Could Lakers have interest in Cal?

I still wanna know who we could possible get to meet the impossible standard most fans on this thread set. Anyone who could come in and win immediately isn't going to leave their spot. Best case it's someone who'll need a couple years to build and there is no chance anyone screaming for Cal to leave is going to give them the time. If Cal leaves, most/all of the team leave, recruits decommit, and we go 18-12 next year on the bubble of the tournament. And this thread is started about that coach.

I'm by no means letting Cal slide on the last two years, tons of issue he needs to address, but I still think he's the best option right now. We're a Top 5/8 team all year and just **** the bed the last week of the season. Awful, miserable.

I still wanna know why you didn’t respond to what I asked you not very long ago? You know exactly what I’m talking about
Could you repeat the question because I honestly don’t remember
Btw If don’t respond right away is because I’m on break but I will answer your question to the best of my ability

It will be so hard to live up to these last 7 years for the coach that comes in to replace him 🙄

Some of you need to put the booze down.

As long as the new coach doesn’t…

- Miss the tourney and go 9-16.
- fail to get a 1 seed for 7 years.
- squander great final 4 opportunities.
- lose to teams like:
- Richmond
- St Peters
- Robert Morris
- Evansville
- Talk down to the fans
- Tell people that the SEC tourney doesnt matter
- Tell people that the UL doesn’t matter much because “it’s just one game”
- ignore basic half-court offense principles
- ignore any type of set inbounds plays
- ignore any other type of defense besides man to man
- ignore the fact that he has timeouts in crucial parts of the game.
- favor certain players over others with a longer leash when they are playing poorly.
- completely forget about certain players that could help you (Toppin, unforgivable)

…I think he should be able to be replaced just fine.

Edit: There’s so much to dislike about Cal that I didn’t even mention the whole NBA/draft/best day of the year garbage.

What a lot of you don’t realize is that even Triple C would have a lot more rope from many of us if he cared about winning for University of KY first.
He crams the NBA players first BS down our throats
He is an arrogant prick to KY fans
He would rather be home with his dogs than playing in the SEC tournament
His in game coaching is terrible
We almost had a none in done with Diallo
but will with Sharpe

I’ll take some tough seasons to have a coach that cares about winning at the University of KY first.

We had the worst season in 100 years followed by the most embarrassing loss for us in NCAAT history.
You can’t do that and still put getting players drafted first and talking down to the greatest fans in college basketball.

Im finished with him. He’s burned his bridge with me.
He brings nothing good to the table anymore!

Most winning coaches have a huge ego. Saban and Belichick both do. But they’ve earned that right.

Cal’s not won squat since 2015!

Vogel is getting at least one more year to try to sort of the mess the front office has created. I don’t think this is remotely true and hope now. Cal’s earned a chance to get it fixed at UK.

A change this late would be catastrophic for UK.
He’s had 7 years of chances. How many more first chances to change does he need?

If none of the 7 years have been acceptable to you than there is no coach in the world who is going to work here.
So it’s acceptable to you to go 9-16 , lose in the first round, and have arguably the 2 most embarrassing moments in school history in last few years, got it. I have higher standards than that.
When was the last final 4? Or even better than that when was the last tournament win? What is the school’s history on getting beat by 15 seeds or the longest drought for not having a tournament win? Maybe we can tweet Cal and break those records to.

There is no chance that they want him. Every offseason Cal plays this game trying to leverage a pay raise. “Players first” more like “Cal first”. He only cares about himself and that will always be the case.

You’re out of your mind. Just because some fans don’t agree with you doesn’t make them Calipari fans only. I’ve been a life long fan and will continue to be as long as I’m alive but I’m not apologizing for not trashing the coach, players or school.

This post you made was dramatic bs. I’ve never trashed the players or school. Any criticism of Cal that I have made has been fair and not even close to being outrageous. I’ve never once mentioned that he should be fired or anything of that nature. You had another post in that thread that was bs too. I plainly said SOME fans would follow Cal if he left and coached at another college basketball program. I think we have some people that would 100 percent do that because they love the guy. You don’t find it odd that some on here go crazy when people say anything close to being critical of cal? Every coach makes mistakes and that’s a fact….it’s strange that we have fans that can’t acknowledge that. I didn’t even single anyone out or anything, but then you admitted I had offended you by saying that in that thread. Lol I don’t get it.

Excellent post.

If it was a fact that UK cannot replace Calipari, they might as well shut the program down. Inability to replace Calipari would be a sad state of affairs.

Please Lord let it not be true.

I see some on here mention that “anyone who could win immediately” wouldn’t leave where they are to take that job. What makes you feel that way? I’m not saying I want Cal fired or anything like that. I’m just curious why some on here feel as if no one would want to coach here?

There are at least a dozen options that are better coaches than Cal right now. The problem is, when those coaches are mentioned, the Cal defenders start nitpicking them in order to shoot them down as candidates, using a much stricter standard than they ever use with Cal. It's hypocrisy on steroids.

