Not gunna sugar coat the fact that Southern Alabama is not a good team. However the Defense, which had the most question marks going into the season stepped up big today when we needed them to. And if there is any part of this team that has the players for considerable improvement it's on offense. Maybe some of our players have been reading their press clippings a bit too much and needed alittle dose of reality. Scott Frost didn't suddenly forget how to coach offense. So time to get back to work. It's not time to panic yet.

They are well coached though. If you have watched football the last three days you would see that the power 5 teams have feasted on mistakes more so than physically dominating their opponents. S Alabama didn't have many big breakdowns in the secondary, and they did a great job keeping contain on AM. I think he expected the outside to be open and it just wasn't. Plus they must have known our offense pretty well because guys were not open outside of the first drive. That being said...we were on track for 450-500 yards of offense before that weird 3rd quarter.

Lot of work to be done, the offense was anemic to say the least. D and ST's had their good moments, but some very bad as well.

amart looked like a pocket passer who had not yet developed his field of vision. spielman was open most of the day and overlooked after the first quarter. there was no attack attack attack in the offense. poor play calling, coaching, execution. other than that defense had some letdowns but played like they will only get better.

2AM could have more yardage running instead of waiting for so long going through his progressions..

We won and that’s all that matters. Last years team, early in the year, would have lost that game. We do need to be better on offense if we’re going to win in Boulder.

Second floor center snaps did nothing for rhythm. Adrian looked out of sorts for sure. Wan’dale is going to be a headache for opposing Ds.

Martinez is far more talented than Tommy Armstrong, but they have something in common: both seem to struggle when standing in the pocket, even when they have a fair amount to time to throw.

At halftime Frost suggested that he was going to get Martinez more involved in the running game, but then NU didn't have the ball most of the 3rd quarter and that kind of went out the window. I expect NU will get him out of the pocket more in coming weeks - at least I hope so.

At least the team and the fans know their is work to do, I’d rather see a ugly win like this and the team get better during the season, compared to Callahan’s first game he had joe daily looking like the next joe Montana but after that it was down hill

We better use this "win" to buckle down for Colorado. These guys were believing the media hype and drinking their own kool aid. Go back to plain old water and hard work.

Oh man, it didn't even last the whole game. First half against Western Illinois in 2004: 4 TDs. Second half: 4 INTs.

What hype? We're ranked 24th. It's not like anybody was talking about a national title run.

Super slow also in getting the ball snapped. Did not look like a frost offense at all. My guess is they were just going through the motions for this game.

The broadcast even talked about all the hype right at the beginning.

Then you haven't been reading much college football news to know better.

Following back to back 4-8 seasons, they were ranked 24th this preseason based ENTIRELY on hype.

I noticed that as well. We only went up-tempo in one series. The more I think about this game, the more it seemed like a "get your feet wet" type of game as opposed to "dive in".

Color me unimpressed. This team needs a wake-up call.
The offense seemed like they were in slow-motion. No push, actually pushed backwards a lot. Jurgens was a big liability - both in hiking and blocking. Martinez was really sluggish, slow to make a decision on RPO, and locked on his receivers. He missed Mike Williams (wide open) a few times, and the TE's, and frankly looked very average on Sat. Thank goodness our defense was flying around on Sat., or we would have lost that game. Can you imagine the firestorm in Lincoln if that happened?

I'll just say this...South Alabama had some upper classmen big guys up front on defense that outweighed our interior OLine, and had 3-star players littered throughout their DLine. It's not like they were completely devoid of talent. One of their DTs squatted over 800 lbs in high school.

You take that, and the fact that our interior OLine is inexperienced and Jurgens hasn't been practicing much, and you saw the result. Our interior guys just need to get some experience.

I think I’d prefer our blessings less disguised.

We knew OL would be a ?, but against south alabama you’d hope it wouldn’t get so exposed.

I’m not super worried about Jurgens’ snapping issues. I think that should improve quickly. But the rest of the OL play may not be as easy.

Let’s hope they were just “off” but are capable of much more.

There’s a decent chance S alabama has the best d line we will see until Ohio state. I haven’t actually looked at Colorado (looked terrible vs CSU) or Illinois. Hopefully by Ohio State our o line makes a big leap. Definitely possible when you’re dealing with guys lacking experience. Not saying we will match up well with the Buckeyes but its too early to panic.

Offense looked like the game was just a big walk through to them. Played like a team that expects the other guys to just lie down and hand them yardage. The play calls didn't show respect for the opponent and neither did the line play.

Against a team like that you should be able to hurt them in a variety of ways. and NU didn't show that ability. They were crashing inside zone and the zone read super hard and NU showed very little off that to punish them for it. I haven't done a full re-watch but I saw triple option just once. If they're taking away two make them deal with three.

The outside zone was even working fairly well but they didn't do a lot of that until Maurice came in. I suspect playbook is an issue for Mills still and they can only call so much with him at RB. Possibly the case with Cam at C as well. His snaps were awful and I didn't see much in his blocking that made up for it.

You saw that huge seam route to Stoll, that was an RPO with pulling linemen that he kept and threw the seam and it burned them badly. The triple pitch to Wyatt was a nice gain, but 7 yards on 3rd and 10 doesn't do you any good.

Martinez was overthinking bigtime, he got away with at least two picks being dropped. Not getting the ball out on time at all, I dunno if he isn't comfortable with his WRs yet or what.

It's a young team, you're going to get stretches like this from them where it just looks sloppy and uninspired. Better this week than next, I guess. Montez and Shenault are going to find ways to score points.

I don't think there's much "hype" to be had when you're ranked 24th. Hype is all the teams that are going to make the playoff, which no one has really talked about for us.

glad a few have pointed their dline out. its the first thing i noticed about them, in addition to pre-game thought that their coach has some chops...

for sure room for improvement, but ill cut some slack based on above comnents.

I’m rewatching the game and the announcers made mention of the USA D-Line. Said they got some transfers in and the USA coaching staff expected them to be one of the best units in the team. They mentioned they have 9 guys they were going to rotate in and out. No only was their D-Line good they were able to keep them fresh.
