy, Boheim, Rick, will all take a bow before K does...his ego is not going to fade...he is Duke Basketball and he knows it and relishes it...I think he wants another couple titles, or at least final four runs...and I think he wants to be the last one standing out of his generation of coaches...

would also agree that he will have say in who replaces him...it may already have been decided...

Make no mistake about it. If ND wants an athlete in, they will get them in. I've heard that often from several ND alums I know. Brey is not hamstrung at ND by academics

You are all aware that Mike IS keeping it in the Duke family, right? A few posters don't seem to know that.

Not sure if he will get a look, but I like him very much.
