I know some countries do something like this, but I don't think you could implement this in the States and expect good results. Way to many lazy kids who have had zero expectations placed on them up to that point who would absolutely hate being there and would be as disruptive as possible to try amd get out.

Not many of today's college kids I'd want protecting me

Previously, I would have said nay.

But, it's 2020.

If the government says it's a good idea, then, by all means, YAY!

Same thing could be said about the late 60's early 70's when we had a lottery. Most of the kids that went had no interest in college as they could get a deferment. I'll not lie. I got my college degree, but also had my preinduction physical. I just never got the call

Every college-aged kid does a 2-year stint.

Yay or Nay?
I could see a choice between 6 months active duty and 2 years National Guard service. Could it be that time spent in the military might change the lives of low income kids? I think so. 2 years compulsory IMO in non-war times is too much.

I work with a vet who was in the Navy who is now 33 years old. They worked him so hard in 5 years that he tore both rotator cuffs, destroyed his middle finger distal phalanx tendons and got numerous concussions. He said the doctors told him to take ibuprofen and rest. Looks like they skimp like they do with ones at the VA.

College athletes living the dream by comparison

You know it’s funny. This would have been somewhat popular opinion years ago- with a fore sure agreement that 2 years gets you a large benefit toward college/school. Now, the expectation is forgive my student loan while I do nothing in return. This country has certainly changed attitudes in regard to expected hand outs if we’ve advanced in anything!

Military, no way. Public service? I think an argument could be made for that one. We really don't face an existential threat that would necessitate compulsory military service like Israel does, but there could be ways to teach work ethic. Ultimately it would be a failed program unless there was a level of reward that encouraged kids to sign up and perform but even if it was an ideal program it would fail as well.

Yay. Having been appointed to West Point, then flunked the physical, only to be drafted and passed the same hurdle during Vietnam and served there in '68-69, I come at this differently than youngsters.

First, nothing puts a damper on warmongering than a citizen army. Politicians are loathed to spill blood of their benefactor sons and daughters.

Second, military service provides an important and meaningful bridge between college and career. It's when I matured, met and worked with a diversity of people never dreamed of otherwise, and made me so appreciate civilian life.

And finally, serving in the military gave me a new perspective on life, government, and the purpose of war. Biden, Trump, BHO, Clinton, none of them served. And that wasn't to our advantage as citizens.

Want free college? Serve in the military. Want citizenship? Serve in the military. This is the exact thing that could nudge kids away from socialism and towards responsibly citizenship.

Just think of Sparta. Worked for them, but doesn't have to be so rigid, long term, or combat related.

Depends on what the service is. If we're talking about drafting everyone 18-20 into combat potentially, I'm against that. That's just a draft.

If we broaden the definition of national service to have it include domestic infrastructure, development, etc. then I think it's a great idea. There is a lot of work all over the country that could use a big labor force to throw at it. Roads, bridges, dams, levies.

Tear down derelict houses, clean up litter, upgrade energy efficiency in a variety of existing structures.

No, let the other poor bastards die for their country.
Not what I said at all. There is already a sufficient number of volunteer soldiers and the draft already exists. Those who want to be in the military can be.

I never chose to sign up but I would have packed up and shipped out and given it hell had I ever been drafted. I was born in 82 and there was never a draft. I have family that served as well. So I'll give you two guesses of where you can stick your eye roll like I'm pumping draft dodging chicken hawk sentiment over here. There's a world of difference between choosing not to seek out the fight and being scared of it.

There's no logical reason why you would take hundreds of thousands of kids into compulsory combat roles. We're already the largest and most powerful military in the world, and the most expensive.

I would imagine that plenty of drill instructors would tell you the LAST thing they want is to suddenly be saddled with EVERY 18 year old in the country. The military ain't for everyone nor should we want it to be.

Requiring mandatory military service of all high school graduates would effectively quadruple the size of our military. What would be the point of that, other than to flush even more tax dollars down the drain?

Coming from someone currently in the military I'd say hell no... the services do some good but when you start mandating a 2 year stint there starts to become too much turnover and I would assure you the training will take a large dip... leadership will not want to invest time with soldiers that are only going to be there for 2 years, heck most of your first year is purely training anyways... the military is not for everyone...