Agree with you but disagree with the motive this time. When you see these leaks it's often done for several reasons. Rival programs used to do it in a manner to hope it hurt Kentucky's recruiting. There was the leak to help get him the lifetime contract which you were 100% correct in speaking to last time the rumors came out.

This time it's different. I think it wasn't from a Cal plant at all. Think it was lazy reporting by Sean Devaney and he was piggy backing off the Cowherd/Torres discussion. I'd believe the report a lot more if facts were spoken and facts are no matter what side of the fence you are with Cal, the fans are sick of several things and not going to be placated by his "State of the Union" BS. It needs to be results oriented to make them happy. So if a report came out and said "I can see INSERT NBA team getting Cal" due to the program being stale, Cal losing support/power, declining results....recruiting losses, etc....I'd buy it. Devaney stating "Cal is a god at Kentucky" is laughable. He's divided fans and if people disagree just visit this site daily.

What Cal's camp could do though--measure the response as he's very smart. Nobody who wants him gone thinks he's not intelligent--they often are pissed he treats everyone like he's smarter but smart people get out before they get got. Ego is out of control with guys like Cal and he's never going to get fired. He'll step down or leave this place in shambles to make him look better than get fired. Coming off a Pandemic, he's got a lifetime contract--aka $62 million reasons to want to stay in Lexington and live comfortably. 63 yr olds who state things like "Pretend we won" after a loss, or "I'm happy for him" referring to the coach who just kicked his *** at a hated opposing school aren't built for the daily rigor of the NBA and having to be told "**** YOU" by players when you simply try to coach them/the team. If Cal is going to leave for NBA it would be NYC where his people are aligned and he could pick a role that he'd be protected by them.

Also can't see Cal leaving in a year Coach K retired from sport. Nobody would remember or care nationally enough to make it a story. Ego......no matter how people at that level deny it....it's there.

He’s got the nba connections. He’s a winner. Hungry like you say. He would explode at UK and I don’t think he would want to be lifer bc once he wins in college I believe he will want another big nba gig. The show he’s created at Arkansas would follow him to Lexington. I read an article recently about his wife not wanting him to go to Walmart with her. She didn’t sound too excited about Fayetteville
If she didn't want him to go with her to Walmart to avoid being stopped for pictures every 5 seconds I can't imagine it wouldn't be 5 times worse in Lexington though lol

Todd Golden-but just got hired by UF

Eric Musselman

Scott Drew

Jerry Stackhouse

NBA Tree for someone--Dwane Casey and maybe bring younger guys like Rondo/Magloire back to Lexington as Assistants and try to groom one of them to be next HC--Rondo is a basketball genius and Magloire is Player Development guy for Raptors--love Nick Nurse. Or look to Heat franchise ties for someone like a Chris Quinn who learned under Pat Riley/Erik Spoelstra.

Guy I like a lot and has Jay Wright/Nova ties is Kyle Neptune but he needs to cut his teeth more. But was impressed by what I saw and he's in that area where Todd Golden was for me a few years ago when I saw him/like how he coached/how team played. He's further down the line but he has a bright future.

I'm looking established champ like Drew who may be ready to move....may not he built Baylor with his staff but worth a shot.

Musselman seems to have the combo of ego/passion to connect with fans that BBN seems to want.

Golden is a guy I was hoping wouldn't get a job like UF this soon but love the hire for them and like his style of play/coaching.

I'm a Stackhouse fan but as many shared last night-he's a UNC guy and for some that isn't wanted. Just like how he coaches/develops his players and think he's on track to be very successful, specifically if he got a job that would have resources like UK. Been an elite player/in blueblood program/NBA can relate to players and what they are dealing with.

Casey is a damn good coach but can see him not being afraid to mentor a younger guy like a Rondo/Magloire--who as stated helps with player development in Toronto and really respect the Nick Nurse coaching staff and work with guys who are talented but lacked some skill but have developed like Siakam, Anunoby, and Scottie Barnes has been a better NBA player than he looked at any point offensively at FSU. Not that it's all Magloire but that franchise wouldn't keep you around if you didn't contribute.

Quinn played at Notre Dame and has worked with Miami Heat under Pat Riley/Erik Spoelstra who I have great respect for as a HC and think he's best HC in the NBA.

Neptune isn't someone I'd hire now but a name to keep an eye on-worked for Wright at Nova and is young....and what he did in one year at Fordham was impressive and has my attention.

I like him too but don't think he's leaving Arizona. He's got a nice situation there and they gave him a chance to run his own program. Out West, less competition and pressure at Arizona then at a place like Kentucky but would love to be wrong here and see him as a potential replacement.

Pressure is the main thing I believe would keep a top notch coach from taking the UK job. I know they would be compensated very well but if the job leads you to an early grave then what’s the point. Also, top notch I guess falls under your opinion of what you consider top notch.

Well said. Just about any coach would exceed those expectations.

Battered wife syndrome much?

I’m sure no other coach in the country could win at UK, riiiiiight.
