Anyone know what department this was in?

What does it matter?... what would you want next? Which floor they work on? Then.. maybe just tell me their office number?

Just assume it's in every department.

Again... if you're going to freak out even more knowing that your kid has come within 6 degrees of separation from the virus.. then just go ahead and freak out now.

Meh, I don't think it really matters anyway. School's been out for three weeks so nobody's been in contact with him on campus, or at least they shouldn't have.

Wait, you think we're actually doing contact tracing in this country? What does this place look like, South Korea?

Lets go with this.......Exactly how is asking what department someone is in qualify as a 'freak out'?

My niece is an instructor at MSU. No one has been told that she knows of. I’m assuming only the people that came in contact are the ones being notified.

the dept of health will try to track down people who were in contact and notify them. It's standard with all of this.

If you weren't notified, then you're good.

Sounds like it was Xenomorph**
Didn't mean to hit a nerve. There are some departments that are still significantly working on-site, and others that are not. Also, last I checked, rumors are encouraged on SPS. Whoever the individual is, I hope they are recovering.

It does matter to some of us. I have still been to work on campus everyday (essential and whatnot) and I would like to know. I was also upset when I found out on the morning news and not from the university. They send multiple COVID emails everyday, but not about this.

Just for the record, I'm not freaking out, but I would like more transparency from the higher ups. It's how you squash rumors (that are rampant btw), not fear monger and let the cycle rumor cycle ramp up.

I think that's maybe over simplified. If they're not putting out notices to see who has been in a particular building or area, they normally aren't going to identify everybody that has crossed the person's path. Maybe this person works in a place that is shutdown to the extent that there is nobody that enters the building, even to deliver mail, that is not a regular worker that they can easily identify. Not sure I'd trust them to make that assessment and even if they did, why not put the information out there to be sure?

HIPAA, basically if you don't NEED to know, you aren't going to hear anything offical from anyone about who it is. Those that DO hear about officially will also fall under HIPAA laws when it comes to talking about it.

It's HIPAA, not HIPPA. Sorry, pet peeve.

Let me tell you how restrictive HIPAA is. My adult son was injured fairly badly in an accident. Ambulance came and took him away. I had to stay with his child, who was in bed asleep at the time. When I called the local hospital, they told me he had not been brought there. The police, who were on the scene, told me he had been taken to UMMC. UMMC said they had no record of him. I called the ambulance service and they told me HIPAA would not allow them to tell me what hospital they had taken him to because he was an adult and I was not directly involved in his medical care. If you feel the need to ***** about something, ***** about the law, not the people required to abide by it.

The lack of creativity astounds me. One can answer the 17n question indirectly. "By law I cannot disclose that information, sir. Now, if you will excuse me, I need to get BACK to UMMC where I recently delivered a patient who was injured badly. Do you understand me, sir? I need to get back to UMMC."

Agreed. This is the new normal. I’m assuming everyone I come into contact with has been exposed.

Huge rumor but I heard it was someone from MSU extension services which is located in Bost

Bost is where extension is on campus, but I understood the person to have been at a satellite location.

Another was a student not on campus.

The other 3 awaiting results who are staff, have not been identified by department yet.

If I "assume its in every department" then I guess I shouldn't be going to work on campus everyday should I?

If someone had been in the fraternity house that the student moved out of that would tend to matter wouldn't it? Why should someone have to assume it was in all fraternity houses when a person w/ it had only been confirmed in one?

Or if I had been in Bost in close proximity to the Extension employee that tested positive, wouldn't that matter? Why should someone that works on the 4th floor have to worry if it was an employee in the basement lab that had only been there?

I work on campus and have every day since this started. If those people had not been in the building I work in then I wouldn't have to "freak out" as you say would I? I could be as cool as you. But I'll go ahead and take your suggestion and assume that its in every building now and not go to work.

Nursing home administrator here (run a CCRC with Independent, Assisted, and nursing residents)... with a sister community who has an active case.

They were required to report the case to Dept of Health, who immediately reached out with a representative and started narrowing down who all this person could've reasonably come in contact with. They retrieved the information and Dept of Health began making calls to tell those folks to self quarantine for 2 weeks.

Yes, it may be different depending on setting, but that's not an over simplification. I'm on conference calls 3 times a day and beyond burnt out on the information, but it's necessary.

Believe me, I was expecting something like that, but it didn't happen. I called the police again and they were able to find out for me. Only took me 6 hours to locate him.

Nobody is asking for who it is, just where they are located. That usually won't be the same thing. Might have to be more circumspect based on how shutdown the campus is, but unless there is a building where only one person is working, it seems like it'd be pretty easy to say "We're currently tracking down everybody who has entered the extension service located at whatever location; if you have been in that facility within the past 5 days, please reach out to us at 555-YOU-FUCT." It seems like in most cases that wouldn't be personally identifying information, but I'm not sure how unreasonable HIPAA is.

That's a terrible situation ... but the laws are in place because idiots take advantage of people trying to be reasonable. There are very few ways to identify the person on the phone is who they say they are.
